There is a video trailer here: Winter's Bone movie preview It sounds like the music in the movie is worth a listen. A taste of the music is at the beginning of the preview. "The topography of chilly hollows and ragged forests is filmed in a way that emphasizes its bleakness. There are banjos and fiddles, as well as guitars, and some beautiful old mountain ballads are performed on camera. Some of the cast members are nonprofessional actors, and nearly all are wary, watchful and taciturn, speaking their few words in faultless regional accents." NYT review here click Alice |

I have been intending to find a copy of the book and just have not got around to it. Daniel Woodrell who lives in the southeast corner of Missouri has written several novels set in the Ozarks. I did not recognize but four names among the musicians but two were from the general area where Woodrell lives and the other, Billy Ward, I have seen and introduced at a few fiddle contests in Mountain View, Arkansas over the years. Van Colbert is a distinctive banjo player and Marideth Sisco, I know through a mutual friend. I was told that she had an interest in the music of May Kennedy McCord who was a fixture in the early days of interest in Ozark folklore and the source for "Palace Grand" which was picked up by Joan Baez and others. Van Colbert usually performs at the festival held annually in West Plains, Missouri in June. Dirt Road Delight is Billy Ward's band. There will, at least, be some southeast Missouri flavor to the music in the film. That area is quite rich in the Ozark mountain music traditions. |

That harmonica player has got some of the sexy moves I've ever seen as mouth harp players go! I do not mean that in a sexist way, just that I appreciate an artist who gets into their music in such a physical way like a classical violin soloist I saw who stretched onto her tip toes when playing Beethoven's Violin Concert in D major. I love the lead singer's voice. I'll want to see this just for the music and, I hope, as someone else said, it is better than what they did with Cold Mountain. Thanks for the links. |

The main character is a girl of 17 whose father is a meth dealer. He had put up their humble home as security on bail, and now he's skipped. The girl is left with the responsibility of keeping her family sheltered and together. It is not a Disneyfied fantasy about country life. |

It is grim. http://www.nometh.org/ About a year ago, the KC Star had an article about a conference held in kansas for country sheriffs. The subject was how to deal with the young children found in meth labs. One thing they were taught to look for was little children with burned lungs. There is also some fear among Ozark folk that when films and novels such as this become popular folk outside the region will assume that they represent the norm for Ozark culture rather than the exception. |

I'm originally from the part of the Ozarks were this is set (Christian County MO), and I still have family there. Yes, there are hillbillies, and yes, they are strange people, but most people in the Ozarks are nice, hard working, and honest people (and most aren't hillbillies). My family that still lives doesn't do meth, and I don't know any one there who does. By the way, I live in Atlanta, GA and there are tons of people here on meth. Drugs are cooked, manufactured, and used anywhere there are people. The only people I know in the Ozarks who do "drugs" are the old rodeo cowboys/bull riders who are using prescription pain killers since they are in such incredible pain from all the years of rodoeing. They're not junkies, they are just trying to get through their days with out dying from pain. Please go visit the Ozarks. They are beautiful and majestic! Some great people have come from this area - George Washington Carver and Langston Hughes. Laura Ingalls Wilder chose to move there with her family, and you can visit her home (great for kids who love her books). Brad Pitt, Kathleen Turner, and Dennis Weaver are great actors from the Ozarks. The Ozarks are a great treasure, and they are filled with good people. |

It isn't like the Ozarks I lived in, but then it's about 150 miles away, down by the Arkansas border. The music is different in kind from Cold Mountain, which has an original score. These are songs people still play and listen to. It is good, but not an important enough part of the film to warrant seeing it just for the tunes. |

It is like many other films that use music create atmosphere or create a mood or possibly add an element of authenticity. From what I know of the musicians and what I have read the film crew has made good use of regional musicians rather than import big names that might look impressive in ads and on the markee. |

I live in a very blue collar neighborhood. I see what hopping from job to job does to people. My next door neighbor's grandson was shot by the police last year, allegedly because he combined alcohol and Prozac and became violent. Possibly because the local police are a bunch of thugs. The message movies like this give some people is, why do anything for these people, since they're a bunch of deranged druggies. |

It doesn't portray the people of Missouri this way or even the people of the Ozarks or even the people in the counties where this is set. It's just a story, a hopeful story, dealing with the lives of some of the people there. I have a brother living and working in the Mountain Grove, West Plains area who actually knows some of the people. He's director of a regional CAP Agency. And my own S.O. has lived among the people where the film was actually shot. She also knows people who appear in the movie. Arkie met her when we were in Mountain Grove in 2008. I haven't read the book but the film presents an accurate view of certain rural folks in the area. It's also, in my opinion, a deeply moving film and very well shot, directed and acted. We drove 120 miles to see the film as it wasn't going to play in our area. Well worth the trip. - Mark |

The documentaries are as clear-eyed, honest and unpatronising as the film itself. Great movie, presented in its DVD incarnation with real love and care. |

It does not depict all of the people who live in the Ozarks, or even the majority of folk in the Ozarks. For the most part, the people who live in the Ozarks are much like those one would find in any community. But in some instances there are people much like the worse of those depicted in the novel and the film. The film also portrayed some strong qualities and determination that is to be found in people who have endured extreme poverty and even neglect. |
