Sing-along tapes with just the tune?

I think there may have been a reference in some thread creep to someplace where a person would practise songs along with some computer-generated tune player, but what I'd really like to know is:

are there any tapes out there with just the melody of folksongs that one can practise singing along with? I've got plenty of lyrics, just not always the tune to go with them and besides it is just more fun and productive to have something to sing a long with. I really don't want one with the singing and tune, just the tune.

Thanks,

kat

Hi, Kat, I think you may be able to find what you want in karioke recordings. Here is a link to a website called Music, etc. with an online catalog. click here

Alice,

Tahnks. I will certainly give them a try. I've been reading the thread on 10 most recent songs and would like to learn some of the ones posted there. I noticed that site didn't say anything about folk, but did mention oldies, so I don't know if they've have what I am looking for, but I am sure somebody must.

Thanks, again. I'll call them tomorrow.

oooops, further searching of that website shows me that the catalog of tapes will have to be mailed to you. I used to have a catalog of karioke tapes, but I'm not sure where that book is in my library. The Music, etc. website is part of the Karioke webring, so it will lead you most likely to more information. I have a sister in Denver who used to sing in nightclubs, popular standards, and a couple of years ago she borrowed a karioke machine and made tapes for all (6) of her siblings for Christmas. It is nice to have a record of her voice. She's in her 60's and has had cancer, and tells me she doesn't have a voice any more. From her tape, though, I know she still has it.

Hay, Kat, here is the homepage list of the karioke webring site. You may find one that is more folk oriented on this list. blue clicky thang

WOW! Alice, thanks! I am sure I will find something at that site. I thought about making my own tape with what is in the DT, audio-wise, but I don't like the usually computer-generated sound of them. A few, which are just piano are okay, though.

That was really a neat thing for your sister to do. I hope she is better and recovering.

As far as spelling goes, well...most of us pronounce it with the "i" in it, don't we?:-)

Thanks a bunch. I'm off to hunt tunes...Hi, Ho the derry oh!

if you find any purely folk you'll be lucky... I just found Peter Paul and Mary in the pop section of Karaoke explosion.

I use a nifty program called soft concert which lets you download karaoke files and when you play them the lyrics appear on the screen... so theoretically you could take a laptop on stage of to a party with your repertoire and sing along with the computer.... some sound good.. some sound very computerised...

What I did was purchase a $10 cable from radio shack that plugs into the port of my souncard (the other end plugs into a any mic in jack). I recorded a tape of a bunch of the midis on my site. So I now have a couple of tapes of the midis. I play them in the car all the time and have learned lots of lyrics - very cheaply.
