I missed the first half but caught a familiar name in the credits - Tim van Eyken. From: Bonnie Shaljean I video'd it but haven't watched it yet - caught his name in the credits while I was cueing the tape back. Looking forward to hearing him. I'm very glad to see this new series. The plug got pulled on the show last time fairly abruptly, I seem to recall reading. The producer and cast were pretty shocked, and there was still plenty of War left to run (I think they'd only got up to about 1942 though I don't remember enough specific historical events or details to use as a timeline). At that time there were reportedly no plans for a renewal, so this has been a very welcome surprise. I noticed Michael Kitchen's name on a producer's credit, buried in amongst the Best Boys and Key Grips etc. Wonder if that has something to do with the revival? |

From: Q (Frank Staplin) Foyle's War is available in six sets of DVDs, or sets 1-5 offered together, and separate set 6 (preorder June 1). Sets 1-5 has 31.7 hours of material, set 6 has 5 hours. Amazon has the lowest prices I have seen; some used or discount sites may be cheaper. Michael Kitchen is a favorite of mine. An excellent series, even the Wall Street Journal praised it. A product of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Honeysuckle Weeks is an Oxford graduate and studied art in Italy. |

As I recall, the series (Sing. or Plural?), as broadcast here, ended on VE Day. And I hadn't seen a situation in the screenplay where a German soldier might be so bold as to play an accordion in a pub. I dare say we'll get to see the third series. I've liked what I've seen of Michael Kitchen's work; in Foyle's War he does the "understated Pom" rather well. And Honeysuckle Weeks can act and/or study art anywhere, especially in my vicinity, for as long as she likes. Cheers, Rowan |

Last week's episode was such a story and showed how it was all but impossible for them to stay together. He grew up in an orphanage, but late in life found his mum in England and his family in Alabama. His dad was dead by then but he was welcomed as one of the family and has been back several times. |

I do not know Tim van Eyken but there was a guy singing Mussi Dem which later became known as Wooden Heart from the Elvis film. I am not an exponent of the accordian but that was what was being played as Tim sang. The clip last seconds only. I understand that there is going to be a further series but there is no news whther Michael Kitchen will be continuing. And Foyles War without Foyle???? From: Dave the Gnome "Wooden Heart", created by Fred Wise, Ben Weisman, Kay Twomey and German bandleader Bert Kaempfert, was based on a German folk song, "Muß i' denn zum Städtele hinaus". "Wooden Heart" features several lines from the original folk song, written in the German dialect Swabian. Bobby Vinton recorded his version in 1975 with those lines translated into Polish. The Elvis Presley version featured two parts in German, the first one is the first four lines of "Muß i' denn zum Städtele hinaus", whereas the second part appears towards the end and is based on a translation of the English version (therefore not appearing in the original German folk lyrics). This part being "Sei mir gut, Sei mir gut, Sei mir wie du wirklich sollst, Wie du wirklich sollst...." This literally means "Be good to me, Be good to me, Be to me how you really should, How you really should...." Isn't Wiki wonderful:-) Tim - If your listening - Do a cover of it NOW! :D |
