Tech: Word Doc Text Slide as JPEG?

Is there a way to get a JPEG or GIF from a text page in Word, without printing it and scanning it?

Are you trying to turn a page of text into an image of that text in question? Or are you trying to pick up an image that is embedded in a page of text in a Word document?

Is it just one page? The fastest way to do it is to select the page with the text, and do a ALT + Print Screen capture of the active window. Open a new page your image editing software, you can even do this in Paint if you don't have anything else, and do a Control + V paste into that page. Then crop out the edges of the page you don't want and save it however you want or the program will allow.

Sometimes programs like Picasa (free from Google) can go a little further. If Paint won't save it in the file-type you want(I don't remember the types it uses, but I seem to recall that they're limited and bitmaps are part of it) you might be able to save it as something else in Picasa. And some of the uploading image programs like Photobucket and Flickr now let you do some of that saving as something else.

Would it be easier to save it as a PDF?

Use MWSnap to do an exact capture of what you want. You save it as a jpeg and do what ever you want with it.
Totally free, wonderful program I have used for years.

PDF is one you can't paste into other things like you can image files. At least, not as easily.

I suspect there are quite a few ways to do this. It's what each of us is accustomed to for our particular uses. I use that technique a lot because I do screen captures and save them as smaller image files. There are programs out there like SnagIt that do the same thing, but I've never really needed them since I have all of the Photoshop stuff handy.

The simplest method I've found is to copy the image from Word and then paste it into an image editor. (In my version of Photoshop Elements, you use File | "New from Clipboard" rather than a paste; but you need to flatten the image (Alt-L, F) to save it as anything but .psd.)

The picture you get will be at a resolution that Word thought appropriate for printing, and likely will be fairly low resolution (usually 72 dpi).

You can just click on the image to select it and then Ctl-C to copy, or you can use the Alt-PrtScn to put the pic into the clipboard.

Either way, you'll likely get a 72 dpi image at the size at which you viewed it.

Word may "contain" the picture at some original resolution much better than what you see. When you copy it, you get the size you see and when you paste it you probably will get that size at 72 dpi.

If you can resize the picture in Word before you copy it, up to the limits of the image originally inserted, you may get an effectively higher resolution. If you can get it at a larger size and 72 dpi you can often resize it in your graphics program without resampling, back to some smaller size at more pixels per inch to effectively "improve" the resolution. If the image in Word "pixilates" you'll copy all the pixels available, and the pixilation will disappear when you resize back to a decent pixel density.

You also can zoom the view and use a screen capture (Alt-PrtScn), but with that method you can only get what fits on the screen. You can resize the picture in Word before you copy, so that it doesn't fit on the screen in view, and the copy should still get the whole picture if you use the click-to-select and Ctl-C (or right-click Copy).

If the original image that was inserted into Word was very high resolution and hasn't been "simplified" you may want to change the page size to enlarge it in Word, but you'll be able to see (in Word) when the picture starts to "fall apart."

Just be sure to close the Word doc without saving if you don't want your twiddling with the pic to be part of the doc.

For most purposes, the copy and paste to a decent graphics program should be good enough. The image you capture will only come undone if you try to make significantly enlarged prints, or if you project it for people sitting too close to the screen.

I believe it is possible to import a Word document into Powerpoint slide show. I don't have a copy of powerpoint on my current computer, so can't double check, but with Open Office Impress slideshow, the menu sequence goes Insert>Object>OLE Object... then brings up a selection box which allows you to add a file. Open Office is, of course free and cross-platform, and is pretty good at importing Microsoft stuff - in fact better than Microsoft "previous versions".
Once it is there it should be possible to export the slide in a variety of formats including Jpeg. - or was Importing into Powerpoint what you need?
Quack!

Simple, no need for any non-standard widows software. From the 'accessories' menu, (Start/programs/accessories) you will find a standard windows programme called 'paint'

In your Word document, select all and click copy, open Paint and click paste, and there you go. You can save in Paint as a Jpeg, Bitmap, Giff, Tiff and Png.

