01 Jun 10 - 09:38 AM (#2918215) Subject: Tune Req: Unknown Tune - Help please. From: GUEST,Gareth Hello MudCat, If you go to http://www.myspace.com/englishcontradanceband you'll see and hear a tune called "Help, Can you name that tune". We got it from the playing of Jackie Allen in the UK but have never found the name or composer. We have just finished recording a CD of dance length contra tunes which we can't complete without this tune name. I've tried everyone I know, nothing, so this is trying everyone I don't know. Frankly I'm prepared to offer a small half of a weak beer if someone could help, that's how desperate I am. I've never posted to MudCat before so, if I've broken a convention or upset someone, get over it. G x |

01 Jun 10 - 10:57 AM (#2918258) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Unknown Tune - Help please. From: GUEST It's on MySpace, and as far as I know you don't have to join to play. Thanks for the clicky. G |
01 Jun 10 - 11:17 AM (#2918272) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Unknown Tune - Help please. From: greg stephens Nicely played, can't identify the tune. Mudcat a bit slow today, people normally come up with answers quicker than this! |
01 Jun 10 - 11:26 AM (#2918279) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Unknown Tune - Help please. From: GUEST,leeneia I followed Leadfingers' link. I found 'Can you name this tune?' and clicked on the plus sign. It said 'You must be logged in to do that.' Maybe if the unknown tune changes places with the Caribou Reel, which I can indeed hear... |

01 Jun 10 - 02:10 PM (#2918374) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Unknown Tune - Help please. From: GUEST,nickp (cookieless) Jackie got a lot of the tunes she played from the Portland Collection but I'm pretty sure Gareth & Linda have access to them. That may give a clue though. Nick |
01 Jun 10 - 02:12 PM (#2918377) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Unknown Tune - Help please. From: GUEST Thanks for that, we've got both Portland Collection books, they are great. We didn't get it from there, but it would be funny if that's where it is. Off to the bookshelf. G |

01 Jun 10 - 03:37 PM (#2918446) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Unknown Tune - Help please. From: GUEST,leeneia Now that the tune is the top one, I can play it. I agree with Open Mike that it sounds modern. Well, modern as opposed to a Playford dance from the 17th or 18th century, anyway. If you don't get an answer, I suggest you give it one of those traditional names such as Jackie's Favorite Jackie's Delight Jackie's Fancy or if you want to sound Irish, just plain 'Jackie Allen's.' I enjoyed listening to your playing. ======== I know a beautiful Welsh tune called 'Conset Argyllwth Treffael.' People insisted that 'Conset' didn't make any sense. Eventually I learned that is a Welsh-English form of 'conceit.' But I wouldn't suggest calling it Jackie's Conceit. |
01 Jun 10 - 03:47 PM (#2918455) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Unknown Tune - Help please. From: GUEST Strangely, yesterday I was very moved by a Welsh dance display team at Chippenham Festival. They are called Dawnswyr Tipyn O Bopeth, big hats and beards and everything. I'm not usually a big fan of display dance but they did the slowest longways with such nodding and smiling. Sex on a stick. Better than the movie about a city. G |

02 Jun 10 - 07:31 AM (#2918928) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Unknown Tune - Help please. From: greg stephens Of course, it depends how you play'em, but it seems American to me. And/or composed recently. But that may just be the style in which the syncopations are played. |
02 Jun 10 - 08:45 AM (#2918954) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Unknown Tune - Help please. From: nickp I agree Greg, does seem to come from the recent Contra scene over there. (more than one way of keeping a thread bubbling) |
02 Jun 10 - 01:08 PM (#2919103) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Unknown Tune - Help please. From: GUEST The cassette's gone. Any other name ideas? Boat Band Reel.... |
02 Jun 10 - 02:46 PM (#2919176) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Unknown Tune - Help please. From: GUEST This tune is not in either of the Portland Collections. It sounds recent to me (or if not, at least an updated versions of an old tune). As long as you make a good effort to determine title and composer, as it appears you are doing, it will be OK to include it on a recording without that knowledge. The composer may well surface. 02 Jun 10 - 02:55 PM (#2919183) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Unknown Tune - Help please. From: GUEST,Peter Laban It doesn't appear Irish but you could try (just to be sure) and play it into the search engine at www.tunepal.org |
