What is this song? [Silent Worship]

We need the 'cat slueths. This is a very old song apparently, one that Beth's grandad used to sing to her, and as I know several out there are old enough to be her grandad :-) I thought there may be a chance.

All we have to go on is a verse,

Have you not seen my darling
Out in the garden there
Pruning the roses and (lilies)?
For she is twice as fair

Be wonderful if someone could come up with any info.

It's called "Silent Worship" and is an English translation of a piece from a Handel opera.

"Translation" care of Ked Kobick:

Did you not hear My Lady
    Go down the garden singing
    Blackbird and thrush were silent
    To hear the alleys ringing...

Oh saw you not My Lady
    Out in the garden there
    Shaming the rose and lily
For she is twice as fair.

Though I am nothing to her
Though she must rarely look at me
And though I could never woo her
I love her till I die.

    Surely you heard My Lady
    Go down the garden singing
    Silencing all the songbirds
    And setting the alleys ringing...

But surely you see My Lady
    Out in the garden there
    Rivaling the glittering sunshine
With a glory of golden hair.

Original Lyrics in Italian, with Literal Translation

    Non lo diro col labbro
    Che tanto ardir non ha;
    Forse con le faville
    Dell'avide pupille,
    Per dir come tutt'ardo,
    Lo sguardo parlera

I will not say it with my lips
    Which have not that courage;
    Perhaps the sparks
    Of my burning eyes,
    Revealing my passion,
    My glance will speak.

WOW! what a result. Beth is over the moon.

Thanks Greg and Bert, this place never ceases to amaze me, it took FOUR minutes to solve Beths 40 year old query.

We've just had a recent thread-revival about this:

Req/ADD: Silent Worship (Somervell, Handel)

See my April 10th post if you want to download the sheet music. There's also discussion of this song in the Kenneth McKellar thread:

Obit: Kenneth McKellar (June 23 1927-April 9 2010)

I play this on my mountain dulcimer. It is easier than you'd think.
