There is a very odd record with five Poco songs and five New Riders of the Purple Sage songs. It's called "Take Two" and is a bit confusing, but the song "Panama Red" is done by NRPS. |

As fir senior momemets, hey Phil, it's been 40 years since the country/rock thing and there were so many band playin' that stuff that it is hard to keep them straight... I reckong you could throw The Flying Burrito Brothers, the Byrds and even the Stones into into that mix as well as many others... I particularially liked "From the Inside" LP by Poco... But they put out a flurry of albums over a short time... I think I have most of them... B~ |

Unfortunately, I didn't make it, but I think Richie Furay still lives in the Boulder area and still leads the band. Craig Fuller(Pure Prairie League), most of the Dirt Band, and several guys from Firefall also live in the area, so it's not unusual to see them appearing at local events. |

I probably went because a friend asked me to go. What I recall is that they absolutely rocked the house. Maybe they performed some mellow country rock, but I recall a full-on rock and roll band. As I was leaving, I remember an older guy in the crowd. (I was maybe 17.) He appeared, to me, to be the epitome of a stereotypical hippie, which probably impressed me. He was saying admiringly, "they put the Dead to shame." I don't know if this was typical live Poco or not, but it was great. I have their live album, Deliverin, and it's fine, but it doesn't pack the punch of that show. Of course, I probably smoked something that night. Looking at the roots of country rock in the mid to late 60s, Richie Furay has to be viewed as one of the prime innovators. The Buffalo Springfield sound in 66-67 was very eclectic, probably more so than almost any other pop group. You had the Stills rockers, the Young electric folkie stuff, and Furay's pretty straight country stuff, like Kind Woman. At that time, even Gram Parsons, erstwhile father of country rock, was still trying to get The International Submarine Band out of the harbor and into a recording contract. When he did, the sound was much more akin to Haggard, Cash, and Owens than was Furay's stuff. The Eagles were really a second-generation country-rock outfit, pulling Bernie Leadon from Parson's Burrito Bros, Meisner and later Schmitt from Poco. It is of some note that Parsons referred to the eagles, probably with some jealousy of their growing pop success, a "dry plastic fuck". Now, with the Eagles, Marshall Tucker, Pure Prairie League and others of that ilk gaining supremacy, yes indeed the Furay/Poco rollicking rock-country began to define the genre, with Gene Clark, the Byrds, New Riders and later the Texas contingent like Willie and Waylon and TVZ, following in the more traditional country footsteps of the Parsons/Burrito bunch. From there, I believe you can trace the first grouping right through to modern Nashville music, which has essentially distilled and middle-roaded the country-rock sound until it has become a mainly tepid and mainstream version of what it had been. The second grouping has spawned what we now call the Alt-country, or Americana, genre with its edge of trad, Bakersfield, and honky tonk elements. |
