20 Jul 10 - 12:25 AM (#2948061) Subject: Not hard-driving, not clawhammer From: Melissa I'm looking for banjo players to enhance somebody's horizon. What I want is some names to look up on youtube for players that are easy to listen to and easy to hear..and this seems like a good place to ask for help. Any suggestions? Thanks, M |

It's in the archives here (scroll down to show number 350) Pete. |

20 Jul 10 - 12:32 PM (#2948375) Subject: RE: Not hard-driving, not clawhammer From: Mavis Enderby Waterbound reminds me of a couple more youtubers, both who play in a very nice understated way, and both have lovely voices too... Father Keith, very nice version of Waterbound here Moosedog, my favorite is Nine Hundred Miles It's a good idea to have a trawl through Patrick Costello's blog: Tangier Sound as there are some great clips of banjo players old and new, as well as Patrick's own very good frailing lessons. Couldn't find any clips, but here's his CD. On the other hand, if you want to see some great clawhammer (including a fretless Frank Proffitt banjo), try these: Jeff Davis on fretless Jeff Davis, Pretty Polly Jeff Davis, Beulah Land Howie Bursen |

21 Jul 10 - 11:34 AM (#2949085) Subject: RE: Not hard-driving, not clawhammer From: Arkie Melissa if you are in southern Missouri or around the West Plaines area you could find some great clawhammer banjo played live. I think that Karen Kraft and Emily Dowden are still in that area. Though Emily may be in Springfield, MO now. And there is Van Colbert in Willow Springs. Here is a link to Emily on youtube. Not the best performance in my opinion, but the best recording. Emily Dowden |
