From Monday 28th June there will be a Come- All - Ye at Foots Cray.
Join us at
The Seven Stars, Foots Cray High Street (next door to Lidl).
The pub dates from the 1600s and is distinctive for its Kent Weather boarding exterior. Park in the exterior area of Lidl's car park, or take the bus. The 51, R1, and R11 stop nearby. The A20 is a couple of minutes away.The pub serves a perfectly quaffable draught Courage Best.
All acoustic music and song will be welcome, and we love to jam.
There is live music at The Seven Stars on Fridays, and the landlord is keen to have us there. Tonight when we dropped in we found it very quiet, and the few regulars in there were all over 40, and enthusiastic about us being there. One or two have even asked to join in. Come along and join us at 8.30 every Monday.

Great news GF, a historic riverside pub with real ale at £2.25 a pint, a garden, friendly locals, a welcoming landlord and accessible by public transport, excellent venue, what's the catch?!

I think you'll find the R1 doesn't quite make it to Footscray but the 233, 321 and 492 do and they all run late services

That puts it a direct bus ride away from Bexleyheath, Dartford, Eltham, Greenhithe, Lee, Lewisham, New Cross, Orpington, Sidcup, Swanley, St Mary Cray, Welling and Woolwich - now that sounds well connected for anyone who wants a drink without driving!

Plus you can do your shopping next door before you go in :-)

The R11 stops at the traffic lights. Just cross the High Street and walk down. The pub is on the left, next door to Lidl.

It would be really good to see some of those who tried the Foresters in Wilmington but were put off by the venue - especially on opening night next Monday

The football match that night is Brazil v Chile - not a lot of local interest but The Seven Stars will be showing the match a bit further round the pub and at low volume

So you can join in the session and check the score from time to time or ignore the football altogether

Also you could of course watch the football and ignore the session but I'm not sure I should be suggesting that .........

Last night's Friday Folk was excellent, with the fantastic Andy Smythe Band...but.... extremely poorly attended..... two obscure football teams playing kept people away.

Monday - Seven Stars at Footscray
Tuesday - The British Oak at Blackheath
Wednesday - Folkmob at Eltham
Thursday - Change of Horses at Farnborough
Friday - Orpington Friday Folk at ..... Orpington

the total distance from Blackheath to Farnborough calling in at all the other venues is 12.4 miles

I live 5.2 miles from the British Oak and 7.9 miles from the Change of Horses.

Who's a lucky boy then!

YES!!!!

Excellent venue, very appreciative locals (moved to photography!) and some wonderful performers turned up - this could run and run.

Already we have sussed out the garden as a potential festival site

The garden runs down to the River Cray - could have gone paddling but recommend Crocs in case of glass. A historic country pub with the genuine atmosphere but surrounded by industry - you wouldn't have known.

The barmaid was an instant convert and reckoned we were cool!!!

I am well pleased with this pub. No intrusive t.v. or machines. In fact the t.v. in the restaurant area was off ! They appear to have a reasonable lunchtime menu, at a sensible price, so might go shopping at Lidl one lunchtime, and sit out in the extensive garden. There are plenty of bench tables at pub level, and then it is stepped down to three more at the riverside. There were ten of us tonight, but there is seating for around twenty in the restaurant area. The beer was nicely chilled, and the locals, and bar staff extremely appreciative.

Had a prior committment at The Beacon in Tun Wells last night but will get over next week if I can persuade someone to give me a lift or suss out reasonable public transport(having an operation on my ankle on Friday so off driving for a few weeks).

I'm not very good (yet?) though, so locals may not be quite so appreciative :-)

Where are you travelling from Rob? We could collect you from either Orpington or St Mary Cray station. Buses come this way from Tunbridge Wells, but I don't know how late they run.

According to Danielle the barmaid, the pub is normally empty by 9.30 on a Monday and she reckoned that the seven locals stayed late purely because of us. Also one group were disappointed that their friends had left just before we arrived, said they would have loved it!

The three in the garden appeared to be ignoring us until ten to eleven when a voice came through the open door saying "let's have a Leonard Cohen one!"

Pete - you might have missed the thread name on the lyrics and knowledge page. Unless it is refreshed by postings every day, it can even drop off the page. Mudcat members have a personal page, and can trace threads, giving them a personal list on their personal page .I would have thought though, that The Foresters thread would be more likely to drop off the page. I'm going to put some links into the new website, and this should help.

