13 Aug 99 - 09:16 AM (#104658) Subject: Help! French Cajun Lyrics! From: bignick@execpc.com Hello everyone! I'm looking for some French Cajun Lyrics .. Specifically for "Midland Two Step" (Delafose) and "Choupique Two Step" (Nathan Abshire version). I'm going crazy! I can't find French Cajun lyrics anywhere! I know of two books, Cajun Music: A Reflection of a People by Ann Allen Savoy (Bluebird Press) and "Ye Yaille Chere" that transcribes many French songs. But these two songs aren't in either book. We have a Zydeco band .. but since I've purchased a Mark Savoy Cajun Box, we've been trying to play more French Cajun music .. Maybe somebody knows someone who can help for $? Thank you everybody! I've never heard of gri-gri making it out of Africa before (where I grew up it's the term for a little charm or amulet or something that does something usually bad, like the theory in my gym class, when we had to run around the field and there was a spot where we all got cramps, and somebody said "Y'a un gri-gri la qui fait crever" (there's a charm here that kills us) - made perfect sense to me at the time! I thought there was another term for the Cajuns. Anyway, I have a friend from les parages, so I'll ask. He takes a while to get back to me, especially since his email is in my bollixed Outlook address book right now! |

It should be in the liner notes of one of their tapes. If I come across it I will get back to you. And Gris Gris is common to Cajun and Creole French in Louisiana. The term was most likely introduced by West African slaves in the 18th century. |
