Style Invitational Week 876: Write a song parody about the oil spill. Check out The Style Invitational at the Washington Post website for rules... but I figure we ought to win this one!

Blicky!

Forgive me if I appear to be uncharacteristically curmudgeonly, but IMHO (and it is of course only an opinion, YYMV) there are some events which are just too horrendous to write songs about, and the BP disaster is one of them.

I am reminded of the Dunblane (Scotland) horror of some years ago, when a man flipped and shot many schoolchildren dead in the town school). A local songstress wrote and performed a song about the affair which I found absolutely excruciating (not the quality of the song, just the fact that it had been written at all).

Tom Paxton's brave attempt regarding 9/11 falls into the same category IMO.

And while on the subject, one thing that bugs the hell out of me is the way in which the media keep calling this ecological nightmare an "oil spill". An oil spill is what happens when a tanker engineer forgets to close the valve and losses a few hundred gallons into the sea. This is no "oil spill" this is an oil "ERUPTION" and the nightmarishly unpleasant after-effects will be with us for decades to come.

Sorry to spoil the party ...

One of Paxton's early songs was about the Holocaust - "Train for Auschwitz".

Greg Artzner of Magpie worked a BP reference into a song they performed at the recent Washington Folk Festival.

Haven't thought of a song, but came up with one for a dandy aquarium decoration...BP logo included, of course.

@Mike B--Greg and Terry's song at the Washington Folk Festival was called "Follow the Money," and I really hope they record and release it as a single. It's a brilliant song!

@Murray--Totally agree. It's not a "spill" it's a disaster of a gusher. Communities of humans, birds, amphibians, and marine mammals will not be the same in our lifetimes because of this disaster. It feels wrong to write parodies about it when there's still so much suffering from a disaster that is ongoing.

Eric Bogle also wrote a song for Dunblane "One Small Star": it does not specifically mention the disaster, and remains a song that may give hope and comfort to those who have lost someone, whether in tragic circumstances or by natural causes. (It was recently mentioned in another thread for someone who had lost his father.)
I don't find that excruciating.

There were a whole bunch of songs writen about the Napoli grounding on the Devon coast in January 2007, but there was an element of comedy there in how the wreckers moved in and the booty they took. I don't think there's much comedy about this oil eruption.

Ballads always are about terrible things, nothing else is worth writing a song about.

A parody, on the other hand, I can completely see your point. Sorry.

I also comletely agree that this is not an oil SPILL, as that to me states a finite previously-contained amount, which this certainly isn't. I had been looking for a better word than gush, and eruption is great.

Thanks, MMcL.
