13 Jun 10 - 10:13 PM (#2927194) Subject: BS: Paul is Undead From: ichMael I was generally depressed, watching the wreckage of my youth, as Sir Paul McCartney turned up at the White House the other day to accept the sort of honors that used to go to the likes of Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong — you know, old guys. What made it worse was how the announcers on National Public Radio felt obliged to explain to their listners who the Beatles were and why they were important. (Are any NPR listeners too young to remember the Beatles?) One mentions the Beatles. Another responds, "You know, that's that band Paul McCartney was in before Wings." Response: "Yes, that's right" and "Okay now I remember." That was just 1984. Now it's 2010, 26 years later. 26 year olds these days were born 14 years after the Beatles broke up. It's not the 60s any more. |

The other night one of our PBS channels carried (for pledge week) the 'return to Shea stadium' concert, recorded last year, he seemed every bit as dynamic as at the first Shea bash. What is his secret? By the way, and co-incidentally, today is the coral anniversary of "I've Just Seen a Face", recorded 35 years ago at Abbey Road studio on June 14, 1975. Fans of the song who have not already done so should go to YouTube, search the title, and enjoy the many amateur 'cover' versions available there. |

It's certainly not the first Beatles recording ~ not in 1965. Was it perhaps the first recorded at Abbey Road studios? Or is it just that it's a song recorded on today's date? Beatles' first US release was "I Want To Hold Your Hand"; not sure of the date, but certainly prior to my high-school graduation date of 1965. I believe that their very first single release (in the UK, of course) was "Please Please Me." Sir Paul's "return to Shea Stadium" concert was not actually held at Shea, which had been demolished just a year earlier, but at its replacement as the new home field of the NY Mets, Citi Field, built immediately adjacent to its predecessor. |

Beatles' first US release was "I Want To Hold Your Hand" Only that it's a KILLER song, and recorded on yesterday's date. But "Yesterday" was recorded on a different date - I think. "I Want To..." was their first US release on Capitol. I think that "She Loves You", on Swan, may have beaten it by a few days, but I'm not sure. I'm not sure about the Heisenberg principle either. |
