Yes, that's right!

to go to our web page, where you can hear one of

JERI's TUNES!!!

Wonderful woman, she's given us two beautiful airs which are now part of a set on our CD. Please listen to the sound clip (.wav file with MP3 attributes, you shouldn't have any problem playing it), you'll love it. She won't know I've posted this til after the weekend, as she's gone to Anna's, but

Thank you, Jeri!

Jeri has written some lovely tunes. I am in the process of learning 3 of hers, Farewell To Reason, Dragonfly and a jig called Frosty's Denial and I am hoping to introduce these tunes into the sessions that I play at in North Wales.

Good luck with your CD. I have listened to the sound clips and enjoyed them.

Hi there everyone. Richard - I didn't know you were a Mudcatter! Have you been on long? We look forward to meeting you too!

Chance would be a fine thing, jo77. What applet thingy are you referring to? The tunes seem to upload pretty quickly & play on Mediaplayer or WinAmp or whatever. They are compressed to the same size as n MP3 file. I'll go & check in case something strange has happened!

The 2 tunes on the CD are Farewell to Reason, as you all saw, & Dragonfly, which are wrapped around Sue's Birthday Waltz. They make a lovely set, I love them.

Our piccolo player lived in Wales for a year & went to some local sessions while he was there; he said there were some marvellous tunes but he can't remember what most of them were called - especially being in Welsh. He'd quite like to introduce some Welsh music into the band's repertoire but I've trawled about the web & there certainly seems to be a dearth of Welsh ABCs!

Sorry - forgot!

The sound bite of Sally Gardens on the web page is the reel - on the CD they play both, starting out with the air & then going into the reel.

I'll post the ABCs of Sragonfly & Farewell to Reason later, if Jeri doesn't mind.

Hello Sue,

I have been unabe to find a collection of Welsh tunes on the web. If you want to learn some, Blodau'r Grug published by the Welsh Folk Dance Society offers a collection of 100.

Here are 3 to get you started:

Ymdaith Caerphilly (The Caerphilly March)
Ymdaith gwyr Dyfnaint (The March of the Devon Men)
Mon (Anglesey)

Why does my typing always go to pot when I'm posting messages? That should have been Dragonfly, of course.

Thanks Jon, I'll print them out and have a go - and give them to Tim. He does have a little book somewhere with some Welsh tunes in, which Debbie has at the moment. Presumably they're traditional. Once I manage to get my hands on it, I'll post them to the Forum.

SueH, re: 'Jeri won't see this until after the wweekend,'...er, AnnaP has a computer.

The CD is wonderful! If you were here at Anna's party, you could listen to it. Debbie, the fiddler in Tam Lin has done some stunning things with my tunes and everything she plays on the CD.

Jon, great to see you here! I'm in the process of learning two of Jon's wonderful tunes. (Ain't the internet great?)

No good hiding behind someone else's computer, Jeri!!

You didn't take it with you, did you???? (The CD, not the computer)

I'll expect thousands of orders now [BG]!!

I hope you're having a good time there, I thought you wouldn't be playing about on the computer, too busy singing & playing..... Debbie will be so pleased to hear your compliments, as long as she hasn't drowned at Copredy over the weekend. Weather is still dire here, I hope you were able to get out in the kayaks. I really envy you.

Who said the sound clips were breaking up? Have you tried saving to disc & then playing - I do this with everything now as I always get a jerky play in realtime, even with an ISDN connection.

Are Jon's tunes nice, Jeri? Anything we'd like for the next CD (giggle)? At the rate their bookings are going, we might be able to afford another one before too long!

Excuse the typing, again!

Sue

Sue, try them and use them if they are of any use to you.

I don't know what the others are using to play the sound clips on but I use Windows Media player2. It seems to me that the "use default buffering setting" does not work and the buffer setting of 3 seconds that mine was originaly set to does not give enough time on my system. Apart from saving to disk, it is possible to stop the clip and wait for more of it to load before playing or to alter the buffer setting. I did try to play your sound clips again to see what setting I would need but I keep getting URL not found messages.

I don't know much about WAV files but I did a little bit of playing around with them a couple of months ago and found that in some cases you can really reduce the sample rate without having any noticible impact on the quality of the sound - If you can get away with something like that, it will reduce download times.

Jeri, Yes the internet is great but I fear I'm getting a little bit carried away with it all at the moment.

Help....

For some reason, my computer uses QuickTime to play these - then, after a few minutes of waiting, instead of a tune, I get a picture of a piece of broken film....???

I have RealPlayer, which is supposed to play MP3 files.

Any suggestions from you computer whizzes????

Sorry, j0 77, I must not have made myself clear. I can play anything from the mp3 page with no problem. I CAN'T play these tunes off the TamLin Web Page. I get a picture /image of torn film instead of a tune.

I'm not real computer-literate but I know RealAudio is my default player - yet when I click on the tune titles I get the QuickTime logo while "waiting".

