From: Charley Noble Irene- If you have a fondness for Ethiopian style food there's a highest order restaurant established in town called The Asmara. It compares favorable to many of the restaurants in Washington, DC, not to mention the ones in Addis Ababa. Then there is lobster... Cheerily, Charley Noble |
01 Jul 10 - 09:08 PM (#2938248) Subject: RE: What's on in Portland ME Oct 10th? From: Bat Goddess There's always the weekly Press Room trad session just before that date in Portsmouth, NH. Friday 4:30 - 9:00 p.m. We can always find room for more voices, instruments or just plain listeners. (That's Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon and a few other Mudcat irregulars.) Great music, good food and drink, interesting people and Portsmouth is a lovely town -- good tax-free shopping, too. Linn |

02 Jul 10 - 08:52 PM (#2938879) Subject: RE: What's on in Portland ME Oct 10th? From: Charley Noble Irene- So are you going to the Shaker Community at Sabbathday Lake or some other family of friend connection? I haven't been there for years but it is a fascinating place. Charley Noble |
03 Jul 10 - 03:01 PM (#2939251) Subject: RE: What's on in Portland ME Oct 10th? From: Irene M Charley, Yes, I am visiting the Shaker family. Having spent wonderfully peaceful days at Canterbury and Hancock, and having read Sister Frances' book about growing up Shaker, the wonder that is the Internet permitted me to get in touch a couple of years ago. I was aiming for the Fall work day, but missed! Anyhow, as Brother Arnold said, "There is always work to do", so I intend doing whatever I can to help for a couple of days. The last time I was in the area, I actually avoided going to SDL, as I didn't want to intrude. |
03 Jul 10 - 04:21 PM (#2939284) Subject: RE: What's on in Portland ME Oct 10th? From: Charley Noble For those who don't know the Shaker Community at Sabbathday Lake is the last surviving remnant of this once numerous 19th century religious sect. One of their songs that has been adopted by the folk music community is of course "A Gift to be Simple." The buildings and their furnishings are all there, a delight to the eyes. And about a dozen residents still keep up the Shaker traditions. Charley Noble |
