Folk Music Week at Pinewoods Camp

There are still openings at Folk Music Week, the Country Dance and Song Society's program at Pinewoods Camp in the Miles Standich Forest near Plymouth, Massachusetts, July 24-July 31. This is an excellent place to share and learn traditional folk music. The staff features outstanding musicians who teach music and teach about the sources of the music. Many campers are also very knowledgeable and good musicians. This year's staff features
Alison McMorland & Geordie McIntyre: Scottish ballads, collectors & song carriers.
Bob Walser: music of the Carpenter collection, building and playing a Ugandan xylophone, and playing for (contra & square) dancing.
Carl Jones & Beverly Smith: American instrumental music and harmony singing.
Len Graham: Irish music & traditions
Michael & Carrie Kline: ballad, play party songs and coal mine songs of West Virgina.
Anni Fentiman and Dave Webber: 40 years of the English folk revival.
Pinewoods Camp is set among beautiful Pine forests with two ponds for swimming. The food is very very good. This is a friendly camp with lots of chance for learning and for participation.

As you will see under "Up to Date Availability" on the CDSS web page, there is an option to register for a partial week, from minimum 2 days for $350. up to the full week at $855. This includes the superb (and healthy!) food, room, and programs. It's an excellent chance to try out the camp and program if you can't make the full-week commitment.
Pinewoods is a wonderful location with 2 lakes with good swimming, a big dance pavilion and several smaller ones, a wooded setting with trails connecting the cabins.
There is also a Morris Intensive running concurrently for the second year, which you can participate in as much or as little as you like, and an evening dance for the whole camp with a variety of music and dance.

No, Pinewoods is on Long Pond, near Plymouth, Mass.

Look up pinewoods.org for the camp site.

I had the joy of attending Pinewoods Camp at Long Pond (Plymouth,
Mass.)several times. It is a magical place, people are welcoming and so friendly, and the music is as good as it gets. It's a wonderful place to get away from urban life for a week..

This year campers can spend a whole week with Len Graham (see other current threads!!)
as well as find time to sing with Dave & Anni or Bob Walser, etc. - there is no end to the pleasures!!

Was Pinewoods a Girl Scout camp (Camp Storrow, I think) in the early 60's? That sure would bring back musical memories for me!

Pinewoods was once a Girl Scout camp owned by Helen Storrow, but has been used for dance and song since the 1933. There is an adjoining area that was also a Guide camp later, but not sure when it ceased being thus.
When Helen Storrow died she left Pinewoods to Dick & Lily (nee Roberts) Conant, who then later divided the camp into what is now Pinewoods that is run by Pinewoods Inc. and The Conant Cottages at The Point that are available for rent.
Pinewoods Camp is only used during the summer months by those groups that make up the board of Pinewoods Inc.. eg. Country Dance and Song Society; Country Dance Society - Boston Centre; Folk Arts Center of New England; and Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, Boston Branch.

Lost my post from this morning. :-(

In prior years when I've tried to promote Folk Music Week people have complained about the cost, and scheduling a full week. This year there's the option of going for 2 or more days, so there are fewer excuses!

There are great pics at clicky.

As Tim said above, there is now a Mudcat thread about a new book by Len Graham, one of the people on staff at Folk Music Week.
In addition to the staff, there are some very exceptional singers/musicians among the "campers." I think that I heard that Caroline Paton will be there as will Lorraine & Bennet Hammond, Judy Cook, Tim, himself, and many others. I wonder whther Kim Wallace will be there this year.

Would anyone care to list others whom they know will be attending all or part of Folk Music Week next week? This could help others who are on the fence about it to decide.
