If I should know how I acquired it, I can't remember for the life of me. I keep getting "update available" flags, but I don't want to touch it until I figure out what it is. Scanning gets no indication of malware. What is this one? |

It had to be there since whenever, but I didn't remember it, and I hadn't been getting update flags from it all the time until recently. |

I get the "unless you have updated this program recently, this may be caused by a virus" and so on. I usually ignore the works and do my own by going directly to the sites. |

25 May 10 - 02:31 PM (#2914100) Subject: RE: Tech: What is this icon? From: JohnInKansas Safer than just clicking unknown icons: RIGHT CLICK and choose "copy shortcut" or "edit shortcut." Paste it into a word processor or text editor, if you need to and read where it wants you to go. "Copy Shortcut" sometimes just pastes as the "clickie" - the "display text" without telling you the URL, but sometimes pastes as the URL; but "Edit Shortcut" should always show the target URL at the bottom of the "edit" window. If the target site is one you recognize, then you can left click and go see what they want you to do. In IE, and probably in other browsers, just hovering over an icon shows you the target URL on the lower information bar (if you've set it up normally, and have "status bar" checked in the View menu like you should) and usually that's enough to identify anything you might want to click. Icons in the Start Up bar (usually at the lower right in Windows) should show a "hint" if you just "hover" over them. The "hint" should show enough info to give some clues about what the icon is, but sometimes just says something vague like "updates available" without telling what's being updated. Right clicking icons in the Start Up bar sometimes will show a "menu" with options that gives additional clues. John |
