D.C. area sizzles under record high of 104 degrees

July 6, 2010 - 3:55pm

WASHINGTON - The D.C. region is roasting under record-breaking temperatures of more than 100 degrees, high humidity and heat index values of more than 105 degrees.
Tuesday marks the first time the region has hit 100 degrees in July since 1999.

A new record high of 104 degrees was measured at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport early Tuesday afternoon, according to the ABC 7 First Alert Forecast.

The previous record was 101 degrees set in 1999.

The record for July 6 is 103 degrees at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and 102 degrees at Dulles International Airport.

A heat advisory is in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday.

"It will feel like 105-plus degrees through the afternoon," says ABC 7 Meteorologist Brian van de Graaff.

"Hunker down and find a cool spot. It's going to be rough."

In addition to a heat advisory, the air quality is a Code Orange and projected to be that through Thursday. The Metropolitan Council of Governments suggests seniors, adults with respiratory problems and young children limit their time outside.

The forecast calls for the lows to drop into the mid-70s and lower 80s overnight before more hazy, hot and humid weather returns.

Temperatures on Wednesday will climb near 100, with the heat index at 105 degrees or higher. Temperatures will remain in the lower 90s for the rest of the week.

For anyone without air conditioning, area cooling centers are open. Click here for their locations.

The heat wave on the East Coast could stress utilities as people return home.

Area utilities, including BGE, are asking people to conserve energy by setting the thermostat on your air conditioner higher. For more tips on how to conserve energy, click here.

Here are some tips to stay cool in the heat:

Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing;
Wear a hat to shield yourself from the sun;
Use sunscreen;
Drink lots of water. Remember that caffeinated beverages can increase the rate of water loss in your body, increasing your risk of heat exhaustion or stroke;
Hang out in the air conditioning or shade;
Don't leave children or pets in the car.
Too much time in the hot weather can make you sick. Here's some advice from the American Red Cross:

Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Normal body temperature;
May have cool, moist, pale or flushed skin;
Heavy sweating;
Headache;
Nausea or vomiting;
Dizziness;
Exhaustion.
What to do about heat exhaustion:

Get the person out of the heat and into a cooler place.
Apply cool, wet cloths.
Give a half glass of cool water every 15 minutes.
Signs of Heat Stroke

Body temperature as high as 105 degrees;
Skin that's red and hot;
Changes in consciousness;
Rapid, weak pulse;
Rapid, shallow breathing.
What to do about heat stroke:

Help is needed fast.
Move the person to a cooler place.
Quickly cool the body.
Watch for signals of breathing problems.

Okay here in New Jersey we broke the record with a temperature of 103 today and have hit 100 for the last 3 days with more expected tomorrow...

I do not enjoy melting. Heading North on Friday, but hear the temps are about the same....

Hot enough for me???

Heck, no!!!

Only 103 today... Had to put on my sweater... I worked almost all day in it and, hey, weren't bad at all... Just wish it would rain 'cause everything is dry... Crinkly under yer feet dry... Having to move oscillators all day long from garden bed to the next...

Tomorrow, ya'll, is 'sposed to be a little warmer... Maybe not sweater weather???

Until then??? Put asnother log on the fire...

Yeh, it's hot. but here in the Southern Part of Heaven, the humidity is unusually low for this time of year, so it is tolerable as long as I stay in the shade and don't make any quick moves:^)

I spoke with my Oregon sister tonight. It is hot down there too and it is expected to be hotter tomorrow and Thursday too. She thinks that Juneau sounds a little TOO cool for her - and she isn't being complimentary. :)

I know what that's like, Tink. When I was 19 and 20 I lived in southern Michigan and we had several heat waves those two summers. I remember what it is like to be in a cool shower and having your back sweat all the while. I'll take Juneau's 60 degrees.

However, this too shall pass... This winter it will be cold. :)

Thread drift... bought this place 2001.07.01 and had to re-shingle the garage. Told my buddies we'd wait until mid-September, just before hunting season. Lined em up for 09.16. It was 36C and near 45H by 10AM. Mid-afternoon, we had to carry one lad off the roof, into the basement and throw water on him. It was by far the hottest day since I had bought the place.

It's been fairly cool out here in Seattle, but today the temperature is due to hop into the low nineties. That can get fairly uncomfortable, because with Puget Sound to the west and Lake Washington to the east, it can get rather humid around here.

