What's Happened to Dirty Linen Magazine?

Does anyone know what has happened to Dirty Linen magazine? I haven't gotten an issue for months. The web site is also down. Has it gone out of business? It's been a great publication. I've been reading it for about 15 years. That and Sing Out help guide my selection of purchasing new music.

I think I read somewhere that they were not going to publish a magazine for a few months but will resume in May or June?
I don't know if it was a financial situation as to why they have not published a current issue. That's usually the reason but I don't know for sure.

This thread just caught my eye. I stopped subscribing to DL some time in the last year. (Not lack of interest or money, just lack of time to read it.) I hadn't realized anything had happend with the magazine.

I googled a bit, and found this information, which seems current:

Dirty Linen Newsfeed

This is most of what's posted there, and the last date shows 4/25/10:

May/June issue: The May/June 2010 issue has been canceled. Information will be posted on our website when news about a resumption in publishing Dirty Linen is known.
A new customer service phone number in California has been set up. All subscription and back issue orders, address changes, and questions about your subscription or other order should be directed here. 1-866-702-7778. Press "2" for Dirty Linen, then "1" for Customer Service. The office is open from 9am to 5pm Pacific Time. (Noon to 8pm Eastern Time.)

Founders Paul and Susan Hartman of DL recently (within the last week or so) posted an email to several newsgroups saying that they were no longer associated with DL publisher Visionation, and thanking the readers of DL for their long association with and support of the magazine. Not the exact wording, but something close to it - clearly indicating that the mag as we knew it is over. Unfortunately I didn't save the email or I would post it here.

Here is Susan's message:
-----
Please note that Paul and Susan Hartman have left the employ of
Visionation, the publisher of Dirty Linen.

We've had a great run in our two decades-plus of Dirty Linen, and
have made many good friends. We'll stay connected to Folk Alliance
through Paul's radio show at WTMD (Towson).

I paid for a two-year subscription in November and never received an issue. After numerous phone calls and e-mails I was promised more than six weeks ago that I would be receiving a $45.00 refund. I have received no such refund -- and my latest phone calls and e-mails have gone unanswered...

I had thought about subscribing but always bought it at an independent book/magazine shop. Matter fact, the owner of the shop would always call me when a new issue of Dirty Linen arrived.

So I am glad I didn't wind up subscribing after reading about some of the posts here that people have not received any refunds for subscriptions they had paid for.

Many years ago I had a subscription to Sing Out magazine which is only published four times a year.
It's a great magazine for folk music but I had problems in receiving the magazine. It was always very late in arriving (I had not moved and still had the same address) when I subscribed. I would see the magazine in the stores about 3-4 weeks before I even received the issue. However, other magazines (not music related), but well known ones like Consumer Reports, Readers Digest & a few other well known magazines always get their magazines out in a very timely manner & no problems.

I just hope that Dirty Linen resumes though as it was such a great magazine for folk music. I have been buying at the store for years.

Regarding the merger: Dirty Linen had merged with the publisher of Blues review. Whatever is going on is specific to Dirty Linen, I think. I'm pretty sure that Blues Review has continued to publish normally.

I should have mentioned that I had a subscription to Dirty Linen which expired with the last issue published. That was the Jan/Feb 2010 issue, with the cover story on Red Molly. I was lucky enough to get all of my issues; I'm sorry to hear that others were not.

here is an excerpt from a message from a contribtor to folk wax and blues wax, visionation's e-zines:

Visionation merged with Dirty Linen in 2007, already publishing Blues Revue and both our e-zines, Blueswax and Folkwax, which I have contributed to for ... 8 years. Things were going very well with new projects and the same editorial folks and Visionation has growing in radio and cable markets along with music festival collaboration. There was always the question of the hard copy Dirty Linen and.. e-zine Folkwax sort of competing with one another, etc. The core editorial folks recently decided, last month, to call it quits and I haven't heard of what, if any continuation to the publication there will be. I will check with folks and get the scoop. I'm not sure if Visionation is re-organizing it or will be trying to pull it into Folkwax.

I also paid for a two year subscription to D.L. in november. Haven't received an issue since then. Wonder if "they'll" get it together and publish again. I sure do miss getting the magazine! Makes me skittish about subscribing to Sing Out, which seriously has had problems as well. My copies would show up quite late, if at all and I had not so pleasant encounters with staff when trying to resolve problems. Sad state of affairs.

It certainly seems to be tough times for print magazines in the USA. Dirty Linen, The Beat, Rhythm Music and No Depression all gone of ones I would read from time to time, and Sing Out appealing to readers for help. Here in the UK there have been the widely reported delays and difficulties at Scotland's Living Tradition. However, to counter all that, English Dance & Song seems to be in renewed health under Derek Schofield's guidance and fRoots has the proud boast of publishing every single issue on time for 30+ years and looks as healthy as ever. I wonder why these two quite different mags seem to get it right and apparently maintain healthy, loyal readerships when others can't seem to manage it?

Why would you name a product 'Dirty Linen'?

