It's definite, his flights are booked!!!!

The flight is booked! August 19 through Sept 5.

A million zillion thanks to all involved, and especially SINSULL, jacqui_c, Susan of DT, dick greenhaus and (extra special thanks to) My Guru always said for putting up with me through this process, I can be a bit hard to get a hold of sometimes (single-parenthood you know).

Got ma and pa to watch the kids and Penn State has agreed not to fire me while I'm gone.

My guru always said is officially in charge of my itinerary, so communicate with her if you'd like to participate in this traveling circus. We'll post details as they are firmed.

I am very excited to finally meet many of you, and find no coincidence to the timing of this trip at this time of my life.

THANK YOU ALL.

*************************************

So, fellow Catters - we have the bones of a good tour in place, but nothing's set in stone yet except:

Flying in to Manchester early on Friday 19th August
Flying out from Heathrow on Sunday 5th September

So, the plan is to get Max to Whitby Folk Week from Manchester where he'll do some 'couch-surfing' with Dick & Susan. We need someone to meet Max at the airport & set him on his way. A lift to Whitby would be brilliant!!

Richard & I are planning to come up to Whitby (I've never done the week) after Moira Furnace Folk Festival to join the fun. I know the Regatta is on the first weekend, so I'm hoping that a MudGather would be planned for Monday or Tuesday?

Now, we could rescue Max from Whitby and take him down South on the Wednesday or Thursday, but maybe there'll be a better offer?

Sadly I don't think that we can get Max across to Ireland during this trip, but until the jigsaw puzzle of offers is done we're open to suggestions.

What I'm sure we could do, from the discussions that have already taken place, is to try to get Max to South Wales, London & Kent to meet as many Catters as possible.

If Max is anywhere near me on Sunday 29th August we could take him for a day trip to the Barn at Towersey, so he wouldn't miss out on that!

As he'll be flying from Heathrow on Sunday 5th, we'd like to look after him at Old Keepers before he leaves. I'm hoping he'll play some blues at Lewes Saturday Folk Club on Saturday 4th as I've a gig there that night.

So, he'll start at Whitby and end up at Lewes, the tour inbetween is up to you guys! I'll be PM'ing everyone who has already shown an interest asap to see what we can do. Please PM me with any offers of transport or hospitality or if you wish to make further donations, I'll gladly accept them on Max's behalf.

Lastly, I'd like to add my thanks to Max's for all the help and contributions that have already been made. You're all Stars!!

We'd be delighted to welcome Max to the Lewes Saturday Folk Club with Hils on 4th. September. By the way, we run every Saturday in August as well.

I'm sure we can find accommodation for him in Lewes, too.

A bed and a meal always awaits in West Sussex, and transport if necessary. Max may not be in the area before the last Sunday in August but, if he is, there's the usual eclectic and excellent session - trad folk, rags, reels, airs, jazz and blues at the Bull in Ditchling on the 29th.

MGAS, tell me when he plans to be in London and I'll arrange another session at the Black Lion specifically for him. If I can and there's time, I'll make it a long one (afternoon through to evening) so we can have a good chat - one thing I realised about Steve and Anne's visit, it was lovely hearing them sing, but there wasn't enough time to chat to them and their partners.

I can't offer accommodation but I can probably do picking up from various places and driving home.

I'd PM you but I can't log in from work.

Liz, a Black Lion session would be fabulous (thanks for the thought), but the only weekend Max has free now is the Towersey weekend & I guess everyone will be going to that.... Would a Thursday evening session be possible?

Thanks Will, will bear that in mind! There may be an opportunity to meet Max in Seaford on Friday 3rd September but I won't state anything definitely till the jigsaw puzzle is done!

Les, I've PM'd 'Soldier Boy' regarding setting up a MudGather (he'd offered to look after that side of things), do you know him? Would a MudGather be possible at one of your sessions?

24 Jun 10 - 09:38 PM (#2934335)
Subject: RE: Max's Grand UK Escapade 2010
From: Soldier boy

The sessions run by Les and Maggie in The Endeavour (8-11pm Monday to Friday during The Whitby Folk Week) would be a great venue for a Mudgather with Max and I would definately endorse that because I believe that quite a few Mudcatters would be there anyway.

