The reason given was that after 400 years of broken bones and cracked heads, the event was no longer deemed safe. Anyway, as this Sky News commentary shows, it takes more than a few daft regulations to keep a cheese roller down. On May 30th, a few hardy souls turned out to make sure that, health and safety or no health and safety, the ancient custom would not be allowed to lapse. Good on yer lads. |

Good on yer, lads (and the two ladies who made up the ladies' race!). They had to get past a police presence at the bottom of Cooper's Hill first, but the photos show about 30 people. I'm so proud. |

To be fair, I thought that the reason for cancellation was nothing to do with H&S fears about the event itself but because it had got so popular and well-known that many thousands of people (and vehicles) were turning up from all over the country and beyond, which had become a headache for the committee organising this previously small local event. Nowt to do with stopping the actual runners from cracking their own heads open. |

"So we have brought in Cheltenham-based Events and Management Services to organize a completely new event to include elements of the old Coopers Hill Wake." Proposals would also see the date of the event changed from Spring Bank Holiday to the weekend of 11/12 June." - BBC Right, that's obvious. Have the Events and Management Services widely advertised fake event on the 11/12 and just quietly get on with the real one one the Spring Bank Holiday. |

08 Aug 18 - 06:38 AM (#3942422) Subject: RE: Folklore: Cheese Rolling Back on the Menu From: GUEST,henryp The Guardian reported this in 2010; But it emerged today that the annual cheese-rolling event at Cooper's Hill above Brockworth has become the latest victim of health and safety concerns. This year's event has been cancelled, not because organisers fear that those taking part will hurt themselves, but because the competition has become too popular and is attracting unmanageable crowds. The organisers said: "The attendance at the event has far outgrown the location where it has traditionally been held for several hundred years: last year, more than 15,000 people tried to attend, which is more than three times the capacity of the site." It goes on to reassure disappointed competitors that the committee is working with local authorities and the police to try to find better ways of controlling the crowds, stop the roads from getting clogged up and make sure that ambulances can get through when, almost inevitably, a competitor is injured. This is what The Independent had to say this year; Some competitors travelled from across the world to take part in the series of madcap races, which attracted TV crews from around Europe, while thousands of people lined the course to watch. Rebel cheese rollers have been staging their own unofficial event after health and safety fears caused the official competition to be cancelled in 2010. The cheese is chased 200 yards down the 1:2 gradient Cooper’s Hill at Brockworth. After a year’s hiatus, when police warned against the use of a real cheese, the imitation lightweight foam cheese was replaced with the genuine article. The official event was cancelled after more than 15,000 people turned up as spectators to watch the 2009 competition. Since then it has been held unofficially with the police keeping a watchful eye. |
