Góilín Club, Dublin - coming events

Hi all,

Just to let you know that Góilín Club (the longest running singers club in the world) is coming close to the end of its 31st season.

Friday is the 18th of June (anniversary of the battle of Waterloo) so there will be a distinct Napoleonic feeling to the night and we should be treated to visions of mighty armies crossing the alps, Moscow in flames, Bloucher's infamy, Elba, St. Helena, wounded huzzars etc. etc. (Wellington MIGHT get a mention).

The following Friday 25th June we have Roisín White as our guest.
Roisin was born near Kilkeel, in the Mourne mountains area in south County Down. She remembers her mother singing all kinds of songs around the house which gave her a life-long interest in songs. Learning the Irish language at school, she became interested in the literature and poetry of her country, realising that many of the poems were in fact songs. In 1974 she went to Inisheer, the smallest of the Aran islands to improve her Irish. There she became aware of their traditional singing or, as she perceived it then, natural singing. Roisín's love of song was furthered when she moved to Armagh to teach and was able to meet the many renowned traditional singers of the area. Roisin sings a eclectic mix of songs which have been passed onto her by the likes of Joe Holmes, Eddie Butcher, Paddy Tunney, Bridget Tunney, Sarah Anne O'Neill and Robert Cinnamond. This night is not to be missed.

Friday 02 July will be the last night for this season and in the tradition of the Góilín it will be a Club night (i.e. no guest) the last night is always well attended and always a fantastic night of singing from the floor.
Góilín meets at 9:30 Irish Time (around 10:00) in The Teacher's Club, Parnell Square, Dublin. Entrance €3.00, and all visitors/singers are welcome.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Last night was brilliant, helmets flashing, sabres slashing, cannons crashing, one could almost smell the smoke and feel the heat of the battle, peace didn't break out until about 1am.

Should have provided a link to the Góilín website here and also to the notice for the Frank Harte Festival which is not to be missed.
