Subject: I know a Milk maid
From: Pierre Le Chapeau

"Does any body on Mudcaters know the continuation of this verse.
I am trying to learn Napoleonic folk songs and from what a character told me today in Greenwich apparently it is.
I quote

I know a Milk maid
Who milked a Bull
'she sure got
"A bucket full?
A Bucket full
A Bucket Full
I knew a Milk Maid
Who Milked a Bull.

I have found it .
Its is not a song in its self but a verse from a song entitled "Martin"Old English Folk songs.
Its has appeared in the televised Napoleonic series " Sharp" and on the film Wicker man with Edward wood ward?
I correct the above verse.

I know a Milk Maid
who Milked a Bull,
With every stroke ,
A bucket Full

"A Bucket full
A bucket Full
With every stroke
a Bucket full

I know a milk maid who milked a cow?
The silly Lass
she did not know how,
fumbling and guessing
she pulled wrong tit
poor milk maid covered in sh and so on.

Also a verse from another (childrens) song:

Oh Mary, oh Mary was milking a cow
Milking a cow and she didn't know how
She pulled at the tail instead of the tit
And all she got back was a bucket of ... sweet violets,
etc

Not sure what the Napoleonic connection might be. Who's The Fool Now has been published in England since ~1600.

From: Jim Dixon

From The Idiom of the People: English Traditional Verse by Cecil J. Sharp & James Reeves (London: Heinemann [1958]), page 221:

WELL DONE LIAR

I saw a wren kill a man
Well done Liar
I saw a wren kill a man
Give him his due
I saw a wren kill a man
With a dag in his hand
Isn't that a comical thing to be true

I saw a maid milk a bull
Well done Liar
I saw a maid milk a bull
Give him his due
I saw a maid milk a bull
Every stroke a bucket full
Isn't that a comical thing to be true