But because of the occasional difficulty with 'background noise' from the rest of the pub's punters I would also recommend that we seek a quieter, more intimate, venue where folk can have a proper chance to sit down with Max and have a chat and really get to know the man and perhaps for Max to sing/play and entertain us without competing with such a busy environment.

I would therefore recommend more than just one Mudgather session in Whitby to have the opportunity to meet Max (why not 2 or even 4 Gatherings depending on how long he will be in Whitby?) . Perhaps a more sedate session in the afternoon somewhere and Max to be a 'special guest' at The Friendship/Rowing Club gathering or on-board The Grand Turk sailing ship session etc.

What do you think? Any suggestions?

Let's all work very hard to make Max's 'escapade' to the UK a truly memorable visit which us grateful Mudcatters will ensure he never forgets!

Chris

Chris - don't forget that Max may want to do other things as well at Whitby. Over the years I've heard rumours that there may be one or two Concerts or Dances in the town while we are in pubs having our Folk Week...

Excellent suggestions Soldier Boy, good luck with your planning!! Perhaps you could start up a new thread for Max's Whitby MudGathers??

Having just sent PM's out to lots of interested parties I've realised that I neglected to mention that we're going away at lunchtime to the Howth, Dublin for a singing weekend & I won't be back till Monday evening. I'll be off-line & won't be able to reply till then I'm afraid.

Have a nice weekend everyone (don't get burnt), maybe you'll have it all sorted out by the time I get back *grin*

Keep up the good work!

As a steward I am already at Towersey on the Thursday... but how does the Thursday 2nd Sept at the Black Lion sound? See PM for further info. It would be convenient for me and give him a few days to sight see/present buy/wash his pants out.

If he'd like to pop into the Wail, I can take him down on the Friday and put him on a train back to London on Saturday afternoon?

There's a Festival at Ash, near Sandwich, in Kent, on Sat 28th August, at which it's likely all the usual suspects from my area will be performing, imbibing, etc.

Noon till 11pm.

If Max were to stop over with me in Snodland, near Maidstone, on the nights of 27th and 28th, he could spend the day there, and I'm sure most of the Catters in Kent would come to meet him.

Perhaps Max might like an afternoon with Whitby Scratch Morris, which has quite a few Mudcatters among their number. We do spend more time in pubs, drinking, singing and playing than we do dancing. We usually end up in the Board Inn for extensive drinking, talking, singing and playing. So that would be Monday or Wednesday afternoon, meet up at 1pm in Plough Yard, or catch us up later (East Side Market or Shambles).

Hey yeah Don...

TSO and I will be at Ash. I believe Barden of England, No Worries, Tone Deaf Leopard, Rmablin Stu and fair few others will be at Ash.

We'd offer to take in Max but for several reasons:

1. No much going on in our part of Essex especially in summer
2. TSO is back at work week prior to Ash
3. We are pretty much booked solid with activities and responsibilities between Sidmouth and end of August.

Have sent an email to MGAS ...we can offer accommodation in South Wales and evening entertainment/company/sightseeing, as well as a possible mini Mudgather with friends from Newport, Llantrisant and the Gower. Can't offer transport to and from us as things are as we're probably both occupied in working hours (at least, I hope I will be, as I need the money!).

You are quite right Geoff the Duck and Suegorgeous, I think that Max will need to build in a couple of days off during his visit to the UK so he can catch his breath and not feel overwhelmed with the intensity of the UK folk scene and the demands placed upon him.

Les from Hull, I agree with you that a session on Monday or Wednesday afternoon in the Board Inn with the Whitby Scratch Morris after they have finished dancing and with other Mudcatters would be an excellent idea. What sort of time would that be?
It's a good venue where you can have a good session without lots of background noise or interruptions and where folk can sit down with Max and have a chat and get to know him and where Max can do his own thing to entertain us all.

So, Les, can you please arrange this if that is OK and also PM "My guru always said" to confirm date/time and that you can add it to Max's itinery.

Many thanks bud.