GF: I won't be able to make tomorrow's session after all. Doc's ordered me to stay mainly still and quiet with elevated leg until at least Wednesday. Only allowed to stay within 200 yards of home and "absolutely no question" of me going to Orpington and beyond on public transport.

I must say, the way I feel right now, I'd be surprised if I felt up to it tomorrow anyway. Bit optimistic so soon post-op.

Hope I can make it next week.

OK, I've been doing some research

As far as I can see, although having once been one of the major beers of London, coming from the East End of London, and despite having been merged into one of the major brewers in the UK - Bass Charrington - there is currently no beer in the UK under the name of Charringtons

I stand to be corrected if anyone knows better

As you can all see folks - Raffles is a Bear of much brain! Thanks for all the brewery research. It was great to have Ron with us last night, and hope that he will come again, when he hasn't got a gig on. It would be good to have some more people, especially some box players, or fiddlers.

No station nearby but get the train to Sidcup then 51 bus towards Orpington. Go to Foots Cray Post Office which is half a mile down the hill from Sidcup High Street, get off immediately the bus turns right at the Foots Cray traffic lights and walk back a few yards to Foots Cray High Street as if the bus had gone straight on.

Going back the 51 goes to Welling Station or connects with the 286

So far, I'm having a Grrrreat Birthday. I decided that cooking is O U T out. Went first to The Seven Stars, but they only do food Monday to Friday. We went up to the White Cross, and had a lovely meal, and naughty dessert too!Hope Pierre makes it tomorrow, along with many others. Mrs Bear makes exceedingly good cakes !!!!

This is a great venue - a genuine riverside country pub in a town setting, we have a warm welcoming session, it's free entry and the beer is reasonably priced!

There are LOADS of people we know in our catchment and it would be wonderful if a few more found us on Monday nights, this is a great session waiting to be discovered

May I say that having a birthday is not mandatory folks. Just because 90% of this thread's contributors were born in July does not make this venue exclusive ! All are welcome, but especially fiddle, and melodeon players.

GF: Once again I won't make it, I'm afraid. I did too much on my leg last week and cracked the cast on Friday. Doc says I need to take it REALLY easy for a few days since I have the rest of my life to live with the consequences of how I handle the recovery from this.

Pete the journey on a 233 bus from Eltham Station is only about 20 minutes! They leave the Station at 29 & 59 past the hour. Or stay on the 286 to Sidcup Station and catch a 51 - but there may be road works. I might be able to arrange a lift so, if you are ready for pick up at say 19:45. Speak to you later ...

Re the roadworks at Sidcup station this is my specialist subject!

They have no effect when travelling from Eltham towards Orpington, but you get a two mile diversion on the return journey to travel the 250 yards past Sidcup station.

The 286 connects with 3 different buses that go to The Seven Stars. It shares the same bus stop (L) as the 321 and 233 outside Dorothy Perkins in Eltham High Street, or if you stay on to Sidcup Station it connects with the 51. You get the same choice coming back

The published timetable (not the same as reality!) shows the following return services from Foots Cray

321 - 2254, 2306, 2318, 2330
233 - 2247, 2317, 2347
51 - 2248, 2303, 2318, 2333

the 286 is half hourly at that time of night, the last one leaving Sidcup at 2349

What a sad person I am ....

If however a kind soul offers you a lift, jump at it and save yourself the bovver!!

I wonder who Charles is? Foots Cray is not in the Duchy of Cornwall.... Hello Woodsie... Thanks to all who turned up last night, eight.25 performers and 4.75 audience. (Mr Bear did one song) Mrs Bear's cakes were delicious, we had some great music, and there were some attentive customers in the bar. What a difference in atmosphere. Plans are afoot for a Foots Cray Folk Day.

A theme borrowed from the Broadstairs thread and started by Wrotham Jen - it's nice not only to have good music and a happy lively atmosphere in the pub but there is also good traffic to and from the bar so if we carry on like this we should keep Mick happy

I throughly enjoyed my self and its very easy to get too from Eltham.
the outside garden is a excellent place to hold a folk gathering and I will without doubt be returning to this event next week.,

This weekly event is excellent and the pub regulars and staff are very friendly.

I like it Pierre but there's something in the mental image of us all lying on our backs with our feet kicking in the air that makes me slightly uneasy!

