I recorded it and have (with Frank's permission) put it on my webspace. —BK

In 1959 and '60 I was beginning to hang out around the Gate of Horn back in those incandescent musical times. The duo of Frank and Martha seemed like a bit of a stretch, but the blend was wonderful. "Yerakina" was just great when Frank took hold of it and arranged it. Later, as as member of the Weavers, Frank and the Ronnie, Lee and Fred made a classic record of the song for Vanguard Records---a Weavers Reunion Concert I think it was. 28 Jun 10 - 09:23 PM (#2936364) Subject: RE: Studs From: Crowhugger What a wonderful trip down memory lane! 900 Miles, Woman Go Home, and Que Bonita Bandera were were all sung to me as a small child in the early '60s by my mother, and through much of my childhood. I still sing 900 Miles now and then (she taught me a different 3rd verse) but I'd forgotten all about the other two, which I'll now go sing for old time's sake. As I recall, for 900 & QBB Mom used the calypso strum she learned from a Pete Seeger guitar-learning record (da-da-da da-da-da da-da) at breakneck speed for QBB. Not long before she became ill and died, Mom and I sang together at an open stage, doing 900 miles and some other songs, me often but not always singing harmony. BK Lick, I can't thank you enough for giving me this chance to relive a special time, as well as Frank for letting the music be posted to your web site. ~CH. |

I underwent a nasty divorce subsequently. Martha was very charitable and a really nice person. I was sort of confused in those days about my priorities. I managed to get into hot water with Martha and another great singer of Jewish songs, Shoshana Damari. I accompanied them both at the Gate of Horn. One fatal day, I overbooked myself between the two singers. With Martha, I sort of alienated her by refusing to rehearse as much as she wanted and with Shoshana, because I had come from a Martha booking, I was late. I pretty much cooked my goose with both singers on that day. Martha had an actress ability and was a wonderful "chanteuse" personality. She had an ingratiating way with an audience even though she had specialized material. Shoshana was a legend in Israel. She was a Yemenite Jew who retained her musical culture which was quite unique. She was a rascal who would make sexual references on stage which inevitably made me blush. She was also a striking and not unattractive lady but very outspoken and sometimes a lot of fun. She was a friend of Danny Kaye who came into the Gate of Horn to see her. I often thought that Danny Kaye (born Kaminsky) absorbed much of the Jewish Second Avenue Musical Theater including the performances of Aaron Lebedev, the great Yiddish theater singer. Martha and Shoshana were studies in contrast. Martha was kind of "uptown" chanteuse which made our appearances at the Empire Room in Chicago's Palmer House available to the well-heeled. Shoshana, by contrast was an Edith Piaf type who brought forth a genuine folk tradition from the Yemenites. They both were marvelous performers and had devoted followers. I, on the other hand, was a urban folkie who picked banjo and geetar and sang as much as I could of the trad American songs but also loved international music. After our rift, Martha wasn't sure I added much to her act. Shoshana was completely bent out of shape. Studs was always an appreciative host on his radio program and managed I think to really capture the talented people he had on his show in a meaningful way. Again, thank you all for your interest.