Chris

This has probably been noticed, but 19th August is a Thursday - is Max arriving Thursday or is his plane leaving the US on Thursday? Either way, no matter, but I may be able to pick him up from the airport depending on the day and then take him up to Whitby on Saturday morning if you haven't had any better offers :-)

P.S Barb'ry :

Max is flying into Manchester airport at about 9.00am on Friday 20 August and is planning to head straight to Whitby from there. How does that fit in with you? Would you still be able to take Max up to Whitby on that day?

I understand that Max is intending to leave Whitby and travel south on 26 August and will be staying with Dick and Susan whilst in Whitby.

Max is departing the UK at lunchtime from Heathrow on Sunday 5 September so those are the dates we all need to work on - 20 August to 5 September 2010.

Do you have any more suggestions /invites /ideas for Max's Grand UK Escapade 2010?

I have offered a couple of days in London between Towersey and the Wareham Wail (31st Aug - 3rd Sept) with something at the Black Lion, possibly on the 2nd Sept, so he can have a couple of days in London chilling/sight-seeing if he wants to. I believe there is a Robert Johnson CD in the house should he start to feel homesick for the Blues...

I can help if he gets to south Wales. Anne L's (and Steve's) is a good starting point for the area. I'll research the blues venues to see if there's anything worthwhile for Max. Llantrisant have Cloudstreet on the 25th (may not be his thing). I can do a bit of running around the area for sight-seeing if required - Heritage CFoast, Gower, Big Pit Mining Museum (it's free) and St Fagans Museum of Welsh Life (if he wants culture - again it's free).

If he is coming south on the 26th, allowing for a stopover en route,

We can accommodate him over the weekend, let him choose whether to have a quiet day on Friday, or we can organise a gather in the evening, take in Ash on the 28th as suggested, and liaise with his next hosts, to either deliver him or meet and handover half way on the Sunday.

Win and I are both retired, so have no time constraints.

Thanks to all participants!!! The plan is shaping up nicely but nothing's set in stone yet so keep those ideas coming in!!

I agree Les, there will be loads of stuff going on that Max might want to do. Will there be an advance program on the webpage?? Would it be worth him getting a season ticket, or just pay for individual events? It sounds like Whitby will definitely be my cup of tea as a Trad Folkie, but will it be Max's? Perhaps there'll be some time for sightseeing, there's a steam train nearby isn't there?

Max flies on 19th, arrives on Friday 20th August, Barb'ry meeting at Manchester airport.

Saturday 21st August, Barb'ry & Andy take Max to Whitby and install him with Dick & Susan.

Fun & Games at Whitby (Gathers, scratch morris, concerts, boat trip, whatever Max wants) till Thursday 26th August, Max goes down South with MGAS & Richard, long boring trip with caravan in tow.

Friday 27th & Saturday 28th, Max to Kent for Fun & Games and Ash Festival. Hosting & transport not finalised yet but I'll catch up with people soon, promise!!!

Max back to MGAS & Richard by Saturday night or Sunday morning (bright-eyed & bushy-tailed) for day trip to Towersey Barn on Sunday 29th August, quite possibly with Micca.

Sunday tea-time, probably train from Reading to South Wales to meet with Anne Lister & stay over a couple of days.

Tuesday 31st August, probably Mudgather at Anne Lister's, then Max uplifted by Carole & Andrew for some time on the Gower peninsula.

Wednesday 1st September, possible visit to Dame Patti Smith EPNS for tea, followed by Llantrisant Folk Club.

Thursday 2nd September, Carole & Andrew will drop Max at Oxford coach for onward transport to London, being met by Micca. Sightseeing, followed by session at the Black Lion hosted by LtS.

Friday 3rd September, LtS (morning) & Micca (afternoon), probably Max train to Leatherhead to MGAS & Richard overnight.

Saturday 4th September, all off to Lewes Folk Club (with Leadfingers) sightseeing on the way, back to Old Keepers overnight.

Sunday 5th September, Leadfingers takes Max to Heathrow hopefully in time for his flight home.

It would have been fabulous if we could have arranged a side-trip over to Ireland but really, there was no time available for that. I know lots of Catters will be disappointed and I'm really sorry I couldn't squeeze in more. But I think we've got a fairly action-packed itinery sorted for him which I hope he'll enjoy. His remit was to meet as many Catters as possible and I'm wondering if we should set him up with a 'visitors book' to travel around with. That would make a good souvenir I think!!