I am just interested to see how it pans out and perhaps suggesting that it may not be as it was. Of course, ideally we shall get both and if there is a difference in styles between the two 'camps' we shall be the richer for it.

I would suggest we meet up earlier, but we have no chance of getting everyone together until 8.30. How about I state my suggestion now.

Less emphasis on leading a jam - inclusion of "feature" spots. Different people each week, arranged in advance, and garnered from our players. We need to keep a closer eye on the time perhaps, having a final jam at 10.45. This might make for a less sudden ending. There seems to be no clock on the wall, which would help. We don't want to go too rigid with it though, and Mumblin Len prefers it just how it is.

For the moment I think I'm with Len but reserve the right to change that opinion, although not being a player I doubt I get a full vote

As it stands everyone can play almost continuously from 8.30 to 11.00, it's just that different people get to call the tune and lead off. I may be wrong but I think that the musicians all go there to play as much as they can and that any reduction in that would not go down so well. It is also very social as we do it.

I could see that if we had 20 players it might be more difficult, but as yet we haven't.

If time is the problem then perhaps we just need to start on time and if someone is not ready to take their turn, skip on to the next without hanging around. People tend to arrive for the time that they know you will start rather than the time you say you will start

Much better with Sue taking the lead whilst listening to input and suggestions from all - but making the final decisions herself! She has years of experience of running successful folk events.

Thank you Woodsie. The only Woodshed sessions I have been to were during Folk Week. They were great, and maybe Jen can tell us what they were like on regular nights. As long as people can get comfortably to the bar, and to the toilets. I hate being stuck in the midst of fiddler's elbows, box player's elbow's, gig boxes and bags under my feet. I think that sensibly, 20 to 30 people would be manageable. Any more than that, and we'll have to get Mick to empty his upstairs room.

girl friday - when the wrotham was ALL MINE (evil laugh) the woodshed sessions were daily during folk week and monthly throughout the rest of the year. they were a great success. to answer your question, the woodsheds during folk week were at capacity. one day we even had a fringe woodshed under the awning outside in the rain. not during folk week they were less predictable but we generally had 10+ musicians even on quiet nights. they were profitable to me as a landlady which is important to state since they became sustainable part of the business. the wrotham also has a decent space for sessions...not sure what the 7 stars is like - will have to come by to see!

the new landlady at the wrotham has changed the music format in general and has cancelled the woodshed throughout the year (tsk tsk), but IT IS STILL ON during folk week. bob's still running them and he has some great guests lined up for this year, i would highly recommend it. there will be a pub gig 1-2, its worth being there at 2 to save your space.

Having taken part in the Folk Week o/s session, I can tell you that not everyone was happy about it. We'll fill up the restaurant area first, then maybe spread into the main bar with Mick's permission. I don't think having a second session in the pool room would be a move.
Now, those alternative names... puts on posh Monty Pythonesque voice to say "Now this is getting extremely silly...."

We should maybe call it the Star Bar Sessions in honour of chocolate.

If any Gong Scourers are reading this.... you are our local side. Come and see us....

Jen.... you'll be very welcome..... shame the woodshed sessions have stopped.... especially as they brought money in...... she'll learn.

If the weather is warm and dry, I'm up for it, but Len might not be, as he tends to get very cold, very quickly. I don't want to risk getting a chill either before Sidmouth, so will play it by ear. Youguys are welcome to try it though. I could see that Mick was having trouble with his glass washer. The one down the road plays up all the time.
If you want a ducking stool, I bet "Auntie Wainwright" of Old Crap Antiques has got one. No promises, but in the oven now is an attempt at a bread pudding. (Loaf bought at Lidl with the texture of felt). It smells good but I may have made it too wet!

a) It doesn't come up if you search on category "acoustic music", or indeed just plain "music". It only comes up if you leave "event type" blank or "any". Editing the tags a bit to add music references should cure that.

What I like about this is session is that everybody is invited to join in / play along in a sort of jam session fashion - I like this as I can just jingle my guitar here and there (if I know the tune that is!) and not have to worry too much about being put on the spot to sing a song! It was good to see my old friend Graeham Hood again with his wonderful dulcimer playing.

A excellent night once again I throughly enjoyed it.
The bread pudding was very nice.
A wonderful mix of players and singers well done to everyone?
It was good to have the Landlord and Bar staff enjoying the event too.

