Hi Michael. You might want to put a link on the thread entitled "Mudcatters on Youtube" which is already set up for the purpose.... and there are many contributors on it you might like to have a listen to. Best wishes, Mike.

A real pleasure to browse through your vids, MtheGM - that's a rare selection you've got there, sterling stuff I calls it, and fine start to the day! I see you've disabled the comments though, which not only precludes more specific praise from the likes of myself, but the more visceral commentaries from the casual passer-by which is the heart & soul of YouTube...

Reminds me just what brought me into this music in the first place. Any chance of Butter & Cheese & All any time soon???

Great domestic settings, though on Noble Sir Arthur I thought you'd picked up something spectral in the picture glass... oo-er...

Michael - nice to see you in action on the Tube. I agree with Suibhne - let the comments roll... Over the years I've had declarations of love from grannies, young men with bears saying "Woof" and wanting to be my cub - and generations of youngsters who genuinely believe that ancient blues licks in A were invented by Eric Clapton in "Change The World". All great fun and neither here nor there!

Hi Suibhne. Many thanx 4 kind comments. Yes, shall put up Butter & Cheese & All: watch this space!

Any more requests?

Some lovely songs MtheGM. Always good to see these old songs getting dusted off and posted up on internet sites for all to hear. I'll be back to listen to the rest later.

As for requests, gosh.. That's a tricky one not knowing your repertoire. But I think there are quite a few traditional songs that I've never heard anywhere, but would certainly like to hear..

Cheers Michael! Forgot about that - Ultimo Tango a Wells-Next-The-Sea??? Well, it's never made exactly clear into which pocket she rams the butter... Less said the better, eh?

We so rarely get to hear what traditional music sounded like in its original context. The field recordings that are our only tangible record of the era were made by ethnomusicologists who sought out the best singers in any given region. But the songs were sung by everyone in the culture, and most of them were probably no more able to carry a tune than the average performer on karaoke night. These Youtube videos are a valuable addition to the historical record.

I agree with MB... I am so very pleased that you have made the effort to share these. I am still listening to several, and my wife (who is the singer in the family) listened with me to "The Skillet Pot", which neither of us had ever heard...and which said a lot about many things..

Michael, I've just been enjoying Butter And Cheese And All - and lovely stuff it is too! May I be inquisitive and ask what the painting on the wall behind you is?

22 Jul 10 - 06:13 AM (#2949624)
Subject: RE: Some new Youtube vids
From: MGM·Lion

Will ~~ many thanks. The painting is a view of the Moulin Rouge on Montmartre, signed K. Neil ~~ one of a pair; the other, same subject, different pov & time of day, hangs in the same room over the fireplace in the same room {at which I point on "Up the old chimbley I did creep"]. I don't know too much of their provenance: they belong to my wife [I remarried 6 weeks ago, my darling first wife having now been dead 3 years ~~ where DOES the time go!]. To my eye, 1920s work, very post-Impressionist, in impasto style; but could perhaps be 1950s pastiches of such. Appear to be oil on canvas, but not sure these are the actual originals. Can't find K Neil on google. Hope this will tell you some of what you wish to know.

Best    ~Michael~

here is a video i posted...not on you tube (have not figured out how to do that yet) but it is on myspace and facebook. This is a contra dance at Strawberry Music Festival 2007. (me on bodhran) I handed my video camera to a guy i saw who had a camera around his neck hoping he would take pix (and return my camera)http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=&release=107550273

The band consists of members from several bands, Faux Renwah, Orange Possum Special, Belle Monroe and the Brew Glass Boys, Wild Mountain String Band and others...

Will Fly ~~ in interests of accuracy: re the paintings behind me in the vids: they are, now I come to look again, by two different artists. The one behind me in Butter & Cheese & Good Ship Lies In Harbour is indeed, as I said before, by one K Neil. The other, over chimneypiece behind me on Sweet Lovely Nancy, is however signed Burnett.

Seems a good place to mention this contribution to the virtual singaround: Sedayne : M'Ginty's Meal-an-Ale : 3rd August 2010

A rough though spirited rendering by way of season - rough sound too as the new camera seems to have an internal wax-cylinder!

Hi Michael, tubing still going strong eh?

I've referenced your singing of Fanny Blair - indeed I found it quite affecting - on my Anti-Heroine thread, here: Anti-Heroines: Fanny Blair

If you'd care too, perhaps you'd comment on what you think of the song? And in particular, the eleven year old "perjuring whore".