When this magazine was first bruited, the folk organization I belonged to received a trial issue. We were asked to vote on the new name, and we were all against 'Dirty Linen.'

Who wants to think about smelly, damp underwear and sheets?

As promoters trying to get people to try out fine traditional music, we were fighting the bias against folkies as dirty, sloppy people. We wanted nothing to do with dirty linen.

Why would you name a product "Dirty Linen"?

Because it's the title of an instrumental piece by a beat combo called Fairport Convention. I believe Paul and Sue were quite impressed by them and their potential for blowing away some folkie cobwebs.

Just shows how naive they were eh!

Dirty Linen began as a Fairport Convention fanzine. In the late 1980s a new publisher took over and gave it a wider scope, but kept the name.

I just called 866-702-7778 and was told that they would resume printing with the Sept/Oct issue. The 2 missing issues would be added onto the end of everyone's subscription.

I wish I could believe whoever told the above guest that printing would resume in September/October. I was told that about the April/May issue, etc. -- and when that didn't happen PROMISED that my refund was in the mail several weeks ago. If anyone associated with the magazine is reading this have the integrity to respond.

I had a subscription last year, went to renew this year, called three times when I received nothing, finally was told they had moved to California, and would be up and running again this year. And never said a thing about refunding my money. Why does this always happen when something good sells out? The little guy like us is left holding the bag.All these fools care about is the almighty dollar

I am a longtime (over twenty years!) writer for Dirty Linen, and I have only been contacted by the former editors, not the new crowd. I got a similar, somewhat more detailed email from the Hartmans, but I am not sure to what extent anything in it is sensitive, so I won't paste it in here. Suffice it to say I know few if any details about what might happen in the future.

One thing I definitely believe for now: the new owners/publishers, if they do begin to publish the magazine again, will probably be using a whole different set of writers and a whole new approach...I wouldn't expect it to be the same. I would go online and look at their ezine folkwax to get a sense of what it might be like.

I too was a longtime writer for Dirty Linen, and like Mr. Nerd, I have not been contacted by the Visionation folks, only by the former editors. I'll be surprised if another issue ever appears since at the moment there's no editorial staff and even the web site has abruptly disappeared, but who knows. The magazine had been in financial trouble for some time, largely due to a big dropoff in advertising, so this didn't come as a shock. But it's very, very sad.

Recently, I went to the DL webaddress and found it gone. However, before that, there was a notice posted about the suspension of what would be the current issue and a resumption in May or June. It said all subscriptions would be honored and adjusted. I had also called a toll-free number to check the mailing address for submissions. I got a very courteous call from Visination in California reiterating that everything was fine and would resume shortly. So, I'm waiting to hear. It would be a sad thing if Dirty Linen were to cease - it is a great source of filtering for music.

I had never heard of Visination before the merger, but hearing that they also produce the e-zine Folkwax saddens me. We've been sumitting to them for several years without response. I called and emailed a few times for information, but never got so much as a courtesy call. So, still I wait - but now nervously. My label has decided to suspend submissions to Folkwax and I've talked to several others who feel the same way. Dirty Linen may have, at times, been overwhelmed with review submissions, but they usually got something noted - especially for established artists. Of Folkwax, I know little and from my experience - it isn't too good.

I hope Visination doesn't try to replace Dirty Linen with Folkwax. It would be like passing off a Sheraton band for the Beatles. So...I'm waiting nervously.

glad to read the posts here but sad to hear about the Dirty Linen problems...I too have a subscription...expensive, yes but I looked at it as my treat to myself! live only on Social Security but as I said I made this my one magazine subscription I didn't want to cancel. sure I'd like a refund of monies left but I really would like the magazine to return...but that doesn't sound like it's going to happen. Subscribers should have been notified but guess that won't happen either. what a shame..looked forward to reading the magazine from cover to cover...finding names of folks that I hadn't heard about in years...will save this page and the addresses/phone numbers..thanks to the folks who have posted this info...peace and blessings to Dirty Linen readers from an old folkie!

I know that Dirty Linen magazine ceased publication earlier this year and I read various posts at that time as to the reason, etc.
I know there was mention of it possibly starting up again in June 2010 (which didn't happen of course) and I think there was a later date also mentioned being around Oct. 2010. However, that did not happen either. Just wondering if anyone has any update or if Paul Hartman still plans to bring the magazine back at some future date and perhaps with a different publishing company?

Many of us miss that magazine very much!

It's been many years now since folk music magazine, "Dirty Linen" ceased publication, (in 2010) and was run by Paul Hartman. It was a great magazine that was published monthly out of Maryland. I seem to recall that it was supposed to start up publication again and a new management publishing company was going to take over (not with Paul Hartman anymore.)

However, this never happened and I was wondering if anyone knows why it never came to be? I'm not sure who the new management company was right now, but just curious if anyone knows anything about it?
I think it was a publishing company in California. I don't know what happened and why the other publishing company never wound up bringing the magazine back?

I still miss this wonderful folk music magazine!
