Just wondering where folks were from. Anybody else from Virginia? Is there a thread that covers this already?

BeauDangles, here is a thread entitled "Mudcat (The World): Let us know where you are."

Mudcattheworld

I don't know how many Virginians we have, but we certainly have a lot of your neighbors. --seed

That didn't work; I'm not sure why. I'll try again.

Until now, I have been under the impression that I am the only Mudcatter in Virginia. Shula grew up in SW Virginia but when last I heard from her, lived in Maryland. Am I to assume that you, BeauDangles, are from around here someplace?

Thanks for the link, Seed.

You familiar with Big Stone Gap, VA? Well, I'm not from there but out near Front Royal.

Alright Virginia Folks! I'm in(where-the-hell-is)Farmville, which is right in the center of the state. Teach at Longwood College and play in an Irish trad band

Cool! There's lots of us in here (out there)! Frank, I know where Farmville is. Spent a few years of my childhood there, and one year of my young adulthood as a freshman at Hampden-Sydney College. Sadly, neither stay was particularly happy, but that had less to do with the area and more to do with my circumstances. My family lived in Farmville for a few years when my Dad was director of the Piedmont Planning District. This was way back in 19...69? We lived in a place we called Hassels Hollow, a little brick number at the bottom of a steep hill. (The front yard was great in the winter!). My parents divorced while we were living there. I think I was six years old.

Years later I came back for my first year of college. I didn't particularly like H-S. I had a couple of good teachers, but I was clinically depressed and found most of the students there to be really stuck up. (I hope I give no offense to anyone).

Interestingly, I moved back home after that year and went to a community college to get my GPA and self-esteem back up. 1983. That was the year I discovered Celtic Music. I am convinced that if I had not found it (or it found me) I probably would have offed myself. I wasn't a very happy camper at that time in my life. I can't really put it into words very well. It was like my ship was sinking, and the music slowly patched up all of the holes. I think that is why the music is so important to me now.

Sorry to ramble on so. Just reminiscing.

Where were you Va'catters when I need you? On my way from OK to Annap's in NJ (8/10-12) I was hoping to find 'catters on the way. I came up I-81 and stayed in Manassas on 8/12. On the way back (8/15) I stayed in Woodstock. Sorry, I missed you all.

Sorry we missed you. You were up in Tim's neck of the woods but I would have found a way to connect if I had known you were passing through. So, with the hope that others may profit from this event,

LET THE WORD GO OUT AND BE SPREAD AMONG THE PEOPLE: TRAVELING 'CATTERS NEED TO PUT OUT "FEELERS" WHEN TRAVELING. WE ARE EVERYWHERE!

Muzishun,

Hey there! I have some friends down that neck of the woods. Donna Marie, a story teller. Eric, who just moved back here from abingdon. He hosted a session for a while at a bookstore down there. Whom else....oh yeah, my buddy Sophie, a pretty snazzy fiddler.

A chara, I am a singer and fiddler (not at the same time!) in Northern Va. (living in the Gainesville/Manassas area). So glad to see so many fellow Irish musicians in the great state, and sorry to have missed the ones who were passing through. If you are ever in Old Town Alexandria on a weekend, come see me play (Laura O'Kelly and the Thistle Streetband, woo hoo!) at Ireland's Own. You can email me at fiddle@celtic.com.

Beau, did you go to U.Va. perchance? Do you play a variety of instruments, including a Copeland whistle? (Just curious!!) Dia duit!

Laura,

I just got cold shivers! Do we know each other? Yes, I went to UVa, but I didn't play at the time. And, yes, I play an assortment of instruments, including my Copeland. Perhaps we met at the Monticello Brewing Co. session, though I haven't been in a while. Or could it possibly have been at the old Rising Sun Bakery session?

Drop me an E some time. My e-mail is on my mudcat page. I'd like to hear more about the scene up there. I have a few friends who live up there that I visit from time to time. I'm gonna start co,ing up to the Contra's at Glen Echo more often. It'd be nice to know about cool bands and friendly sessions.

Hi Beau and Welcome! I'm not in Virginia - a long ways from it actually, in Toronto Canada. You have just stated so beautifully what folk music means to me: "my ship was sinking, and the music patched up all the holes"!

I will remember that quote for the rest of my life. (and I'll probably steal it a few times as well!) Hope I get to meet you sometime when I'm on tour.

Rick

BeauDangles - I bet I've met you! Eric is a very good friend of mine! In fact, he designed my web site - check out sandraparker.com . . . Donna Marie and I also go way back. Did you and Eric play a Noon concert in Abingdon during the VA Highlands Festival about two years ago? If you are that Beau - you play a mean Irish flute! We'll miss Eric down here!

Nope. Sometimes I hire a band, but I've played Solo 90% of the time.

A chara,

Beau, didn't mean to frighten you! The scene up here is nice. I've lived up here all my life though, and still haven't been to Nanny O'Brien's. I know some of the Nanny-session crowd though. I have a friend who is trying to put together a session in the Fairfax area if anyone is ever interested. I've been to Glen Echo once, and almost got run over (during a Beausoliel concert). That was my first impression of contra dancing, and I will never get over it! Thought recently I went to Augusta and played/danced at the ceili there, and it wasn't so bad. (Hey, I'm still alive, right?)

Rick, what do you play? I tried to do solo stuff, but you know there ain't much you can do with just solo fiddle or sean nos singing. So it was funny to hear you say that sometimes you hire a band. I was fortunate enough to be playing at the Va. Renaissance Fair (2 hours from my house) and met up with some fine musicians who live on the same street as I do! I'd like to hear more about the "no, I don't play in a band" lifestyle!

Slainte, Laura

Laura,

Wow! A walking talking sean nos singer! How cool is that?!

Yeah, Glen Echo is kind of like Darwinian dancing: survival of the fleetest. But they have a great floor.

Sounds like you had fun at augusta. I did swannanoa dance week last summer and was gonna do irish week this year, but I spent all of my money on instruments. Sigh.... There's always next year.

Talk to you later!

P.S. to Rick: yeah, tell us about this solo gig you've got going....