We'll make sure he has a UK mobile phone & all the hosts will be given his contact details. I'll be in touch with everyone involved in the next week or so to gather their phone numbers etc. for his itinery sheet. We'll also try to have some back-up plans in place, just in case.

Huge thanks to all the UK Catters who have been involved in this Escapade, whether by donations, ideas & suggestions or hosting & transport offers. With your help this'll be a favbulous trip for Max!!

Love & Hugs,
Hil x

I agree with Les Hil, the 'Visitors Book' sounds like a good idea and a great momento and souvenir of his magical trip to the UK which should include email addresses and telephone numbers of all 'contacts' made during his tour. This could be a really valuable and usefull reference in the future when (hopefully) Max comes to the Uk again and could save you tons of time and effort second time around.

It would also be fantastic if Max could manage to do a " Max's diary of my UK Tour" thread on a daily basis here on Mudcat that we could all follow with great interest and get a real feel about Max and how he reacts to all the events laid on for him and his personal perspective on those events and who he has met and the impact they and the occasion made on him- a kind of bedtime review!

I really think that this could make a big difference to the 'Human Interest' of this story and make a big and lasting impact on all us UK Mudcatters who owe Max so much.
Just an idea.

And on behalf of all us UK Mudcatters Hil I just want to say what a fantastic job you are doing. Very well done chuck.

Chris

Re all the Whitby suggestions, it looks very much as though all of those (or at least most of them)are for fringe events, which is fine as many Mudcatters inhabit these. However, for instance, I know Dick and Susan certainly frequent some of the the official ones when they come over ... for instance the ballad sessions which are on every afternoon ... but there are other delights such as the evening events "In the Tradition" at the football club ... or even the talks and films at the Museum. I hope somebody will be pointing Max in their direction as well? And some Mudcatters will, I'm sure, be on the festival official bill as well. In previous years Flying Cat certainly has been with Saro ... and so on! Hope the trip goes well - it sounds like a mammoth task to have organised it MGAS!!

Have arrangements been made for a "Whitby Mudgather"? If so, it would be worth having info put into the Whitby Wailer - the official vehicle for information about festival (and other) happenings.

We always have full tickets and go to regular events all day/nite (always including the ballad sessions.). The fringe events always seemed too jammed to get in and certainly too jammed to get a seat.

Will all mudcatters at Whitby be on the boat ride? Would tha tbe a good mudgather or does it "belong" to the other organization?

The boat ride is open to everyone, with a very healthy collection of Mudcatters I would think and Max would love the experience.

Susan of DT, please don't rule out all the "fringe" events. This is where you will find the true heart of the UK folk scene in the UK and where Max will be most welcomed and made at home.

I agree about the Fringe, Soldier Boy! I doubt very much whether Richard and I will go to any programmed events while we're there, we're definitely 'Fringers' when I'm not booked. We very rarely go to events at any festival, though we usually get tickets to support the festivals.

But as many have mentioned, Max will need to check the programme to see if there are events he'd like to attend. He's going to have such a good time!!!

Glad the 'visitors book' idea has gone down well, it was a sudden thought while I was typing & the idea has grown on me *grin*

Susan, the boat ride is a fundraiser and we shouldn't really detract attention from that. Besides, there probably won't be much chance to 'meet', there'll be singing & music all the way. Also, it's limited tickets and a Gather should be inclusive. Soldier Boy will sort the 'official' MudGather and nutty's idea about the Whitby Wailer sounds like a good one!!

Subject: RE: Max's Grand UK Escapade 2010
From: Geoff the Duck

Susan - the boat trip will have a lot of singers/musicians on it. Some of them will be Mudcatters, others not. If Max was interested in going on a boat trip, it would possibly be the best one to combine music, song and sea. If he wanted to go fishing, quietly, one of the regular rod and line early morning boats would be a better bet.
As for fringe events. Many regular sessions or sings happen in pubs with limited space, or just not enough room for the number of people trying to get in. This you already know from past visits.
In some of them, its might be possible to ask the person who is running it to reserve enough space one session for some US Visitors, otherwise getting there early (before it kicks off) may work. Sometimes people move on elsewhere, and a space opens up if you are quick enough to get it before someone else spots it.
The advantage of a standalone Mudgather is that it can be organised at a time and location unlikely to be swamped by the regular fringe stuff. Of course, this year the Regatta and Folk Week clash, so in the early part of the week, the pubs are likely to be so full that there might not be room anywhere.

