From: GUEST,Julie Pagliarulo My great grandfather changed our surname spelling to something like Klemitze or klemowski or something similar. It was changed to Clement, an English or French sounding name. Is there any Russian surname that comes close to Clement? I know it starts with a k. Not knowing the spelling has put my research to a halt. Please help! Thanks, Julie |

In particular, the letters "i" and "j" are interchangeable, as are "h" and the sound "ch", and the letter "h" may sometimes appear as "g". For example, if father's name was Peter, then the last name (surname) was Petrov (it is form of word Peter which is answer the question "whose you are?"). That is why the most widespread Russian last names: Ivanov, Petrov, Vasiliev, Nikitin, Tarasov, Titov, Fedoseev, Fedorov, Sidorov, Alekseev, Egorov, Demidov, Mihailov, Andreev, Alexandrov. This would yield the Russian surname Klementov or Clementov, depending on the transliteration. |
