Songs about friendship

Have been asked to sing a song at a funeral which speaks of gratitude for friendship. Any ideas for a good one? If not, I'm hoping for a visit from the muse...

Hi, KT-
Well, I always link It's a Pleasure to Know You.
And when my best friend died and left me to care for his wife, I sang Thanksgiving Eve at his memorial service....and married his widow a year later.
And it's not about friendship, but I've wanted to sing The Good in Living at a funeral.

From: Commander Crabbe

How about this one

Beyond The Distant Hills
(Lawrence Dean)

The wheel of fate rolls ever on
It takes us where it will
Some must stay and some must go
Beyond the distant hills
You always were a friend to me
We've been through thick and thin
These parting words I'm bound to say
But where do I begin

Chorus

For I don't know the road you'll travel
Nor what lies in wait for you
But my heart is with you always
Now adieu, dear friend, adieu.

As I recall in days gone by
Of friendship and of cheer
I can't forsee much joy for me
Now you're no longer here
And far across the ocean wide
Wherever you may be
As oft as I shall think of you
I hope you'll think of me

And so I come to wish you well
Forever from this day
May fortune shine its light on you
And guide you on your way

For I don't know the road you'll travel
Nor what lies in wait for you
But my heart is with you always
Now adieu, dear friend, adieu.

Guy Clark - Old Friends

Old Friends
(Guy Clark/Susanna Clark/Richard Dobson)

It's like when you're making conversation
And you're trying not to scream
And you're trying not to tell 'em
You don't care what they mean
And you're really feeling fragile
And you really can't get home
And you really feel abandoned
But you want to be alone

----Old Friends they shine like diamonds
----Old Friends you can always call
----Old Friends Lord you can't buy 'em
----You know it's Old Friends after all

And when the house is empty
And the lights begin to fade
And there's nothing to protect you
Except the window shade
And it's hard to put your finger
On the thing that scares you most
And you can't tell the difference
Between an angel and a ghost

----Old Friends they shine like diamonds
----Old Friends you can always call
----Old Friends Lord you can't buy 'em
----You know it's Old Friends after all

I second mg's nomination of All the Good People.

Gene Raskin's "Time, Gentlemen, Time" contains

Here's to our friends, our steady old friends,
The ones that are tried and true.
They are the best,
And to hell with the rest.
There is only one test that'll do:
And that's

    Time, gentlemen, time,
    Time, gentlemen, time.
    Raise your glass
    To the pleasures that pass.
    Time, gentlemen, time.

Thanks everyone, for these suggestions. They are all great, and more fitting than what I've been asked to sing. I'll see about learning some of them to run by the family.

Thanks, Joe, for reopening. I actually didn't know it had been closed and do appreciate everyone's good suggestions. Keep 'em coming if you have more.

There is a beautiful song by Nanci Griffith, called, "There's a light beyond these woods." It is about friendship. If you go on Youtube there is a concert video of Nanci singing this song. Before she starts to sing the song she talks about going out to find yourself a friend. The posting I listened to was posted by someone named benbruch. It is truely a lovely song about friendship.
I hope you like it too.

HAPPY WE ARE A' THEGITHER

Here around the ingle bleezin',
Wha see happy and sae free?
Tho' the northern wind blaws freezin',
Freenship warms baith you and me.

CHORUS:
Happy we are a' thegither,
Happy we'll be, ane an' a';
Time shall see us a' the blyther
Ere we rise to gang awa'.

See the miser o'er his treasure
Gloatin' wi' a greedy ee!
Can he feel the glow o pleasure
That around us here we see?

Thus then let us a' be tassin'
Aff our stoups o gen'rous flame;
And while roun' the board 'tis passin',
Raise a sang in frien'ship's name.

Freenship maks us a' mair happy'
Freenship gies us a' delight;
Freenship consecrates the drappie,
Freenship brings us here the night.

That's more or less as it was sung by Willie Scott - I got the text off the web and fixed a couple of typos.

From: Paul Reade

One of the most requested songs from singer / songwriter Kath Reade (see http://www.kathreade.co.uk/ / http://www.myspace.com/kathreade ) is "Friendship". There's an mp3 of Kath singing it at http://www.gradelydesigns.co.uk/friendship.mp3.

FRIENDSHIP
(Kath Reade)

CHORUS:-
Friendship matters the most
Friendship matters the most
It's your holy spirit
It's your holy ghost
Friendship matters the most

When you come to mark up your life
And you re-evaluate all the strife
You forget all the nonsense
Of who's first past the post
Friendship matters the most

I try to be a better friend
Like a gardener to a flower I tend
With the water of kindness
With the food of a loving host
Friendship matters the most

A few I had to leave
For their presence in my life caused me to grieve
Some I did not know I had
Until they had been lost
Friendship matters the most.

Subject: Lyr Add: FIND YOUR PEOPLE (Drew Holcomb)
From: Jim Dixon

I found these lyrics online and then tweaked them a bit to agree with what I hear on Spotify. You can also see the “official music video” on YouTube.

FIND YOUR PEOPLE
Written by Drew Holcomb & Kevin Scott Rhoads
As recorded by Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors on “Strangers No More,” 2023.

