The song is called "Feather Ben" and was written by Peter Bowen. Rosalie Sorrels recorded it first on her Traveling Lady Rides Again album, circa 1978, and Utah Phillips learned it from her.

Utah Phillips recorded "Feather Ben" on a Philo LP titled All Used Up: A Scrapbook (1979). As far as I can tell, that album has not been issued on CD. The Rosalie Sorrels album Travelling Lady Rides Again has been reissued on CD and is available for purchase as various locations, but it has been discontinued by the manufacturer.

Can anybody post the lyrics to "Feather Ben"?

FEATHER BEN
(Peter Bowen)
Utah Phillips: All Used Up: A Scrapbook

It sure tasted good
Yeah, that's what I said
I'll have another
As long as you're buying

I'd like to live on
Whiskey and chocolate ice cream
I'd move some place
Where it's warm in December
Pretend there's more time than I've got

Chocolate ice cream
And good bourbon whiskey
Sometimes old ladies
Make me take baths

Sreak twice a week
And chicken on Sunday
I worked all my life
Is that too much to ask

Can you play any Hank Williams
Or old cowboy songs
D'ya know anything
Worth listening to

Hey, I'm just an old drunk
Don't pay me no mind
You've been much too good
For me to talk that way to

But it sure tasted good
Yeah that's what I said
And I'll have another
As long as you're buying

I'd like to live on
Whiskey and chocolate ice cream
I'd move some place
Where it's warm in December
Pretend there's more time than I've got

I fought in three wars
And I raised me three children
Never learned much more
Than the size of my shirt

Wars didn't help
The kids ain't worth shit
No use complainin'
It could've been worse

And you kids with your lovers
Whose last name you don't know
At least I could always
Match the name with the ass

I had my lovers
When my age was golden
And you can have yours
It ain't even good grass

But it sure tasted good
Yeah, that's what I said
I'll have another
As long as you're buying

I'd like to live on
Whiskey and chocolate ice cream
I'd move some place
Where it's warm in December
Pretend there's more time than I've got

Well it's long past my bedtime
I'll toddle along
You kids be good
If it matters to you

You're lookin' ahead
To those beers and them women
I'm lookin' back
It's much better from here

But it sure tasted good
Yeah, that's what I said
I'll have another
As long as you're buying

I'd like to live on
Whiskey and chocolate ice cream
I'd move some place
Where it's warm in December
Pretend there's more time than I've got
I pretend there's more time than I've got

Oops. The cookie monster struck...reset now. I posted the Feather Ben lyrics for you last night.

Typo: Sreak twice a week should be Steak twice a week.

Enjoy.

If there's a place I can hear it I'll give it a try for you.

I like that song. But after hearing it, I first heard the Austin Lounge Lizards' "Old Blevins," and found it a great deal more true to life.

Well, I am unsure whether true to life is the exact criterion I'd apply when picking a song to learn. I suppose it's as good as any, but I am still considering whether or not "not true to life" is a reasonable criterion for not learning a song. Actually, all I wanted was the chords - - mainly because I'm too lazy to work 'em out myself. If nobody's got them, I guess I'll figure them out and post them. (Guest 999, it's on Return of the Travelin' Lady by Rosalie Sorrels, and All Used Up by Utah Phillips.) While its veracity may be in question, I still find it's worth singing. I guess what's good enough for Sorrels and Phillips is pretty much good enough for the likes of me.

By Peter Bowen? You mean the same guy that wrote the Gabriel DuPre books? Holy S***! I never made the association!
