23 Jun 10 - 09:06 AM (#2933214) Subject: Musicians in East Yorkshire From: robstott Hi there, I've been learning irish bouzouki for nearly six months, having played guitar semi-professionally for over 15 years. I only mention the guitar thing so you know I'm not a complete beginner! I'm mostly interested in traditional English tunes but I've got pretty broad tastes so I'm happy to give anything a go. Having played in bands before, it feels weird playing on my own so I wondered whether there's anyone in East Yorks at a similar level to me (or an astonishingly patient virtuoso!) at any instrument who'd appreciate someone to practice with? 24 Jun 10 - 10:57 AM (#2933969) Subject: RE: Musicians in East Yorkshire From: Les from Hull The sessions in Hull are First Sunday in the Wellington Inn, Russell Street, starting about 3pm, First Monday in the Black Boy, High Street starting about 8pm, Second Tuesday in the Minerva 8pm and Third Monday in the Wellington 8pm. The Black Boy session is mainly tunes, the Wellington afternoon session is mainly songs, the other sessions are more mixed but it depends who turns up. |

The event is at the Goole Waterways Museum (it's in the East Riding these days) on July 24th and 25th and I'm sure you will meet some local musicians in the informal afternoon sessions there. |

There is some cross-over in attendance, but it mainly seems to be different people turning up on different days. At the Friday sessions, they play pretty much anything, whilst on Tuesdays, they mainly stick to tunes from a couple of session books, one of which is all stuff composed by one of the regulars, whilst the other is mainly standard session favourites. Both sessions are very welcoming to beginners. Well, they've politely put up with my ineptitude on the melodeon, with no complaints, so far. Hope to see you there soon. John |

The Tiger session on Tuesday is aimed at those who are fed up with twanging and tootling away at home and want to try playing along with other musicians but for whom a proper session is too fast and full of tunes you don't know. Singer's and Musician's nights alternating with guest nights. Check who's on at http://www.whfolk.co.uk/diary 8:30 start. Entrance fee, £1 singers nights, £7 guest nights. NOTE:- Closed thru August and Bank Holiday Mondays. At the TIGER INN, Lairgate. A Ukulele group meet on alternate Mondays ( other weeks in Hull) *** Tuesday: At the SUN INN, Flemingate, there is an open mike night 8:30 start. At the TIGER INN, Lairgate, there is a Beginners/Easy session.