Temperatures are supposed to go higher still tomorrow and over the weekend.

If this keeps up, all the moss is liable to fall off our north sides!

(Fairly comfortable here in the Bat Cave, however.)

Man, I hated it... I ran outta the mulch I been using in the azalea beds and had to drive 60 miles to Baker, Wes Ginny, with a trailer to get another load... Problem is that the P-Vine wnated to go with me which, of course, meant, air condtioning... Yuck!!!

But we got back in time for me to get in a good three hours of weeding andf mulchin' in 102 temps... Felt mighty good... Didn't want to come into this ice box of a house (72 degress)... I got heavy socks on and a long sleeeved shirt... Burrrrr!!! Maybe I'll move the computer outside fir the summer???

I mean, geeze Louise... I remember last winter... I'll take 102 or 120 any day of the week compared to 30 some inches of friggin' snow, thank you...

Put another log on the fire!!!

And on our southern (US/Mexico) border, where fences are up or under construction to block people from wading across what normally resembles sort of a dribble of spit, the Rio Grande is flooding due to heavy rains from the recent "almost a hurricane tropical depression" with a new storm beginning to organize with additional heavy rain very soon.

Several large reservoirs are at record levels, and are being forced to release massive amounts of water to protect against failure of the dams. A couple of main bridges, one carrying ~10,000 pedestrains per day AND about 10,000 vehicles has been closed and water is expected to "top the bridge" within the next couple of days. (I think its the near bridge in the picture at the link.)

One town with a population of 40,000 has been evacuated, as have several others with varied sizes reported, but multiple areas with "uncounted squaters" are also being warned and people are "walking out."

No report on "how hot it is" there but weather maps I've been seeing indicate the area has been consistently above 90F (32.2C), regularly up to 98F (37C), with occasiona excursions a bit higher.

One might guess that the humidity is "above normal."

The past two days in my own area have been at quite pleasant temperatures in the low 80F range, but the 99% relative humidity has still made outdoor work a bit stressful for old farts like me. I've been in the process of laying "patio blocks" onto barrier cloth to control the weeds in a corner that can't be mowed with my rider. (Lin thinks I'm making her a patio, but my goal is just weed control.)

It took two days to unload the pallet of blocks that I had dumped into my pick'mup, and another 4 days to lay out ~180 18 lb stones. The first two days were 92F (33.3C) and above, so the 80s the past two days actually were a bit better, despite the humidity.

John

In SE England my weather station is recording 31c today,which converts to around 86F. That seems nothing compared to what you're experiencing in the States, but it's hot enough for us Brits!! We don't tend to have domestic aircon here, only in the shops and offices so it's better to be at work or in a store. My toms are in a very hot greenhouse but have set quite nicely and it looks like a decent harvest on the way - I use a brand named Moneymaker which does not seem to mind the heat.

Yes,it's definitely getting rather hot in Oxfordshire / Buckinghamshire, ; around 88 degrees,which is rather hot for England.We are starting to see the effects of drought, and the use of hose-pipes for garden-watering has been banned in some areas, ie around Liverpool.
             The "Met Office" (our official weather service)has issued a warning regarding a "Heatwave" ; it may seem strange to you in the USA, but most European homes do not have any kind of Aircon, and in the last "heatwave" a few years back,thousands of old people in France,for example,died from Hyperthermia. I shall drink plenty of alcohol ( lowers body temperature !) and sit naked in the shower-booth (preferably with Karen ,although that might be counter-productive !).

Yeah, I must have that Lynard Skinnrd Syndrome that the you was talkin' about, Capt'n... Can't get "Sweet Home, Alabama" outta my head when I'm out there in it??? That one of the symtoms???

It got down to 23C around 5AM, with about 90RH. The sweet smell of my pine trees minded me of the times I used to spent up Kent County and I started to itch thinking of the billions of skeeters.

Hot and steamy is good in their places, but the weather? We aint used to that up here in God's country.

Well, anyway, if you like it the hotter the better you won't have a reason to mend your ways.

Still plenty hot enough for me; my browser says it's only 86 in town. I dunno about that; we don't have a reliable outdoor 'mometer right now. My wife just went out for a few minutes to pick up small branches blown down Thursday, as I said I planned to mow lawn as soon as I paid a couple of bills. She came in soaked in sweat and told me to mow later after it cools down some.

35C, 42 Humidex. Hot enough for me. Add in the overweight and out of shape factors and I would be dead without AC.