It was a right Palaver having no cash point nearby and after a mile walk there and back to the nearest cash point and finding it Out of Order I was pleased to find a cash back felicity behind the bar which cheered me up .

Next week is the build up too Sidmouth so I will not be attending in order to save money but there on after I will be there each week and having a quick and reliable transport system home helps .

Once again this is a great weekly event and I advised anyone to has not attended yet to get down to the seven Stars in Footcray.

I think I've noticed people coming out of the Stars and turning left to catch the 233 to Eltham

If you turn right and go just past the traffic lights you get a choice of the 233 and the 321 which is a more direct route

I think that's not nice.... and your pint of beer is becoming a distant dream. Bread pudding don't get stale, cos there's too much fat and fruit in it. However, other suggested uses might be..... put between the strings of a violin, or stufed down the mouth of a trumpet, it'd make a good mute..... or .......?

Pete, the sad fact is that it is not good enough. Before we went there the pub was closed from 8pm on a Monday so the Landlord had no overheads.

broadstairs-jen used to run the highly successful and crowded sessions at the Wrotham Arms in Broadstairs so she knows about these things - she writes on the Broadstairs thread :-

"a plea to everyone: please remember that a full pub is not necessarily a pub making money and the sessions are notoriously weak on the takings front. please support the sessions by buying your food and drink at the venues."

The licensed trade is in free fall and within 4 miles of the Seven Stars these and more pubs have gone under -

The Birchwood
The Woodman
Deja Vu
The Red Lion
The Crayfish
The Anglesea Arms
The Blue Rose
The Greyhound
The OldStar
The Anchor and Hope
The New Moon

It is not for us to save a pub single handed but a night out for a fiver would still give change from two pints of real ale. The Seven Stars is a commercial business, not a local government facility and I think that I get very good value for my money - 2 1/2 hours of folk music with drinks - for comparison you can get one hour's belly dancing for £8, no drinks

So you see Pete, when we're knocking back the pints it's not that we are alcoholics or anything like that, it's simply that we are doing our best to keep the club going ;-) They do also offer us tea and coffee mid evening if that's more to your taste and it's a bargain at 70p

Can't see you getting dismissed Pete as one of our long standing regulars who helped keep us going through the lean times

As for the bellydancing, that's too expensive for me, you'll have to make do with my Carl Perkins rendition!

Acksherly, looking back at my records of climbing trips, in about 8 of the last 10 years the weather between about 25th Sept and 10th Oct has been very good in the southern UK...there's usually been a bit of an "Indian Summer" period of warmish, stable weather. So we may be lucky.

You've got longer to look forward to it

I doesn't clash with any events in August or September

There's still lots of time to spread the word and encourage more people to go

There should be plenty of water in the Cray for swimming, ducks etc

You can sing the odd Christmas song without it sounding too ridiculous

There's a nice warm pub beckoning if it gets too cold outside

Word is that the Leopards are hoping for four events a year which taken literally would be October, January, April, July - a fest for all seasons. I shall however be personally advising against anything for January 9th :-(

Where have I been?
Here,s What I been doing.
I have been digging a huge pond in my back Garden 5000 liters of water and a meter deep.
with pumps filters and a waterfall.
I filled it with water last Sunday night and come Monday morning the pond was empty?

"There was was still plenty of water "but most of it was in the garden next door?

I have had to take the whole lot to pieces which involved shifting half a ton of Cornish Pebbles
along with trying to preserve very expensive water plants? Thank God I decided to await a month before putting Fish in?
The Fish I already have from the previous pond of which this new pond is a extension have spent the last 5days in a Wheelie bIn?
I have solved the problem by installing a double under liner and now the pond is fine.

What a bloody Palaver.
Anyway back to the folk clubs next week starting on Monday at the Stars.

Right, I'm going to try and make it tomorrow night (Monday 9th Aug)!

I'm going to try and get the 1906 train from Tunbridge Wells arriving Orpington 1938.

Is there anyone who may be passing near Orpingtonstation around that time who could give me a lift? That's me, a guitar and possibly an octave mandolin. I may not play or sing much for a first visit, but will bring instruments to give myself an option if the mood takes me.

Don't worry if there isn't...I'll grab a cab or something. I've been saving around £60 a week in diesel for the last 6 weeks so can splash out one time if necessary!

