The field recordings that are our only tangible record of the era were made by ethnomusicologists who sought out the best singers in any given region. But the songs were sung by everyone in the culture, and most of them were probably no more able to carry a tune than the average performer on karaoke night. These Youtube videos are a valuable addition to the historical record. |

Neil ~~ one of a pair; the other, same subject, different pov & time of day, hangs in the same room over the fireplace in the same room {at which I point on "Up the old chimbley I did creep"]. I don't know too much of their provenance: they belong to my wife [I remarried 6 weeks ago, my darling first wife having now been dead 3 years ~~ where DOES the time go!]. To my eye, 1920s work, very post-Impressionist, in impasto style; but could perhaps be 1950s pastiches of such. Appear to be oil on canvas, but not sure these are the actual originals. Can't find K Neil on google. Hope this will tell you some of what you wish to know. Best ~Michael~ |