1. You got to find your people,
The ones that make you feel alright,
The kind you want to stay up with all night.
You got to find your people,
The ones that make you feel whole.
They won't leave your side when you lose control,
The ones that don't let you lose your soul.

2. You got to find your people,
The ones that get the joke,
Who understand what you're saying before a word is spoke.
You got to find your people
That put the needle in the groove.
When you're together, you got nothing to prove.
When you're together, you got nothing to lose.

CHORUS: In a world of strangers, you don't know who to trust.
All you see is danger, trying to find what you lost.
You can't go it alone; everybody needs help.
You got to find your people, then you'll find yourself.

3. You got to find your people
That'll call your bluff,
Who'll ride along when the road is rough.
You got to find your people,
The ones that make you feel equal.
They pick you up and don't put you down,
Help you find your way in the lost and found. CHORUS.

BRIDGE: The ones that understand you
The ones that lend a hand to you
The ones that don't demand anything from you

4. You got to find your people,
The ones that make you feel alright,
That tell you the truth and wish you well.
You got to find your people, then you'll find yourself.
You got to find your people, then you'll find yourself.

Friendship - Via Tim Eriksen.
Complete lyrics by Mr. Bidwell of Connecticut,
as published in the Philadelphia Songster, 1789

FRIENDSHIP
(by Mr. Bidwell of Connecticut)

Friendship to every willing mind
Opens a heavenly treasure:
There may the sons of sorrow find
Sources of real pleasure.
See what employments men pursue,
Then you will own my words are true:
Friendship alone presents to view
Sources of real pleasure.

Poor are the joys that fools esteem,?
Fading and transitory;?
Mirth is as fleeting as a dream,?
Or a delusive story;?
Luxury leaves a sting behind,?
Wounding the body and the mind;?
Only in Friendship can we find?
Pleasure and solid glory.

Beauty, with all its gaudy shows,?
Is but a painted bubble;?
Short is the triumph wit bestows,?
Full of deceit and trouble;?
Fame like a shadow flees away,?
Titles and dignities decay;?
Nothing but Friendship can display?
Joys that are free from trouble.

Learning (that boasted glittering thing)?
Scarcely is worth possessing;?
Riches, forever on the wing,?
Cannot be called a blessing;?
Sensual pleasures swell desire,?
Just as the fuel feeds the fire;?
Friendship can real bliss inspire:?
Bliss that is worth possessing.

Happy the man who has a friend?
Formed by the God of nature;?
Well may he feel and recommend?
Friendship for his Creator:?
Then let our hearts in Friendship join,?
So let our social powers combine,?
Ruled by a passion most divine:?
Friendship with our Creator

Missing You - Todd Snider

[G] I feel like [C] missing you to[G]day [C]

[G] Seems like every[C]thing I see
[G] Brings back another [C] memory
[G] I must feel like [C] missing you to[D7]day

You're never too far from my mind
I feel like crying sometimes
It's never been so hard to do
Especially when it comes to you
You're never too far from my mind

[Am] I know someday I'll see your [C] smiling face again
[G] I don't know when but [D7] I know it's true
[C] One other [G] thing I know, [C] no matter [G] where we go
[C] You love me and I love [D7] you

And lettin' nobody stand in my way
I'm gonna pull down these shades
And play some old songs

Well, nearly 15 years on since it was mentioned above, but here is Ian Sinclair's song "Tak a Dram", which I sang last weekend at a musical gathering where it did so much express the feeling of friendship and love of music.

Tak' A Dram                                Ian Sinclair    (Mirk)

Oh, this evening's passed so quickly,
And the music's almost done;
We've heard the piper and the fiddler,
The singer and his song.
The time has come for us to leave you;
One last song before we go;
Chorus:
So button up and aye be cheery
Tak a dram afore ye go.
Button up and aye be cheery,
Tak a dram afore ye go.

For this night we will remember,
And the music's been just fine;
But the cold, grey land of Caithness
Can be cruel and unkind.
We must bid fareweel and leave you;
Travel through the ice and snow;
So button up, etc.

So goodnight and God be with you,
And watch over you until
We can a' meet here thegither,
And our glasses we will refill.
We'll drink a health tae absent friends
And make the beer and whisky flow,
So button up, etc.

A longtime ago, I wrote this after spending weekend with many folks I loved, and afterwards realizing that I never told anyone how precious they were to me.

I call it The Right Phrases; you can hear it here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO4iTbEiE0g.

The words are in Muscat, listed under a different title, and the lyrics are not correct there. Here is what I wrote:

          THE RIGHT PHRASES

I have spent all my life writing words, reading pages,
talking and singing, my words without end
But with all of these words I've not found the right phrases
to say how I love you, my friend.

I have felt your hand holding mine, and your heart beating,
though you are far away and I'm alone.
And the love that we share grows between us each meeting;
Seeing you means being home.

There are times when the world seems to land on my shoulder,
when I'm tired, and everyone else needs a hand.
Then your smile gives me hope that my world will keep turning.;
you are my courage, my friend.

I started out singing it through, then repeating the first verse. A number of folks wanted a chorus, but nothing I wrote seemed to work. So I use the first verse as a chorus. I sing verse 1, verse 2, verse 1, verse 3, verse 1.