For going back, would the 2329 from Orpington allow me to stay to the end and still catch it? There's a larter one if necessary.

we'll be delighted to have you. If you have no luck with the lift, the 51 bus goes direct from outside the station to 100 yards up from the pub - the stop is Foots Cray Post Office - that'll be just 2 quid and I'm sure would get you there easily by 8.30

The 51 would also take you back if needed but if you stay to the end you wouldn't get the 2329

Thanks RB: I can manage to get instruments onto and off trains I think, but hobbling onto and off buses with foot in aircast boot, a crutch and 2 instruments, and carrying them even 100 yards may be a problem.

If there's no-one available for a lift (I certainly don't want anyone to go out of their way...just if anyone's passing) then I'll treat myself to a cab. It'll only be the once! Next time I'll drive or be driven.

A excellent night in the pub with great singers/players I throughly enjoyed myself but I clearly have not mastered Masters of War so I will continue at it and have another go next Monday.

Unfortunately I lost my keys Monday night and I think I left them in the pub so if anyone has found them please keep hold of them untill next week.

When I got home I had to climb over a 6ft back garden gate and dig up my spare set of keys that I bury in my garden so if I lose my keys at least I have a spare pair so I can gain entry to my house.
I have never had to do it though in the dead of night half pissed crawling around untill I found them.

What a palarva. It seems that Pierre is always losing something, somewhere, but having to dig up his garden is surely the most spectacular aprez folk event ever. We are hoping to get to The Stars for lunch today, but having to wait on a delivery that hasn't arrived yet. I can phone Mick and enquire after your keys, if we don't get there, but enquiries should be made soon, before he goes on holiday. I'm assured by Mick that the managers will justlet us get on with it, so if the night next week is half as good as last night, it'll be great.

I plan to come along next Monday (16th Aug). The local cab back to Orpington station was reasonable last week, but if I can avoid a black cab from the station to the Seven Stars next week by imposing on someone for a lift, I'll keep whoever picks me up in beers or other drink of choice for the evening.

I plan on catching the train that'll get me into Orpington at 1938 but am happy to wait around if that's too early for anyone. Be bringing a guitar AND octave mandolin this time and hope to make a better fist of things than I did last time.

Thanks VERY much, that'll be brilliant.

The "Seven Stars" session is very different from the others I go to. Not so much in breadth of music, as the others cover everything from unaccompanied trad songs to relatively modern rock, too.

It's difficult to put my finger on. I can't say "more relaxed" exactly, because the other sessions are relaxed. Probably the biggest difference is the balance.

The High Brooms session always tends to have an accordian or two present, plus several concertinas, which gives a very different sound to the "joiny-in" songs. There's also more unaccompanied stuff...at least 3 people, sometimes 5, who sing unaccompanied.

The Beacon session is smaller scale...rarely more than 10 people, and with most of the guitarists being *frighteningly* accomplished. They're very encouraging, but I hate just "chord bashing" there when the others play very complex stuff. There's not much of a tradition of joining in there...the performer generally has to encourage the others to join in with choruses or instruments, otherwise it's a solo or duo effort. Mind you, with 2 or 3 duos there, you can get a chance to do 7 or 8 songs (though I usually pass on the first couple of rounds until I've drunk enough to overcome the nerves :-) )

It's definitely a session I'll try to get to semi-regularly.

The session is very relaxed and pleasant folk some whom I have know fore a while now and its always good to see them.

I dont mind folk joining in. But if wanted to do a solo slot point it out and folk will let you sing alone and play alone or both then they will shuuuuuuuuuuuuuuush .Its your slot?

I'm not bothered one way or the other about people joining in. I was just commentng above that at the Beacon session I go to it's not automatic. At High Brooms, it varies according to the song. I was expecting joining in at Seven Stars, so wasn't worried.

It sounded a little odd doing "Breakfast Blues" though, as I had 2 turnarounds I was using, one for the intro and first 2 verses, and a different one at the end. Someone to my left was playing a turnaround that sounded to "clash" a bit with mine. Didn't put me off...the combined turnarounds just sounded a bit muddled.

"Man of Kent" I simply buggered up, as I'd learned Stuart Pendrill's version and then heard Bob K do the original. The two versions were merging in my head as I played, and I kept losing the "thread". I heard Trevor suggest I'd be better "on my own" as I played, but it wasn't the joining in that messed me up, it was having 2 versions of the song in my head!!!