I know it's hotter elsewhere... just glad I am not there.

The last couple days, it's been right about 100o here at 2,300 feet elevation in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. Christina and I took a bit of a hike on the Tahoe Rim Trail yesterday, at 8,100 feet. It was downright chilly in places, and absolutely beautiful - lots of wildflowers, and quite a bit of snow. Skeeters were bad in places, though. Still, it's very nice to be able to be able to escape 100o heat and drive to snow in an hour.

My 95-yr-old mother-in-law lives with us, and she really suffers in this heat. We have to watch carefully so she doesn't get overheated.

You can have the rest of my hot days, Q. I am tired of this summer. Of course, I have a feeling this winter will be a long and nasty one after the great winters we have had for a couple of years. The moons are lined up that way... but it could go either way, just like this heat wave.

DC... you really did get dumped on last winter. We, in the Banana Belt of The Maritimes had the mildest and lest snowy winter I have ever seen in my 42 winters here. So, I expect we'll get back to being The Icicle Belt soon.

I am pleased to report that after a horrendous summer with 90 days above 90 (most of them hovering 96-98 with high humidity), we have now had two consecutive days where the high did NOT go above 90. It is positively nippy. AAAAaaaaaahhhhhh.

Ebbie... this is the male I feed in the winter. The pair has been staying here through the winters as she is injured and can't migrate south without her. I have great pics and videos of them. I also have one video of hundreds and hundreds of them in the trees and on the rooves in spring at dawn before they continue on. Since the pair has being staying all winter, this is where they they stop. Amazing to watch.

It is now 76 degrees in Jackson, Mississippi, and headed for a low of SIXTY-EIGHT tonight!!

Wow, that feels good. We have had a really unusually hot summer this year, like many places did, just relentless.

And to be fair, we had a delightful fall, winter, and spring where we kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, and drop it did, and hard. Let's hope summer lets go for good this next week.

Here in North Texas this summer registers as one of our hottest in record. It was in the top 10, possibly now in the top 5. Many weeks over 100o.

I left on Aug. 14 to drive my son to Tucson, so it was hot and dry the entire way, though we saw a lot of the monsoon-style rainstorms in the region and got a few drops here and there. Tucson was in the 104 - 106 range, and then I drove back had slightly cooler temps one day as I drove through overcast New Mexico and West Texas. But when I got home on Sunday, Aug 19 the weather was saving the worst here for the last. As I drove east I could feel the high heat aggravated by the humidity, making it feel like a pressure cooker, and then on Aug 20 it hit 108.

We've had most days over 100 since that day, but not so high, so comparatively speaking, 102 isn't nearly so bad as 108. This weekend it looks heavenly - I see a prediction of 90 and 92, making it seem just balmy. There is one night this weekend with a low of 60 - we haven't seen that since May.

Gnu- The local forecasters have backed off from expectations of heavy rain and moderately strong (30-45 mph) winds, so I'm not quite so much on edge. The high ozone levels and ongoing temperatures in the 98-102 F range all week make it very difficult to breathe, so that is most likely one cause for my discomfort.

As far as storms go, one good strong gust could land the whole camper in the foundation hole. The important question is, of course, "What will become of our hundreds of tomatoes and the just ripe melons? :D

The trailer is not lashed down? You'd better get the help on that right away. If you were close by, I could get some rebar and chain for you reeeal cheap.

Melons? What kinda melons?

Subject: RE: BS: Hot enough for you?
From: Stilly River Sage

Take care, maeve. You've picked enough possessions up out of that hole already without having the trailer take a header in also.

I tend to enjoy big storms, as long as they aren't so huge to be destructive.

We're fine, thanks. Melons are muskmelons (Halona) and Sugar Baby watermelon, gnu. And rebar & chain wouldn't begin to hold this camper if the right wind came along, but it's a kind thought.

I don't usually worry about storms; I feel wicked vulnerable now, living here with the gaping hellhole right next to us. All is well, and the garden is thriving to the point of jungle; full good things:

maeve... rebar and chain would do just fine. Matter of fact, if ya got any cedar down near the river, screw the rebar. Just some chain. Four turnbuckles would be nice but not really required.

If ya ain't got any cedar, well, any hardwood will do ya ten years or so.

A cousre, iffin ya only get 25mph outta the rest of the storms like ya got from Earl, no woirries.
