Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth?

24 Jun 10 - 08:18 PM (#2934311)
Subject: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth?
From: Tug the Cox

For several years Tuesday night at the Middle Bar in Sidmouth has been a Sidmouth Lifeboat benefit night. For the last three years the Exmouth Shantymen have started at the middle bar,led a breakout run ashore to other venues, raising loads of cash, and returning for the final spasm. The crew won't be there as a whole this year, so in consultation with the organiser, Mike Gibson ( Cllr) I'm trying to organise a Motley crew to do about 3/4 spots around the town to add to the coffers. Who's up for it.? Tues...meet at Middle bar for 8.00, hit a few spots ( Rosies, sailing club, ship, swan, and back to Middle bar.)

I shall be at Sidmouth although the rest of my shanty crew will not.

I would be only too pleased to help out. Will, as usual, be in the Middle Bar at 8pm on the Tuesday.

If we are not stewarding and the walk from pub to pub is not too strenuous, we might possibly join in.

Design above is free for anyone wants to use it.

Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth?
From: GUEST,noreen

hmmm. . .
I would only wear such if the 'I've sucked a ' wording was rather less conspicuous, ie only visible at close quarters.
But nice design otherwise, Tam- if Lofthouses don't mind.

See what happens when people take you seriously, Jeff!

Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth?
From: VirginiaTam

If I don't sell the design or the tshirts with the design, Lofthouses shouldn't mind at all. No one profits from their brand. And it makes free advertisement for them.

That is why I made the inverted design. So people could nip down to Staples and by the printable iron on paper for transferring designs to fabric.

I rather like the bold letters. But then I don't mind in ur face kind of statements on tshirts. Pure entertainment for me.

Thanks for the compliment.

Well, Terry. Thereby hangs a tale, the Sidmouth Lifeboat isn't RNLI, who think one isn't necessary there. Sidmouth, being independent minded manage to finance their own lifeboat without central support. I understand there's not much love lost betwen the Sidmouth Crew and local RNLI crew.

Although Sidmouth has it's own private lifeboat, I'm told the crew are trained by the RNLI. Sidmouth residents raise money for both RNLI and their own lifeboat. Personally if I am drowning off Sidmouth I don't really care which one rescues me!

Too right, Kath, that's why we'll be raising money...most people don't even know the Independent/ RNLI thing. Anyway, all welcome...there'll be lots of people still in the Middle bar, Mike G ( cllr) is hatching some wicked plans to publicise the 'home and away' crews...all for the benefit of the fund!

Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth?
From: VirginiaTam

Doon't know if any or all of these are "shanties."

I sing Odetta style versions of Run Come See Jerusalem and Heave Away Santyanno.

I wail a fair version of General Taylor, growl Johnson Girls and moan Shallow Brown. Sing Grey Funnel Line too.

I kind of know Four Old Whores of Baltimore and could be persuaded to learn it proper to do the verses if everyone joins in on the chorus.

Will there be a short rehearsal prior to the actual sing?

My suggestions for the list:

Chicken on a Raft
Blow Boys, Blow or Congo River
Drop of Nelson's Blood or Roll the Chariot Along
Haul Away Joe
Lowlands
Rolling Home
Rolling Down to Old Maui
Mingulay Boat Song
Shenandoah
The Focs'le Song or Sailor's Farewell Hymn or Tis Our Sailing Time.

Someone has to sing Whup Jamboree.

From: Tug the Cox

Probably about 3 or 4 songs per stop.Could have a rehearsal in the afternoon, but the likelihood of everyone being available twice in a day is pretty small. Most people wil know choruses...just leads need to be confident. Looking good, I'll try to make sure everyone who want's to lead gets a chance.....will negotiate with cllr about what we do at Middle bar before and after run ashore.
make yourself known GRex, either tthen or before.

having used shanties when actually afloat and getting under sail -

Let's see - there's Haul'em away and Cheerly Man I don't think have been mentioned yet - I used them for the fors'l and mains'l haliards.

Has anyone suggested Blood Red Roses?

I never needed the lifeboat, but it was always some comfort to know there were men dafter than you, who'd put out to sea to try to get you out of the fix you'd got yourself into.

I know all the verses to 'For those in peril on the sea' though.

the pack or decadry iron on transfer I bought from Staples yesterday is identical to the one I bought last year except for one thing. I'm just about to try mine: found an old plain white T-shirt, plus (probably older!) pack of Canon T-shirt transfer stuff: it has squares on it so you can line it up right, but nothing to show about setting.
As for Decadry: I opened a pack of sticky labels the other day: supposed to be 65 per sheet, and there were 21 per sheet, even tho' all the packaging and even the backing paper said 65 per sheet!

BTW, re mobility scooters: aren't there anough of these lethal weapons on the loose in Sidmouth already!!

BUT my printer is too intelligent by far (more so than me!) I told it I was doing T-shirt transfer paper so it re-mirrorised the already mirrorised image!! So I have "Cough up" on the front, the right way round, and "dekcuS I" on the back!

Had a fantastic time singing round Sidmouth and would definitely love to do it next year - great news about how much we raised!

Definitely loads of fun... but I must learn more shanties for next year.

I was going to do Santyanno and General Taylor but mine are not traditional versions I think as others sang them differently.

Great to meet mudcatters and put faces to names.

as an aside to Terry the Shanty Annas is a fabulous name for girl group shanty singers.