Do I need a different plug-in for these?

Barbara - I get the "Drowsy Maggie" box, too - and there's another one on the far right that has a different title inthe popup box than the title listed. I get the same error message that you do if I click on the "moving music" boxes. If I click on the TITLES, I get my QuickTime problem. Oh well....

Hello all

This is really weird; I've definitely got the files & links named right.

The clips were taken off the CD using Goldwave & saved as .wav files with MP3 extensions. They seem to play on WinAmp & Windows Media Player OK; they don't play at the right speed using Realplayer & RealJukebox doesn't find them as they are still .wav files. I also have Quicktime & Crescendo (as plugins in IE4) & I think unfortunately that no matter how you set up IE4, sooner or later Windows Media Player manages to reset itself as the default. I've never been able to play the Australian tunes on Mark Gregory's site (http://www.chepd.mq.edu.au/boomerang/songnet/). These say they're .mov files, & I always get an error (from Windows Media Player!) saying it can't open them, please check the pathname is correct.

I'll try saving them again as ordinary wav files & then converting to to MP2; if they play OK then with Realplayer etc, then I'll put them on the site as well so there's a choice. (br>

Thank you for the tunes Jon, I'll print them out. We try & get a good mix of 'real' traditional tunes, contemporary tunes written in traditional style, songs etc.

Barbara - have you been on the TamLin site before - or are you using some sort of proxy server or linking to a mirror site? It sounds as though you are somehow getting the old page - which had different sound clips on. Try refreshing the page or clearing out your cache.

Lonesome EJ - what a lovely compliment! instructions for getting the CD are on one of the other pages on the site (I think it's on the 'News' page). The cheapest way for you to do it is to send us an international money order or banker's draft, I think. Because we don't have a record label or distributor (the band made the CD primarily for local fans, & to send to folk clubs, festivals etc) we just have to send them out direct. I can email you direct with the address etc if you are a Mudcat member or let me have your email address.

Barbara - I see what's happened. I made the changes using Frontpage Express & it didn't delete out the old hyperlinks, so each of them had a link pointing to the old clip & the new one. I've uploaded a corrected page now, so there shouldn't be any errors.

From: SueH

Hi qrs

I assume you're 'part-time' musicians, like Tam Lin?

I've now uploaded proper .MP3 files to the site as well, so they should be playable using RealPlayer. The sound quality could be better, probably because I messed about resampling the wav files for the correct rate, & then converted them. The .MP3 files are a bit shorter, but I couldn't work out how to put them into a lower rate in Goldwave that would convert to MP3, so I had to use 44100. The wav files on the site are in a lower rate than that.

Please let me know, anyone, if you still can't play them.

Sue

Subject: RE: Jeri's Tune - Please Listen!!
From: j0_77

If as you say you made a wave file and then changed the 'extension' to MP3 it is not suprising that folks cannot hear them. MP3 is a compacting utility like pkzip. A 5 meg wave file is compacted by MP3 to as little as half a meg. A player trying to uncompact a wav file will either lockup or fail. A simple solution is to resave the files with a 'wav' extension at the web page. Hope that helps

Subject: RE: Jeri's Tune - Please Listen!!
From: SueH

Sorry jo 77, you have obviously misunderstood me. The orginal sound clips on the site were .wav files with MP3 extensions (but still .wav files nonetheless - the process made them more compact, apart from anything else, whilst not degrading the sound too much ) & I have now also put up MP3 files; to do this I resampled the wave files at 44100, & then converted them to .MP3.

What people could or couldn't hear them on originally depended on what facilities they had on their computer, & what their default players were. Ir may be that someone with an older version of Media player will have a problem with the .wav files as they are, if so & they post & let me know, I can always put them on as ordinary 16-bit signed versions.

If you send a check to him for $19.20, he'll notify Sue and she'll mail the CD.

I don't feel that comfortable putting the gentleman's address here for all the world to see, but I'll be happy to send it to anyone who's interested. You can email me.

Disclaimer: I'm not making any money off this. I am grateful to the band for recording my tunes, plus I've really enjoyed my copy of the CD, and think these guys deserve to be heard.

Hi jo_77

I can't understand why you're having a problem; what hardware/software have you got? You should be able to play the wav files with something like WinAmp, & the MP3s with pretty much anything which supports it, even Windows Media Player.

If you tell me your setup I can always convert it & email it to you - got to be as quick as keep trying to download it!

This file won't open with my wave player program - I get a message saying "File Corrupt."

The file will open if you go to:
Start/Programs/Accessories/Multimedia/Windows Media Player, and then open the file, or -
Find a file called mplayer2.exe(possibly other versions of mplayer will work?) and double click on it.
Mine's located in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\mplayer2.exe

For Mac users, you can download some programs so you can listen to sound files from http://mac.org/audio-video/ Maybe "SoundApp" does .wav files - I dunno.
