15 May 10 - 08:55 PM (#2907804) Subject: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Bat Goddess Tom didn't announce this month's sea music singaround at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH, but it happened anyway -- we're just home from a lovely evening of song. The Press Room management had been a bit confuzzled about the fact that, since May 1st was actually the first Saturday, today was the THIRD Saturday despite being a bit earlier in the month than usual, so they'd inadvertently booked an event upstairs that lasted until 5. The event was a very loud "recital" of young bands ("Oh, cool! We get to play in a BAR!") attended by parents and other young afficionados of that sort of music. Made talking downstairs while waiting for the session to begin a bit difficult. But it was worth the wait to watch the faces of the kids, their parents and audience as they came down the stairs. I think they were amazed at the volume singers could achieve WITHOUT amplification. And the harmonies. A couple mothers stuck around to listen and find out more about the music. We hauled in some crew from Gloucester, Boston and Richmond, Maine and even a couple visiting from Mystic who wandered into the trad session last night and were thrilled to find there was a sea music session today. I'd posted the session, too, on the Portsmouth, NH Facebook feed and we drew at least one person from not too far away who was unaware of the session(s). He, too, exclaimed his enthusiasm and will be back. I'll post a song list later, but right now I've got some frantic cleaning of a recently exposed corner to finish before the electrician gets here tomorrow. I think I'm out of enzyme cat odor remover -- hope Febreze will get us through tomorrow. Linn |

It was great to see a crew from Gloucester again, the folks from the Boston area, and our other good friends. I actually had some time to talk with Emery and Chris while we were waiting for the folks upstairs to finish up, and that is highly unusual at a shanty session. The story Earl told was how after his death at Trafalgar, Nelson was shipped home in a cask full of rum, which arrived back in England remarkably dry. Gardi was NOT there -- that was Alexander -- and Barry is Barry O'Brien. Pete Hale's father, Don, was also there, as were Carol Coronis and Bob Frost. Hutch (Emery Hutchins) was there earlier, but couldn't stay until the delayed start, alas. It's not a "Tall Ships Festival" the Piscataqua Maritime Commission (as of an issue last year) aren't suppose to use the words ""tall ships" (though I see they are on their website) and it's not exactly a festival, at least in the folk music sense of the term. The HMS Bounty and the Privateer Lynx (both of which have been in Portsmouth before) will be at the Portsmouth Commercial Fish Pier over Memorial Day weekend. A group of us, as The Dog Watch, will be singing on Saturday afternoon to entertain people waiting in line to tour the ships and again at the evening reception. There is usually admission charged to tour the ships. This is a new location for the tours. That should be "The Figurehead Carver - Tim Perkins" although the figurehead carved was for the Marco Polo. Also shouldn't "The Fine Old Summer Days - Marty Stock" be "The Ways of Man - Marty Stock"? Do you remember where it fell in the progression so I can insert it in my list? I taped the shanty sings for many years and then transcribed and made j-cards, but I stopped doing that for some reason or other. (And I'm also not really up to speed on using my digital recorder.) I'm still not caught up on doing j-cards, either! I like having a quick reference to who was at the session, what songs were sung, what other information came out of the discussion, etcet etcet. And I like having a reference copy of a song to listen to and possibly learn. Linn |

I'm not sure exactly how to contact the singers, but the director of the UNH marine docent program is mark.wiley@unh.edu.
