If Ted Williams had not spent 5 seasons in military service, he would most likely be ranked as the greatest baseball player ever. Many still think he was. |

It would be flat out mayhem and he would get the puck and slow EVERYONE down with his slow and deliberate play... he commanded that much respect... and then, suddenly, explode. He was a treasure to watch. |

He was to my mind the second greatest in NHL history, but if he had Howe's longevity he may have made #1! The Red Sox once traded a great pitcher to the Yanks, but his hitting was so powerful that the sent him to the outfield. If he had stuck around Fenway he might have made the list. I think they called him Babe something or other! |

From: Ref Ted Williams, Yaz, Clemens, Rice, and Bird were all difficult personalities when playing (and I give credit to Yaz, Bird, and Rice for eventually coming to terms with it!) The Bruins had a maniacal following in Boston that filled the Garden every game for bad teams. Bobby Orr was the savior, and complemented his talent with tremendous class as a person. He is still beloved in Boston, where he raised his kids. Russell SHOULD be revered as well, as he is every bit as gracious and classy a man, but suffers from the insular racism of the Boston fandom (not all of it, of course, but a sizable chunk.) |
