1. Why did you put this in B.S?
2. Somebody bring me another handkerchief.

Because it isn't a discussion appropriate for being placed above the line.... more of a human interest story.

Wow. What a story. I bet he's lived longer partly just because he stopped taking all the damn medications....but the ultimate key has to be his joy in doing musical service to his community.

GNU, IT is about the love of music and is very inspiring. I feel like a real wuss after one heart surgery. I can't imagine going through ten and still being able to go like that! What an incredible man.

I moved it up top. If you really, really don't want it up there, I'll put it back, but I think it deserves to be recognized up thar, too.:-)

Cool with me kat. A clone's gotta do what a clone's gotta do. Far as I am concerned, the more exposure for this man, the better.

Still ain't a music thread, tho... in your own words. But, I go with the flow when I can.

He really is a "hero", isn't he?

Well, maybe I will move it down below...thought more music-inclined folks would notice. I've been telling everyone about this guy!

Please leave this thread where it belongs - in the music section.

Discussions about musicians are discussions about music.

On the lighter side: Did anyone notice that the idea of putting a harmonica thread below the line came from a catter who plays bodhran?

Plays bodhran? Good grief! I've been sitting around here for years harboring the assumption that he was a decent human being.

Showed the clip to my wife last night; she was "gobsmacked" by it too.

Absolutely this thread belongs "above the line." I for one never would have seen it otherwise.

But I think it's a good idea for a thread to contain a few facts:

The video came from a report by Steve Hartman in an "Assignment America" segment on CBS News, May 1, 2009.

The story is about 71-year-old Andy Mackie, a Scottish-born retired horse trainer of Chimacum, Washington (near Port Townsend, on the Olympic Peninsula). Starting with funds that he saved by discontinuing his medications, he bought cheap harmonicas and started teaching kids to play them. He also makes and teaches something he calls a "strum stick" (which is shaped sorta like a Backpacker guitar but has only 3 strings, like a mountain dulcimer, and is probably a lot cheaper than a Martin).

Here's the same video (but with commercials) on YouTube (just in case the original link goes dead).

Here's the web site of The Andy Mackie Music Foundation.

Now, anyone who comes looking for this thread might have a chance of finding it with a search engine.
