03 Jun 10 - 05:52 PM (#2920049) Subject: Tech: slow load then just html shows-help,plea From: katlaughing I have given up trying to figure out what is wrong with my browser or PC and finally asking for your input, please. Pages take forever to load and then, when they do, most of the time what I get is the html code instead what I am supposed to see. I wonder if it has to do with google ads, almost everywhere I go, as I see them trying to load when I watch the bottom left corner where the loading site addy shows up as it tries to load. (Hope that makes sense.) I think this all started when I downloaded Firefox ad blocker, then I took it out because it didn't seem to do much. I have the latest version of Firefox, 3.6, and I have removed it and downloaded it several times, BUT I have not dumped all personal data because I didn't want to lose my bookmarks. Rog showed me how to save them easily, so I guess I could try getting rid of all the data, but now, when I delete Firefox, then go to reload a new download of it, I cannot find where it asks if I want to get rid of it all or not. Now, also, I am not convinced it is just Firefox as I've tried out Opera and it does slightly better, but still slow and also shows up with html. AVG is set to scan daily and has never found any problems. I have run Spybot and Adaware and not found any problems. I have reset my PC to an earlier date and that seemed to help for awhile. I have dumped mega-amts. of temp internet files and that seemed to help for a while, too, but not for very long. I have also defragged and freed up space on my HD, etc. Any clues on what else I can do or what it can be? It's only when I am on the internet, everything else on the PC works fine. My Rog and our son are both having no problems with their units on the same wireless network and both use the same Firefox. I thought it may have been I messed up the settings in my Firefox as it would not keep me logged into google mail no matter what I did, but it seems to have stopped doing that, so who knows. I have reached the end of my tolerance and need help, please!**bg** Thanks! kat |

I've known a few other people to have trouble with it, which is a shame because it was so good at one point... Mind you, I've also heard there's been a bad update with Firefox - it took a friend of mine three or four uninstall-reinstall cycles before it would behave. I would doubt an 'infection'... the security stuff has so much to do fending off the nasties that occasionally it stops the legit stuff working! Uninstalling things systematically, making sure you're covered by something else, should eventually reveal the culprit. |

I can't say that is causing all your problems, but reinstalling browsers over & over won't help if something else is interfering. So..one wonders... what browser are you using to post this? (and you need to know if memory or fragmentation is involved. But if everything else works, whatever the browser looks at...like AV programs is likely. You can just disable AVG temporarily and see if shutting it off makes a difference. |

I had it scanning everyday, yet, when I went into Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs, it said I "rarely" used AVG and hadn't since August of 2009, which is truly weird, as I get a notification box which pops up after every scan, every day. I also didn't see how to shut it off, except to "exit" the AVG "tray" on my tool bar, so we'll see how this posting goes. Thanks. I may try yet another download of Firefox, but am reluctant to do so without getting rid of ALL personal data first which isn't done when go to Tools and follow through on various points from there. My Rog said he'd heard of someone else getting a bad download of Firefox, too, so we shall see. Thanks, again. I'll be back to let you know how this goes through without AVG. |

Though I have not completely uninstalled AVG. Maybe I should do that and Firefox. The other weird thing it has been doing is popping up other websites to which I have been when I have pointed to a completely different site. Arrrggghhh! Since the others are not having the same problems, I figure Firefox has to be it, or the settings, or like you said, AV. Off to dump both and regroup. Thanks this is not loading...the green process bar doesn't even show..I will stop and restart it several times to get it to go... |

I don't use AVG, though, I use Avast, and Spybot S&D, and Zone Alarm. My gut instinct is that you have some sort of malware on your machine, but that's just a guess. |

I will go get Avast and Zone Alarm, forgot about it. I have totally uninstalled AVG and Firefox, including all data...bookmarks, etc. Downloaded a new Firefox and so far, so good, but it may also have to do with removing a DELL program called Browser Address Error Redirector, something Rog nor I have ever seen nor remember before. It said it was used "rarely." I wonder if that could have been the problem all along? Let's see how this goes through. Thanks! |