Les suggests spending some time with Whitby Scratch Morris. As he says, there are a few 'Catters in the scratch. I have found some Youtube clips of us, so you can be forewarned of what to expect.
Whitby Scratch - Handkies
Whitby Scratch - Sticks
Whitby Scratch - rapper
Somehow I seem to have avoided dancing in anything filmed, although I can be seen wandering randomly.
Quack!
Geoff.

Terry is right... Max has his own musical directions so might want to check things in those areas as well as meeting as many UK 'Catters as possible. I'm sorry he won't be able to loop via Scotland on his visit as I won't be down in England or Wales over that period as far as I can see and would have loved to have met him.

Have an excellent trip Max!

Quite right Terry & Richard, apart from the Gather/s at Whitby, Max will need to check the program to see what he wants to do. He might want a trip on the Steam railway, I know I would!!

Yes, it's such a shame we didn't have more time to play with to get Max to Scotland and Ireland. I'm hoping that this Escapade will persuade Max to come across the pond again & go to places he'll miss on this trip!

I can't remember if I mentioned this before but Max won't be bringing a guitar over with him, but he'll be very happy if people are able to lend him one in sessions. I've got one I could lend for after Whitby but it's a very basic Epiphone & isn't trained to the standard Max would probably need *grin* Splott Man has kindly offered one for Max to use during his trip to South Wales!! Anyway, if you're in a session with Max & you see his fingers a-twitching, maybe you could pass him something to play with, I'm sure he'd be really grateful!

Looks like Max will be staying with Don (Wysiwyg)T and John Barden will be helping out with transport too. A side trip to Orpington Friday Folk is being planned aswell as Ash Festival!!

I too need to know about his food requirements.

As to an instrument, Max will have access to my rare Framus at Orpington Friday Folk, and at Ash on the Saturday.

I will be honoured to have him play my guitar, considering what he has done for all of us. With luck, some of his blues skills may rub off on me.

What we need now, is to ensure that as many London and Essex Catters as possible make it to Orpington, and as many Kentish members (plus of course any who can of the above), make it to Ash.

Let's show Max how much we appreciate his efforts on our behalf.

Haven't had much luck finding a decent small 'visitors book' in my local shops. Nearest I can get to it is an autograph book, so I think it'll end up being a plain small blank page hard-cover unless anyone has any bright ideas....

Does anyone along Max's route have decent handwriting or do calligraphy? I was thinking of leaving the first page blank so that someone can write something 'prettily' in it.

Llantrisant Folk Club on Wednesday 1st September

Lewes Saturday Folk Club on Saturday 4th September (probably with Leadfingers)

Not to mention the Mudgather's at Steve & Anne's in South Wales on Tuesday 31st August and the session at the Black Lion, Plaistow on Thursday 2nd September.

And he'll have the loan of some very fine guitars, coutesty of Splott Man, The Barden of England and Don(Wysiwyg)T

I write a sort of exploded debased italic script. Both Hilary and Max will be at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club on Saturday 4th. September as Hilary is doing a half-booking for us; I could do some scribbling if you like. Do you need a sample of my writing? I won't be miffed if it's not considered good enough.

Allow some time for sightseeing in Lewes; we've got a Norman castle, a Georgian brewery, a Napoleonic prison, a Victorian open-air swimming pool, and the South Downs all around.

No allergies, no dislikes, I eat meat, game, veggies, et al. My favorite things are things I have not tried before and am delighted by authenticities, so I'm quite happy leaving things to the whims of my hosts, excitedly.

Not a picky sleeper or eater, don't mind pets or stock, dirt or mess, couches or floors. Although I have not interjected a whole lot in this process so far, I am a thoughtful communicator and will speak up if there is something I want or need or am troubled by. I am equally thoughtful listening to anything you want or need or are troubled by.

The only thing remotely non-standard about me is that I do not drink alcohol. Don't mind it, don't mind if others do, still very much enjoy pubs and such, just don't take it in. Tea, water, tonic is my standard, soda, juices... all good.