Like I said, there are lots of ways to do this. Redundancy is built into these systems.

I never use Paint, and whenever possible I never retrieve images that have been sent in Word files because it does something to them. Normally, if I want a slide with text or with word art, I do it in Photoshop or Illustrator. (I don't use Illustrator much because I can get a lot of things taken care of in Photoshop. And on very rare occasions, I make little word art things in the ancient Microsoft program "Photodraw." It's a relic, but it's there in case I stumble across really old images I originally processed there that I need to save as something usable. That rarely happens any more.)

Paint (as viewed by those who have Photoshop?).

Another alternative.

Depending on what version of Office you have, you might be able to use "Microsoft Office Document Image Writer." If you have it, it will show up on your list of available printers. It creates a TIF file (not JPG) that might not look bad in PPT.

Hey, I never said paint was a great programme, but the original question was looking for an easy way to convert text in a word document, not graphics, to a jpeg. As it is a standard windows programme it seems an easy solution. I wouldn't recommend paint for graphics though!

In Vista and Windows 7 there is also a Snipping Tool in Accessories which will do the job of clipping and saving an area of the screen in jpeg.

Preferred color, font?

The montage service charges a fee we cannot afford for using their text-slide feature. This is the freebie approach.

"Preferred color, font?"

for what purpose?

I am a fan of B&W for most uses, and I have hundreds of fonts I like better than the standard issue ones. (Except Georgia, which you didn't include)

Most of my browsers have Palatino Linotype installed as my default font...,..but there are SO many choices which are free.

Text slides in this context can be used for montage credits, montage titles, or-- as I prefer-- invitational/marketing points to introduce ideas.

I might "title" a previously-linked montage inviting people here, for instance, with:

Getaway
even further
and longer
with
US.

I might run a credit screen after a montage showing all the places/ways our parish worships with thanks to the photographers whose photos I used.

But specifically I am asking: which fonts folks here thought appeared well and what colors appealed rather than repelled.... what looks clearest on people's browsers, etc. ... (these slides are not quite as crisp as the paid feature's slides)... are they "OK"?

(I already know quite a bit about fonts, BTW-- I used to work in typesetting shops, before desktop publishing eclipsed the bidness.)

Well, Times Roman and Comic Sans are the clearest of those you showed..

(and I once owned a foot-treadle platen press with 3 glue rollers!)

All of the 'colors'...at least as shown, seem 'garish' to me. But maybe I'm not the one to ask about color. (And I never did like Arial bold) I would go to a color picker and find some more 'muted' colors....

So...*shrug* .. I'm sorta famous as a test case for such opinons.... they ask me what *I* like, so as to know to choose the opposite... *wry grin*

I think Bill D's "seem garish" may refer to what I observed as an over-saturation, with the font color "bleeding" into the background. Images of text copied from one graphic file and pasted to another quite often seem to bring up some "noise" in the white (background) that's hard to eliminate, and the noise in the white spaces tends to be the same color as the most saturated nearby color.

All of the fonts displayed looked okay (to me) - briefly - during the "fadeout" to the next selection at some point as the contrast reduced; but at full display density there's quite a bit of "fuzz" that closes up some of the small open spaces and makes the edges look "not crisp." (check the lowercase "a" chars in Garamond for closing of the hole in the middle, and see if you see the font color "streaking" faintly across the words?)

What I saw may depend on my display settings; but I generally get acceptable (to me) displays for a broad variety of image sources.

If I had to do this I would probably waste a couple of hours fiddling with various baffling menus. Have you noticed how so many computer programs never seem to have options for the obvious? You want to do something reasonable - like saving a piece of text as a jpeg - and the only options that seem to be available are about as relevant as inserting a crocodile into and onion! Then it turns out that all the obvious things are hidden away in sub-menus of sub-menus and are invariably 'greyed-out' when you eventually find them.

In this case I would probably end up printing out the piece of text, scanning it back in again and saving the resulting file as a jpeg. Pathetic, I know, but saves an awful lot of aggravation!