I must say Rob, that having the odd accordion accompaniment would be absolutely welcome at Seven Stars, as would a melodeon or fiddle player.
Quite why there are so few in our area is beyond me. The Tonbridge area is well served for traditional singers and players, and it's great. We've sung at The Beacon, and Nellies. Unfortunately all three clubs meet on a Monday.It would be great to have Singer Of Songs join us one evening.

I do not like a hard yolk - it should be nice and runny - but I like my white to be set - I hate it snotty. If it does get a bit solid - a knob of butter usually works very well.....

I tried...."Banks of the Sweet Primroses" is folk in almost anybody's book, though I cocked up a verse (again! One day I'll do a song all the way through without cocking something up). And "John Condon", though fairly recent, is folky in style, and done unaccompanied, though I wish my voice had been a bit better. I won't say anything about "Waiting For Pete Doherty To Die"!

It was a strange one tonight, with people drifting off into the other bar or outside for much longer periods than they did last week. There almost seemed to be a lack of respect from some people for what others were doing when they themselves weren't performing. Maybe more people than Raffles felt that some of the music was getting a bit far away from where it should have been.

You have to be hard, sometimes - at Blackheath (when I was running it) I banned Keyboards altogether. This was due to several factors including:

1) Space taken up - people were bringing in FULL sized keyboards/stands aand amps then proceeding to re-arrange furniture to accomodate. With little or no regard as to the seating arrangements of other musicians and the audience!

2) Loud and inappropriate (for a folk/acoustic session)
3) volume drowning out others
4) Artificial Drums/percusion
5) Other synthesised sounds/backing
6) Complaints from other club attedees
7) Complaints from pub staff

I made an announcement and explained why. People were happy at the time, as most of the keyboarders played other instruments as well. I did state that exceptions would be made in special cases and by prior arrangement only.

This worked fine for the year or so that I was MCing!

Mind you since I left that club I've heard that the keyboarders have returned!

Re the above posting from woodeneye: I have never been to Blackheath Folk Club, but I hear it has P.A. to bring the sound up above the general noise level. I suppose it's why the keyboarders thought they would turn up there. Honestly though, do they need to be mob handed?
My attitude would be the same. You can't go disrupting the furniture, and you shouldn't be playing loud synthetic music in a Folk Club situation like the Seven Stars. I hope that the action that I have taken this morning returns the session to what it was, which was always a mixture of genres, but with the emphasis on Folk. Sometimes it's hard to see where the line is. Dylan / Denver/ Ray Davis/ Woody Guthrie etc are performed in most of our local clubs, and often by the people who play at Crayside.

I went to Blackheath this evening and must admit it was one of the most enjoyable nights I have had there. A lot of good acts. There was a keyboard player but he was very tasteful and invited to join in along with some of the acts including Simon and Dave K. A performer from Scotland Ken Caird was excellent particularly with the keyboard playing along with him. There were a lot of other acts who performed solo. However, I totally agree with Girl Friday - loud synthetic music should not be invited to play in a more intimate atmosphere such as the Seven Stars.

I was some what upset last Monday in regards to be pushed out of my seat and table by a key board player who rearranges the furniture around me to suit himself blocking me in to a tight corner whwre I coulod hardly bloody move?

later on in the night he went out side and drunk my pint and replaced with a half pint.

Can I educate. If you drink some ones pint you replace it with a pint.

I hate going off on one because it upsets the athmosphere and puts folk in a sullen mood and spoils the night.

Keyboard players (not all of them) BARGE in and take over places where folk are already seated blocking them in so they cannot get to the bar the toilets or anywhere else fore that matter with out moving chairs and climbinbg about which is a right bloody Palava
I got fed up in the end and went out side. If it happens again thou8gh I will not be so tolerent.

I am delighted to report that the situation re keyboards has been resolved peacably. Ian will be the only keyboarder next Monday, and on all future Mondays, and he is totally low key.

Yeah, I could see you were squashed into that corner, and wasn't surprised when you bailed out to the terrace.

Same player caused my guitar to slide and nearly hit the floor (again...I'd already knocked it over once myself :-( ) and then nearly shoved my pint off the table and into the sound hole with his "rearrangement" of the table and seating. Again I said nowt, but it was really thoughtless. Could have had a ruined guitar quite easily.