I am a very easy and simple man. No one needs to be worried about my happiness or comfort, for I am bringing all I need with me. I am content in doing the things that my hosts feel like I should do to get whatever experience they think would be cool for me. And yes, I am hoping this is my first trip of many, annually or biannually.

Thank you all for everything, I am looking forward to thanking you in person.

And, of course, I am planning to document my journey as thoroughly as possible and share it as widely and frequently as I can manage.

Hi folks.

Now that Max's first port of call, 'Whitby Folk Week',in the UK is only about two and a half weeks away I thought I would kind of ring-fence Max's first jaunt in the UK by starting an off-shoot thread headed

"MAX'S WHITBY FOLK WEEK MUDGATHERINGS"

So that Mudcatters going to this Whitby Festival can start to focus on this initial stage of Max's travels and collectively agree and schedule one, two or even three MudGatherings during his stay in Whitby between Sat 21 Aug and Wed 25 Aug ( Max travels south early on Thurs 26 Aug from Whitby to other venues listed on this thread).

So I am now going to create a new Whitby thread for Max and hope that my fellow Mudcatters coming to Whitby and hoping to meet Max and plan his itinery whilst there will support me in my endeavours to make his visit to Whitby very special indeed.

So please do visit the new thread and let me know your ideas and suggestions during Max's stay in Whitby.

Many thanks.

Chris

Would anyone be interested in an Escapade Tshirt if I got some sorted? They'd be basic, white, various sizes and would be £10, that would give £3 each back to MudCat funds. I might have time to sort it if there's enough interest. I'd need to decide by tomorrow really....

I would be very interested Mgas. Please put me down for one.

I would expect that many Mudcatters would like one as a momento of Max's UK tour and of meeting up with Max.

Bring em on!

I think I'll get a batch of Tshirts set up today with a variety of sizes. I'll save them for whoever PM's me with size required. If they all get reserved quickly I might be able to get a second batch done before Whitby, possibly...

If people want more than I've got then I can always order & post them afterwards perhaps. Might need to store them down in town to save lugging them to & fro Moor & Coast.

A warning....T-shirts, we've found, come in S, M, L, XL, XXL and XXXL.
stocking all the sizes runs into storage problems; making 'em available in more than one color multiplies the selection by six times the number of colors.

Ok, just ordered some Escapade t-shirts in various sizes so I hope Catters will want them (£10 each including £3 to Mudcat funds), some are already reserved. I'll be bringing a batch to Whitby, I'll have the reserved ones (we'll be in the Endeavour on Monday unless otherwise arranged) & spares will be with Bill in the craft-fair - thanks Bill!!

Am sticking to basic white ones and there's a piccie of the design on my photostream on flickr! I think it's kinda tasteful. I might make an exception for Mr Red, we'll see....

Apart from Whitby, reserved T-shirts can also be picked up at Orpington FC on 27th August (from Don(Wysiwyg)T), Towersey Barn at lunchtime on Sunday 29th August (from me) and possibly other events along Max's route. If you want one, PM me with size required and we'll work out where you can receive it.

If I run out of them I'll take orders for posting them, not sure yet if I'll need to add P&P. Or I might be able to sort another order for the South after Whitby.

Thanks for the advice Dick, I'm taking a chance that I won't end up with a cupboard-full *grin*

Reserve me one of the biggest Tshirts you can please, I can pick up at Towersey!

Confirmed yesterday = Session in the back bar Black Lion, Thursday 2nd September, a come-all-ye-and-just-do-it sort of thing kicking off at about 7.30. Pub is near the Plaistow Tube station, on the District Line. Come out of the station, turn right down the hill and keep going straight down the main road past 2 sets of traffic lights. The pub is on the left hand side of the road, almost opposite the Post Office sorting centre (big, nasty, 1950's concrete block) with a pedestrian crossing right outside it. There's parking space and several buses go past it. The pub itself is one of the oldest buildings in the area, painted white, with black trim. PM me for a phone number if you are worried about getting lost.

