Subject: R2 magazine formerly Rock'n'Reel
From: GUEST,Sean McGhee

It's been a good while since I posted on here, and I've definitely not since we changed the magazine's name on issue 15 (the current issue is 21).
Wonder if anyone on Mudcat has been regularly reading us, discovered us recently or is yet to check out the mag.
Would love to hear your thoughts.
Cheers

Issue 21 of R2 is now on sale. Yet another bursting-at-the-seams edition includes interviews with Eliza Carthy talking about her new album recorded with her mother Norma Waterson, and her disgust at the BNP, Irish singer-songwriting and folk legend Paul Brady, American folk heavyweight Judy Collins. Ravi Shankar's 90th birthday is celebrated with a 'Shankar A to Z', contemporary Irish singer-songwriter Fionn Regan chats about his new album, UK folk supremo, Jon Boden (of Spiers and Boden and Bellowhead) talks about his solo work, prog and beyond rockers Solstice celebrate their thirtieth anniversary and we pay tribute to the recently deceased Tim Hart of Steeleye Span with contributions from Span frontwoman Maddy Prior plus our definitive festival guide includes 500+ festivals. Elsewhere we talk to roots-rockers Pressgang on their return to the fray, and quiz Po'Girl re their forthcoming tour and talk to yet another stunning young blues player Scott McKeon as well as many more of the most happening acts on the roots, rock, blues, singer-songwriter, country and world music scenes … acts like Martha Tilston, Cath & Phil Tyler, Madison Violet, O'Hooley & Tidow, Emily Portman, Brooks Williams and Rory McLeod.

And we've all your regular favourites: the most extensive review section of any music magazine in the UK (check your wallet before reading; it can be an expensive pleasure); our First Takes round-up of hot new bands and exciting singer-songwriters; It Started With A Disc (R2's writers remember where it all began); Open Mic, for which performers both famous and less so are placed under the spotlight as we ask them some pertinent questions. There's our main-page and back-section news round-ups; the fascinating industry feedback of Inside Job; our Under The Influence and Venues We Love columns, plus new regulars Funny You Should Say That (humour, comment and opinion in a radical remix) and our new On The Road Again feature. Bliss!

Each bumper issue of R2 consists of a hundred colour-packed pages covering the best sounds around and at a recession-busting cover price of only £3.95. What's not to love?

Our free covermounted Un-Herd CD compilation this issue features tracks from Lau and Karine Polwart, Runrig with Julie Fowlis, Tyde, Rod Jones, Oli Brown, Solstice, Karnataka, Scott McKeon, Jimmy Bowskill, Band From County Hell, O'Hooley & Tidow, Rebekah Findlay and more. Listen and read … it's a great combination.

You can also subscribe for a whole year at the recession-beating sum of £19.75 (UK price): that's six issues of R2 and six ear-boggling Un-Herd CDs. Brilliant!

Alternatively you can buy single copies of our current issue and a selection of back issues via our website: www.rock-n-reel.co.uk/subscribe.cfm

Of course, you can also find R2 in WH Smith, HMV and in lots of other newsagents and retail outlets across the UK. We're distributed by COMAG and so any newsagent can order R2 for you, fuss-free; just ask them to get you a copy. (In the unlikely event of any difficulties please let us know, so we can sort it out.)

You can also buy R2 by going direct to our parent company's website at http://www.terranovamusic.com/shop/index.php?cPath=35
where you can also find full details of our rates if you are planning to order or subscribe from outside of the UK.

However you do so, however, make sure you get hold of your copy of R2 and experience for yourself the most satisfying combination of music and words currently available in printed page and digital disc combination; it's a winning formula.

Not read it for 10 years when my cd albums were reviewed (that long ago ? !!)
I think I might have to register my disgust with Eliza Carthy ...

Yes, an excellent read, very well written and produced and the cover mount CD is always a treat.

I am but a poor student so I don't buy magazine's often. However, when I do it's always R2. I really love it, especially for discovering new talent.

I suppose my one pet peeve is that sometimes I find it hard to tell the difference between an advert and a normal article, which I personally find really annoying, but I'm sure it's just me.

Overall, I think it's the best folk orientated magazine out there- I have tried a few but always go back to R2. I also find the interviews informative instead of nosey, which I find is where a lot of magazine fail (I want to know about the artists genius, not what car they recently purchased!) Also, I find other magazines target older people too much and I lose interest. However, R2 is very much targeted towards an interest rather than an age group, which is great.

I actually never knew you posted on here otherwise I would have been pestering you for a job long ago...

Sinéad.

Never knew the name had changed. I'm obviously out of touch. Quite liked the old name actually(I quite like old folk tunes too)

I didn't realise the name had changed, and probably would not have connected "R2" with RocknReel, so thanks for letting us know. Mouth-watering lineup of content. Glad to hear you're continuing strong -

Woooooops. I obviously missed the other thread the last time it popped up on the radar screen - there's a clear mention of the mag's new title in its last posts. I must've been out a-Maying...

Efsee: honestly, don't go there. It's not worth it. Mark Stevens is a BNP member and activist - apparently he's the one who teaches them to morris dance. He clearly didn't like Eliza denouncing his intrepid leader, and all he and his loathsome party stand for, in the latest issue of R2.

BTNG!

Issue 22 of R2 is now on sale. As ever it's another bursting-at-the-seams edition. The Fairport's Cropedy Convention special celebrates the 30th anniversary of Fairport Convention's annual festival with an Alphabetti Spaghetti overview of the event cooked up by Simon Nicol and Ken Hunt. Elsewhere the folk-rock theme is further explored in interviews with Iain Matthews and Little Johnny England, and with up and coming Hull band, Circus Envy. There's Irish folk in the shape of Michael McGoldrick, sea shanties courtesy of ten-piece Fisherman's Friends, plus The Black Keys – one of the most happening purveyors of contemporary blues flavoured rock.

Kevin Barker, American nu-folk pioneer is quizzed on his activities. We catch up with Ian McNabb and find out what he's been up to since his Icicle Works days and we learn why singer-songwriter Sandi Thom has the blues. Elsewhere we talk to Willy Vlautin, frontman of Richmond Fontaine; there's exciting UK blues band The Mustangs, plus Scottish folk/dance crossover heavyweights Shooglenifty, and many more of the most happening acts on the roots, rock, blues, singer-songwriter, country and world music scenes … acts like Ian Prowse, Spook Of The Thirteenth Lock, Two, Sam Sallon, The Whybirds, Dirtmusic, Kirsty McGee, Pokey LaFarge, and Kristina Olsen.

And we've all your regular favourites: the most extensive review section of any music magazine in the UK (check your wallet before reading; it can be an expensive pleasure); our First Takes round-up of hot new bands and exciting singer-songwriters; It Started With A Disc (R2's writers remember where it all began); Open Mic, for which performers both famous and dues-paying are placed under the spotlight while we ask them some pertinent questions. There's our main-page and back-section news round-ups; the fascinating industry feedback of Inside Job; our Under The Influence and Venues We Love columns, plus new regulars Funny You Should Say That (humour, comment and opinion in a radical remix) and On The Road Again (our tour-alert service). Bliss!

Our free cover-mounted UnHerd CD compilation this issue features a Cropredy festival theme with tracks from Fairport Convention, Thea Gilmore, Matthews' Southern Comfort, Little Johnny England, Martyn Joseph, Rick Wakeman, Circus Envy, Mabon, Judy Dyble, Leatherat, Ahab and more. Listen and read … it's a great combination.