I am glad it hasbeen solved peacefully but honestly Sue It shouldnt matter if I drank beer from a bucket you do not drink some one elses pint and then buy them half back. I did have my Tankard with me but I had left it on the table whereby I would have had to keep chriss crossing back and forth and climbing over tables to get get to it so I went to the bar and brought a pint left it outside to go to the heads and this guy was drinking it with his own half finished pint sitting next to him.

Actually we had planned a keyboard through a letter box competition :-)

When I was young and living in Lee we had never heard of Pooh sticks so we called it Quaggy boat racing, which makes me think it's lucky we hold our sessions next to the Cray because Quaggyside Folk Club is a bit of a mouthful

One way or another though the River Cray should feature in the event - any ideas?

Idea for using the Cray on Folk Day

We 'sell' people official 6" x 6" sheets of paper and give them access to origami boat instructions. They then make a boat & put their number on it in marker pen.

Before the start we could have a Concours d'Elegance

Then at the word of command they all drop their boats into the Cray on the far side of the bridge in the High Street. (we could have an ambulance standing by for those who get mown down coming back across the high street)

In the pub garden we stretch a string over the river as a finish line and one of us enters the river to catch the boats as they pass under it.

The winner gets a luxury holiday for two in the Bahamas (or whatever we can run to)

It's a singaround. Not floorspots.

Until last week we just took turns round the circle, declining if you didn't feel like it. But now have "Mr Sticky" who I understand is a former member of the Waffen SS who's been hiding under Girl Friday's bed for several decades. He hasn't changed his spots though, and controls who has the turn with all the efficiency of his fascistic background :-)

It's anything goes, too (within limits....which I think we reached briefly last week). Songs, accompanied or not, or tunes, or whatever. Folky and more contemporary.

There's been *a* young singer present at both the sessions I've attended and I'm sure everyone would be more than happy to see more younger people there. The barmaid's young, too :-)

The sessions are quite informal. We sit round and take turns at leading the tunes or songs, each person according to their ability, but unless requested by the performer we assume that everyone can join in if they wish, each person adding to the overall effect.

The age range is sadly weighted to the over 50s but we do have and welcome younger people, we also have a stated policy of encouraging and supporting people starting out. There are no guest artists, no 'stage' raised or flat, you play from where you sit, no PA

There is a wide variety of music, a capella, guitars, dulcimer, mandolin, banjo, steel guitar, bodhran, and anything else you care to bring along - except that we are acoustic and ask for our music to be 'compatible with a folk audience'. Because we have a wide variety of people we get a wide variety of styles. I believe that because of where we are situated we get a happy mixture of the Kentish and London influences

We meet and play in a bar open to the public and have no issues whatsoever with the locals, many of whom have come up to us and told us how much they enjoy the music. The pub is a large one but does not have wide open spaces, it is historic (16th century in places) and the garden (mainly paved) runs down to the River Cray which can be heard from the upper part of the garden.

It is easily accessible by bus from many parts of South-East London / North West Kent and has a large car park attached

Our biggest asset is in the warm, friendly and talented people we have been fortunate enough to attract. Please come along and find out for yourself if this is the session for you, you will get a warm welcome - bring a friend if you want. We are equally pleased to see people who simply want to listen.

We would absolutely LOVE to have a whistle or harp at our session and if you just want to fit either into someone else's tune then that's what we're all about.

I believe we have a great environment for 'improvers' you would get total encouragement

I can confirm that it's a great environment for "improvers". I've got a *lot* of improvement to do (the ability to get all the way through even one song without a major cock-up, for instance) but have felt included and encouraged at all times.

I will be there Bank Holiday Monday but I may be worse for ware and minus Guitar because I am going to see The Mishmash Band (The other side of the folk duo Bruise along with umpteen Musicians 8 altogether they are playing at the Sun in the sands Blackheath That afternoon.

I fondly remember Duck Races along the canal boats we had. It was good fun and I will enjoy the day. The best Duck won. The Ducks were aged from 5 to 105 and no one cared. We all enjoyed what they did on the canal that day. Age does not matter anymore I think.

The Seven Stars is closing for refurbishment soon. Our last Folk Session there will be on Monday July 8th. It will be a celebration rather than a wake. We have been there now for 3 years. If anyone wants to come to our last night they are welcome. We hope to be moving to the nearby Foots Cray Social Club.
