ADD: Lanterns gleam - camp song?

I'm trying to remember the lyrics to a song I learned at camp 45 years ago. Some of the lyrics:

Lanterns gleam, their bright flames leap and play....
As wild and vibrant music pours out...
High above the snow-capped mountainside the moonlight beams in glorious streams...
And the dancers weary open casements wide to view the night in beauty serene.

It was a beautiful song and fun to sing. I can find anything close to it. Can anybody help with all the lyrics and maybe guitar chords?

Lanterns gleam, their bright flames leap and play.
As wild and vibrant music pours out
The rafters ring as throng the dancers gay
With movement swift they circle about.
(sung as a round...so tempo and words vary slightly as second harmony part joins in)

Hi, Martha -
This page and this page seem to indicate the song may be called "Village Dance" - one of these pages describes it as a Hungarian song.

The song excerpt quoted is almost the same as what you posted:
The lanterns gleam, the yellow flames leap and play, from vibrant strings wild music pours out

Apparently, it's in the Jubilee Songbook, published by the Girl Guides of Canada.

Ah, but this page (click) has more:

LANTERNS GLEAM (Village Dance)

Lanterns gleam, the bright flames leap and play
As wild and vibrant music pours out
And the rafters ring and throng the dancers gay
With movements swift they circle about
High above the snow-capped countryside
The moonlight shines with radiant beam
And the dancers, weary, open casements wide
To view the night in beauty serene.

From Folk and Art Songs, Laurel Music Series, Teachers' Edition, Book II, M.Teresa Armitage, Boston, C.C.Birchard and Company, 1925.

Verse l upper part
The lanterns gleam, the yellow flames leap and play,
From vibrant strings wild music pours out,
The rafters ring as forward come dancers gay,
In motion swift they circle about.
Round and round in dizzy whirling,
Forward, back, your partner twirling.
Away with care! the merry heart lighter springs,
While over all the cymbalom rings.

Verse 1, counter part
Lanterns gleam, the bright flames leap and play,
Wild and vibrant music pours out,
And the rafters ring as throng the dancers gay,
Moving swift they circle about.
To the fiddle's gay rolicking, Lightly whirl,
To the magic tune frolicking Madly twirl
Then away with care! the merry heart lighter springs,
While over all the cymbalom rings.

Verse 2, upper part
Upon the field of winter's white country-side,
The moonlight falls in radiant sheen;
The dancers tire, so open fling casement wide,
Let in the night in beauty serene.
Then once more in festive measure,
Light of foot we take our pleasure.
Away with care! the glad hearts lighter bound,
All is fair, joy echoes around.

Verse 2, counter part
Here upon December's country-side
Luna's rays are casting a sheen;
And the dancers, weary fling carement wide,
View the night in beauty serene.
As the cymbalon tinkles clear, O'er and o'er
Village roundels from far and near sound once more.
Then away with care! the glad hearts lighter bound,
All is fair, joy echoes around.

If you wish I can fax or snail mail the score.

Hi Martha,
How interesting all of this is!
I have never been able to forget this song, which I heard being sung a few times by a class other than mine while I was in Primary School. This would have been either in the late 50s or the early 60s, here in Belize, at that time a British colony known as British Honduras.
It would be good to know in what part of the world you heard this lovely song 45 years ago.
Best wishes.

In 1944, as Grade IV pupils, we sang this as a round, with two verses and two tunes alternating. The words of each verse are similar but not identical; but the two tunes differ very considerably. Sung as a round, the musical effect is remarkably melodious.

Lanterns gleam, the bright flames leap and play,
Wild and vibrant music pours out,
And the rafters ring, as throng the dancers gay,
Moving swift, they circle about.

The lanterns gleam; the yellow flames leap and play.
From vibrant strings, wild music pours out.
The rafters ring, as forward come dancers gay;
In motion swift they circle about.
