Kept losing their bass guitarists to the Eagles. Great band and some great songs - the band I occasionally play with do a not too bad version of "Break Away."

Can anybody name a record that has Poco doing "Panama Red"?

There is a very odd record with five Poco songs and five New Riders of the Purple Sage songs. It's called "Take Two" and is a bit confusing, but the song "Panama Red" is done by NRPS.

Panama Red was definitely NRPS. Great album.

Loved Poco too.

Good Feeling to Know is still one of the happiest songs ever recorded. And Crazy Eyes, the tribute to Gram Parsons, one of the saddest.

Yeah, New Riders definately did "Panama Red"... Got that LP, too...

As fir senior momemets, hey Phil, it's been 40 years since the country/rock thing and there were so many band playin' that stuff that it is hard to keep them straight... I reckong you could throw The Flying Burrito Brothers, the Byrds and even the Stones into into that mix as well as many others...

I particularially liked "From the Inside" LP by Poco... But they put out a flurry of albums over a short time... I think I have most of them...

Here's a strange concert for you. I once saw Poco with King Crimson. How those two bands ended up on the same bill I'll never know.

I saw them with Bonzo Dog in 1968 at the old Boston Tea Party on Berkely street

Well they played a week ago here in Louisville Colorado at the street fair. Unfortunately, I didn't make it, but I think Richie Furay still lives in the Boulder area and still leads the band. Craig Fuller(Pure Prairie League), most of the Dirt Band, and several guys from Firefall also live in the area, so it's not unusual to see them appearing at local events.

Richie plays with Poco occasionally, especially when they are in Colorado, but he left the band long ago and Paul Cotton and Rusty Young are the leaders now.

Well, I saw Poco at a festival in Washington, D.C. in like 1974 or so but other than them don't much remember the other bands...

BTW, I guess Craig Fuller ain't singin' with Little Feat anymore???

No, Craig's not been with Feat for about 6-7 years. They have a female singer now, I think.

At one point I think it was the daughter of Deleny and Bonnie that was singing with Little Feat.

Rusty Young was an amazing pedal steel guitar player. I'm glad to hear he's still with the band. And I remember Paul Cotton from an old band called Illinois Speed Press.

I saw them a few times with the original line-up. Messina was with them, I believe... yeah, Rusty Young on the "Kind Woman" track with Buffalo Springfield.. it was natural he'd do something with Messina and Furay later.. he got kinda trippy with his steel plugged through a 'Leslie' organ box... but the mescaline musta been clean...

I saw them (Poco) once in concert - nice show. I particularly liked one of their instrumental numbers, which as I recall was called "Grand Junction".

One thing that may not be obvious is that Poco members such as Richie Furay, Randy Meisner, Rusty Young, Timothy B. Schmit (and others) are really nice guys, something that is not always the case with Rock stars.

Also, the sound that started in California in the mid 1960s is, essentially, the sound of the is our country, right up to this day. Many mainstream Country Music artists in Nashville still sound more like Poco and the Eagles than they do Hank Williams or Patsy Cline.

I saw Timothy B. Schmit in Manchester recently. He was awesome! His Expando album is my favourite album of the year so far.

By the way Poco fans might want to check out Swansea band The Storys (who, sadly, look like they're splitting up). Their three albums are chock full of harmony-laden classics.

I never listened to them, but I went to one of their concerts at the Fillmore East in (I'm guessing) the very early '70s. I probably went because a friend asked me to go. What I recall is that they absolutely rocked the house. Maybe they performed some mellow country rock, but I recall a full-on rock and roll band. As I was leaving, I remember an older guy in the crowd. (I was maybe 17.) He appeared, to me, to be the epitome of a stereotypical hippie, which probably impressed me. He was saying admiringly, "they put the Dead to shame."

I don't know if this was typical live Poco or not, but it was great. I have their live album, Deliverin, and it's fine, but it doesn't pack the punch of that show. Of course, I probably smoked something that night. That's my very positive Poco memory, and I'm sure it's a narrow slice of what they were all about.

Maybe an oversimplification, but essentially correct. Looking at the roots of country rock in the mid to late 60s, Richie Furay has to be viewed as one of the prime innovators. The Buffalo Springfield sound in 66-67 was very eclectic, probably more so than almost any other pop group. You had the Stills rockers, the Young electric folkie stuff, and Furay's pretty straight country stuff, like Kind Woman. At that time, even Gram Parsons, erstwhile father of country rock, was still trying to get The International Submarine Band out of the harbor and into a recording contract. When he did, the sound was much more akin to Haggard, Cash, and Owens than was Furay's stuff. The Eagles were really a second-generation country-rock outfit, pulling Bernie Leadon from Parson's Burrito Bros, Meisner and later Schmitt from Poco. It is of some note that Parsons referred to the
eagles, probably with some jealousy of their growing pop success, a "dry plastic fuck".
Now, with the Eagles, Marshall Tucker, Pure Prairie League and others of that ilk gaining supremacy, yes indeed the Furay/Poco rollicking rock-country began to define the genre, with Gene Clark, the Byrds, New Riders and later the Texas contingent like Willie and Waylon and TVZ, following in the more traditional country footsteps of the Parsons/Burrito bunch.
From there, I believe you can trace the first grouping right through to modern Nashville music, which has essentially distilled and middle-roaded the country-rock sound until it has become a mainly tepid and mainstream version of what it had been. The second grouping has spawned what we now call the Alt-country, or Americana, genre with its edge of trad, Bakersfield, and honky tonk elements.

We recently lost two members of Poco. Rusty Young on April 14, 2021 and Paul Cotton on August 1, 2021. Rusty/Poco is the reason I took up the banjo and later dobro. I will miss them. RIP to both.
