However, only about 30 or 40 are well known today. In this musical workshop Anne Price and Steve Suffet will introduce you to a few of Woody Guthrie's other 2,500+ songs. Some were recorded or published in Woody's own lifetime; others were discovered after his death. All deserve to be recognized as the gems that they are. Come prepared to learn some new old songs! He mentioned it in his own autobiography, and it was when the songs were stored at the family home in Long Island or someplace like that where the family lived while he was in an institution. I see your link to the Guthrie Archives. Did they set this up themselves, or are they working in conjunction with a university with special collections? I see the archive finding aids. It would be nice if they had a first line along with the name of the song on each. Good work, though, and it sounds like an interesting concert. It must be wonderful to poke through all of those songs, looking for the next ones to bring to light of day after decades hidden away. SRS |

It is not affiliated with any university or other institution. However, it has managed to raise the funds it needs to do a excellent job and to hire a top-notch professional staff. The current Curator is Jorge Arevao and the current Archivist is Tiffany Colannino, and both stand ready to make the WGA accessible to researchers. I should mention that the songs I do are not ones that I discovered in the WGA. Instead they are ones I learned from old songbooks, periodicals, and recordings, or from people who knew Woody. However, I have asked the previous Archivist Hillel Arnold to compare some of what I have against what is in the WGA. In many instances he found multiple versions of a particular song. Hillel, by the way, now works at the New York University Library where he spend his days archiving The Daily Worker files. --- Steve |

Marjorie started the archives as well as an organization called the Committee to Combat Huntington's Disease. Harold Leventhal gave her space in his offices. I remember visiting her office in the late 70's and she pointed out file cabinets that were filled with material. I think that was only the tip of the iceberg back then. A lot of her time was spent answering letters and allowing limited access for certain projects. I think when Nora took it over and turned it into an archive that it really became a resource - although I understand it is a very lean operation that is doing an incredible job. |

Until earlier this year, the WGA were still located in the building near Carnegie Hall where Harold Leventhal had his office. They have since moved to Mount Kisco, a suburb north of New York City, where Woody Guthrie Publications and the Woody Guthrie Foundation have their offices. You will get a chance to hear an abbreviated version of Woody Rediscovered at the Eisteddfod in November. Anne Price will be in Phoenix, AZ, but I will will do my part of the program as a festival workshop. Otherwise, you can have the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Club host us. If you don't think it is the right kind of program for a coffee house night, then maybe you can put us on as a special house concert. Since Anne and I do more than just sing the songs -- we pass around photographs and songbooks, and we encourage discussion -- we actually prefer the informality of a living room. However, we presented Woody Rediscovered at the Cranberry Coffee House in Binghamton, NY, this past March and it worked out very well with more than 40 people in attendance. The Cranberry meets in the local U-U church. We're flexible. --- Steve |

Jolly Banker & Mermaid Avenue were great! I learned many new things about Woody & his music. I particularly liked the songs Ticky Toc & Heady Down. Anne's rendition of Ingrid Bergman shocked me! ;) Maybe the song was fine & it was just my mind playing tricks on me.