For those who've been to one of my sessions before - please note, this one is NOT in our usual Stables bar, but in the back bar of the main pub, door is round the side near the archway (you can also get in through the arch, keep going round to the right, first door up some steps). I'm afraid that it was built before wheelchairs were invented but if anyone needs assistance, I'm sure we can find a way!

Micca and I are working out logistics of Thursday/Friday as he has to work and I don't (whoohoo!) but I do have to make a break for the West Country before it gets too late.

Any spares will be passed to Bill Sables (for his stall in the craft fair) but will only be available to sell on Tuesday & Wednesday as we won't arrive in Whitby till Monday evening & we leave first thing on Thursday. Any spare after that will be taken to Ash, Towersey etc, etc....

It is so wonderful to see the seed I planted grow like this. Thanks to all who contributed to the trip. But when you think of the ones responsible, you should pm, or go 3-D and give a hug, to Sinsull and My Guru Always Said. They made this happen, and are responsible for all of you having the chance to finally meet and enjoy our Max.

It all started during a thread that had become infected by mean spirited freeloaders who complained that they didn't like the way Max handled the financing of this place. That peeved me no end, as I remember the days when Max slept beside the servers, and sacrificed huge parts of his young life to this place, largely because he felt the responsibility to those who used it for research, friendship, and in some cases, their only connection to a larger world. After I posted my opinions of people such as those that were carping, Max made the comment that he had never been to Europe to have the Mudgatherings that many of us did as a result of his hard work. It was off the cuff, muttered at a weak moment, but my old ears recognized it for what it was, a peek inside this remarkable friend of mine. I was determined at some point to make this happen. Unfortunately, my world fell apart with my daughter's tragic accident, my father suffering a burst Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, my Aunt dying, and my mother's stroke. Between that and trying to keep a music career going, I knew I could not do the leg work necessary to accomplish this. I called on my dear friend Sinsull and she stepped up. Later we recruited MGAS and she was (and is) magnificent. And then you all jumped in...... and here we are on the brink of this good man going to Europe. Enjoy him, my friends, he is a remarkable man and a remarkable musician, and a wonderful friend. I wish for all the world I could have made the trip with him, but that will come later.

All the best,

Mick

I agree Leadfingers, but it might all depend upon My guru always said's access to t'internet on Max's travels.

I personally think that Max should do it under the guise of " Max's Uk Tour Diary" to keep everyone informed and provide his own unique reaction and response to his Uk tour. There is no better person to do this than Max himself.
This would make this a highly personal and engaging memoire from Max to satisfy a strong interest and following from both sides of the pond.

So, over to you Max, could you do this and would you be willing to keep such a personal diary of your experience in the UK?

I think folk would love this if it is at all possible.

Just an idea.

Very best regards.

Chris

I think that's one of the best piccies I have of Richard, he DOES look happy, doesn't he! And yes, there should be a 'spot the spot' competition, the Tshirt comes complete with one of 'Dick's quirks' *grin*

As Richard mentioned, that link takes you to our photopages where there are memories of our Easter Gathers over the past few years, you're very welcome to wander around and see who you can recognise...

Thanks for the reminder Chris, I will be totally offline from this Friday (20th) while we are pottering around with the caravan to Moira and Whitby through to Thursday 26th when we get back to the Cottage with Max. Anyone that needs me will have to try my mobile 07740 348614, I'll have it switched off if I'm singing.

Regarding Max starting up another thread as a diary for his travels. I really hope he'll be able to do this, but will he find the time in his very packed Itinerary?

So, Max - if you're getting a chance to catch up with these threads before you set off (and I KNOW how busy you must be just now), please can you try to do a diary thread??

Absolutely we'll start a thread, and yes, it will be very personal. I have every intention to document the hell out of this trip. The content will be well publicized and easy to follow. We shall spare no expense of time and energy.

I'm feeling well prepared at the moment. I leave tomorrow, so time is running out. My family, friends and colleagues have been very supportive and helpful through all this, and I thank them. They also demand a memoir, so it shall be so.

I'm loving the floor spots and gigs and such. I'm walking around telling people that I'm a big star and going on tour in England and that my stage name is The King of Spain.

Though I am spotting some inside jokes that I do not get (Don), but I trust it will entertain someone and am happy to play along. I challenge you to put me in a spot that I can't handle with good humor and grace. ;)
