The weekend is a relaxed easy going event... It is a session weekend with the onus being on people to do there own thing... not be organised... enjoy it... We have put some very good concerts on and loads of food... We want a party atmosphere in Whitby...

The centre is at the rugby club where there will be concerts in the evening... camping... and eating and drinking... Sessions are in the Station, The Endeavour and The First In Last Out... but you can start your session anywhere you like... we dont care...!!

Its a small event but with the finest acts performing... Duncan McFarlane Band on Sat evening and Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy and Chris Parkinson on Sunday...

Its the 1st one so anything could happen...

It was, Raggy - early 80's probably. It was a friend of ours who was a Morris dancer and not realy into the singarounds or sessions that discovered the strange phenomenon! We were, more often than not, found in the Elsinore or the Plough beer garden. I believe the latter has fell to Numpty Smiths music axe :-(

Looks like I will be there. Just the baby sitting question now...

The weather was crap, facilities for camping at the Rugby Club were crap, certainly for men, only communal showers and no hand washing facilities at all in the toilets.

Sessions in the town were almost non existant, Saturday afternoon was good but couldn't find one at all on Saturday night so we came home a day early, won't go again.

The session at the First In Last Out on Saturday night was great, it was listed in the programme, I was also told there was a good session at the Endeavour, also listed in the programme and another at the Fleece, spontaneous and not listed

I didn't know about the First in Last Out but at 9pm on Saturday night there wasn't one session going on anywhere including the Endeavour, Fleece, Black Horse, Middle Earth and Station, they may well have happened later but we were fed up of walking round by then.

No actually I tell a lie, in The Fleece were a few musicians, a guitarist singer was playing Knights In White Satin, then a violinist [ note not a fiddler ] played Viva Espana, and that's when we left.

I got there (Whitby Rugby Club) on Friday night and a nice little session (music) was underway at 10pm

Suffering from hayfever meds etc I stayed around the club house and had the most magnificent breakfast and tea provided for fest goers from M & C!

Roy Clinging was brill and Flossie unbelievable!

Tina improves every time I see her and gets more confident and mature

I hadn't seen Duncan McFarland band before, but everyone was waving their hands and getting involved in this folk rock band!

Their is a minor issue regarding the mens showers ~ one chap actually managed to turn 'em on had a shower and then turned 'em off!!

Its all work but maybe a bowl or too full of water for a wash in the shower area as was done years ago at Towersey I think, could sort this out!

Mens showers steward needed maybe!

No sing in the showers, but the womens shower block seemed to be full of women at 2am on Sunday!!

The cough etc got to me and I came home on Sunday am, home before 10am

Doctors asap!

Missed Watersons etc, o dear!!

When we arrived in the Endeavour on Saturday Afternoon there wasn't a great deal happening...so we started our own singaround/session.
When paul and I left to eat it was still going strong ,as it was when we returned after tea. I offered the landlords to do a singaround/sesssion on Sunday and I did so. With help from Steve,Les ,Maggie,Jean,Paul and others we had a great session from 1 till 5.   I can't comment on 9 oclock on Saturday because by then I was in FILO and I can't comment on the campsite because I didn't stay there, but I had a great weekend.I have to agree with Les about the do-it-yourself style of the weekend. This "Spring Session" was never meant to be on the same scale as the original Moor and Coast festival, any more than that festival was trying to emulate the size and scope of Whitby Folk Week , so there was bound to be less "organised" sessions in the town. In these cases people start sessions/singarounds for their own pleasure. If you couldn't find a session Dave ,why didn't you atsrt your own?

I'm told that the showers are up for improvement so they might be better next year! The women's ones were ok if a little too hot, I've been in worse though.
I've been at worse music events too, I'm told that there were some good sessions in town and some less good ones but this is a smaller event than the M&C fest so there's bound to be less people and it seems that some people managed to make the best of it and have a good time anyway.

Shame about the weather, I thought it only ever got that windy in Fleetwood! All hatches needed to be battoned, as it were.

Hope to see it back with the necessary improvements next year (Running out of meat for Sunday Roast was a bit of a schoolboy error chaps!)

Just to say thanks to Glen, Chris and Nigel - we enjoyed the weekend and look forward to the next one. Flossie was great, Roy Clinging's presentation about 19th century songs was excellent and the audience was very attentive; the young and bubbly Tina Taylor ably got the concerts off to a good start on the Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening. Roger Sutcliffe followed by Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy and Chris Parkinson were the icing on the already excellent cake. The seafood buffet on Saturday afternoon would have done justice at a posh wedding reception and the Sunday roast buffet was well yummy. The staff at the Rugby Club were extremely helpful, cheerful and friendly. The camping facilities are what they are - it is a temporary campsite after all and the gale that buffeted the tents was provided by higher management. Perhaps the answer is to buy a ticket and enjoy what is offered on the programme?

Finished all the packing away and getting feed back from the pubs involved... A couple of points I would like to mention... The sessions where fairly well attended... We didnt put MC's into some of the sessions but we will do next year we hope... We only had a couple of dance teams this year and that always has an impact on the atmosphere in the pubs, especially in the evening when their members are socialising... We will invite more next year...!!

The facilities at the Rugby Club (Showers n Loos) were basic but functional. We did put a note in the programme sheet asking people to be patient with us on this... as that part of the club is to be completly refurbished very soon... the bath seemed to work well for some tho...!! The rest of the club was great...!!

The food side was a success even if more people turned up than expected...

Campsite was good... even if the weather turned nasty on the Sunday...

To finish.. I would like to thank all who made the weekend work... it is a new idea and we can only make it better for next year...

Thanks..

Moor & Coast Team...

Well I enjoyed it.

And I can confirm it was definitely a fiddler playing Viva Espana in the Fleece. Maybe Dave doesn't understand the English fiddle tradition of individuality and fiddling about with the tunes.

Good to see the bloke doing Elvis get a welcome in the Endeavour too, alongside plenty of proper folky stuff and trad fiddle.

Next year I'll pack my loofah.

Didn't manage to make it for the festival, due to another commitment.
But what's this moaning about not being able to find a session. One of the many things I love about Whitby is the way a session gets started in pubs like the Black Horse, Endeavour, Middle Earth or several other pubs at drop of a hat and not just when there are festivals on. I go there at various times of the year and never have problems having a pint and a song or three if I choose to, in fact I find it's encouraged by the landlords & ladies. Aye it might be not to everyone's taste, but there's nowt to stop them from joining in, with their own styles, whether it be trad. Folk, modern pop or your own stuff, so come on yer moaners (or music snobs),stop moaning and let yer hair down, you might be suprised and enjoy it.

PS Keep up the good work Glen & Co.

I like the idea of a session which puts on excellent food to encourage you to be there for the START of the evening concert! Plus catching up with Roger and Duncan was a treat. Watch out for Mandy - she's really going places.

Sorry Rosy - you can't have your duck back. It was seen leaving the site 'under protective custody' (not mine) to keep a small folkie happy.
