June Tabor also recorded a version a while back (IIRC) under a different title. Martin cites June as his original source (there is a fair bit of cross-fertilisation between their repetoires since they stopped working as a duo). G. |

His text resembles the "Johnny and Betsy" in the DT, which comes from Louise Pound's Nebraska collection, more than it does the other two versions there, but it does differ significantly. If you'd like to see the text as old Mr. Cox had it, I'll post it (all eleven verses!), but you'll have to tell me you want it. (I hate to type.) The cassette, by the way, comes with a booklet of notes on the songs and their complete texts, and is available through the Mudcat Shop. Check it out! Sandy |

If you want to see an image of the old English farm laborer (and superb traditional singer), you'll have to pay a quick visit to our Folk-Legacy web site. Try clicking here. If that doesn't work, complain to the Shop managers that they've got the wrong picture! The image they show is of Joseph Able Trivett (Folk-Legacy C-2), an old logger and farmer I recorded near Butler, Tennessee, many years ago. He had a lot of fine songs, too. He was Peter Bellamy's favorite singer, too. Every time we saw Peter in this country he would tell his audiences about our recording of Harry Cox. So, if you want to hear the source singer of many of your favorite performers, give old Harry a listen. Fine singer, although he was in his 80s when Peter Kennedy made the tapes used for this release. Some neat bawdy stuff here, too: "The Old German Musicianer," for instance. If you order this cassette direct from Folk-Legacy, be sure to include "this is a Mudcat order" in the comment line, so we can credit the 'Cat with the sale. Sandy |
