Edward Gorey has shown that a limerick can be shocking and literate at the same time. The best are in bad taste, but still palatable. I read his Lure of the Limerick in my teens. I have also read one of the Legman collections. The most masterful limericks of all, however, were those written by Edward Gorey. They can be found in the collection "Amphigorey", I believe, and should be read with the illustrations. |
