BS: Alphabetical Rhyming fun

Came across a fun thing I did with my kids about 15 years ago; an attempt at writing a poem (in any form) starting each new line with the next letter of the alphabet, beginning with "a." Though it is definitely not what I would write, today,(in fact some lines are pretty bad!:-) I thought I'd post it, to get us started, and see what Mudcatters might come up with...(remember the flea, a bicycle and an orange thread?) maybe some fun...here goes:

An Attempt at Alphabetical Rhyme ca 1995

And, once again, we start our story
By the side of the brook in the woods.
Carefully chosen, our words do speak of
Dragons and knights and deeds of good.
Even though they're just a thought,
Far away in a land of yore, with
Galloping steeds and valleys wide,
High mountains with peaks of myth,
In our minds, we're there already
Just 'round the bend and over the hill.
Keen winds rustle through the brush of
Ladyslipper blossoms and bluebonnets, until
Moist winds rush and howl into the
Night of darkening clouds and stars' dim lights.
Open our eyes next morning and see a
Path of shining stones leading to the heights.
Quicksilver glints along the way
Reminding us of where we dare not tread.
Soothsayers were the ones who say
Threnody cry at those who linger,
Until within their clutches fall.
Vile stench foretells of death's foul bringer.
While enchanted champions struggle awake, the
Xiphopagus, with terrible visage, descends,
Yowls when taken by sword unto its death.
Zephyr clears away the dream; AWAKE!

(In fact, the more I read it, the more I think I had BETTER come up with something lots better. So, come on and join me in the challenge, eh?**bg**)

I thought you meant like this

The Siege of Belgrade

AN Austrian army, awfully arrayed,
Boldly by battery besieged Belgrade.
Cossack commanders cannonading come,
Dealing destruction's devastating doom.
Every endeavor engineers essay,
For fame, for fortune fighting - furious fray!
Generals 'gainst generals grapple - gracious God!
How honors Heaven heroic hardihood!
Infuriate, indiscrminate in ill,
Kindred kill kinsmen, kinsmen kindred kill.
Labor low levels longest, lofiest lines;
Men march 'mid mounds, 'mid moles, ' mid murderous mines;
Now noxious, noisey numbers nothing, naught
Of outward obstacles, opposing ought;
Poor patriots, partly purchased, partly pressed,
Quite quaking, quickly "Quarter! Quarter!" quest.
Reason returns, religious right redounds,
Suwarrow stops such sanguinary sounds.
Truce to thee, Turkey! Triumph to thy train,
Unwise, unjust, unmerciful Ukraine!
Vanish vain victory! vanish, victory vain!
Why wish we warfare? Wherefore welcome were
Xerxes, Ximenes, Xanthus, Xavier?
Yield, yield, ye youths! ye yeomen, yield your yell!
Zeus', Zarpater's, Zoroaster's zeal,
Attracting all, arms against acts appeal!

A great nuncle of mine wrote a perfectly awful poem for his deceased wife, that was not just an acrostic, but every line contained multiple words that started with that letter. I remember bits of the last line about a zomething zephyr zafting his beloved wife (for whom he had a "z" word, maybe two) Zionwards. Or something. He was very proud of it, the poor dear.

Arctic wind cut through the animal's fur coat as a
Badger crept across a sagging front porch trying to escape the
Cyclone's blast. Once again nature's
Drama was playing out in the
Eccentric weather of this strange midwestern summer. A crotchety voice inside the cabin croaked,
"Fork me over another one of them steaks, would ya?"
"Gladly, hubby" whined another, "but you done et the last one already." Then followed a
Hiccup and a delicate "ahem."
Insightful providence had led the old wife to stock the larder with
Jelly and jam against the eventual winter, but meat was harder to come by. The old man had
Killed and skinned a skinny squirrel the day before, but that was all. It was the season to be sipping
Limeade on the front porch and complaining about the heat, but two weeks ago a
Monstrosity of a cold front had moved in quickly from Canada, and the
Numbers on the thermometer hadn't registered above 20 degrees Fahrenheit since Tuesday.
Orchids out in the greenhouse wore a rime of frost, and the only
Pleasant place to be was hunkered down in front of the fireplace.
Quiet scuttling could be heard in the silence between gusts of wind as mice nestled into the
Rhomboid spaces in the rafters.
Sticky pine sap dripped to the floor from the not-yet-cured wood the old man had stacked in a
Teetering pile in the corner. His wife was
Understandably skeptical of how they would survive this strange weather. Just then the man took a
Violin from the wall. He wiped the squirrel grease from his
Whiskered face and put the fiddle to his chin. In the lilting melody that followed, his wife forgot his
Xanthic skin and the worry that clouded her own brow. A feeling of peace and love, reminiscent of
Yesteryear and long ago courting days, replaced the numbing cold. "Geezer," whispered the wife,
"Zanzibar would be warmer, but I would rather be cold with you, than warm anywhere else."

Delightful, Eiseley!

Micca, I knew you'd be in early with something!:-)

Hmmm gnu...now I know I consulted a dictionary before using that word and it was some terrible monster type, but danged if I can find anything but "conjoined twins" for a def. on the dang-blasted internet. Heckifiknow!:-)

Ah! From Wictionary: Xiphopagus seems to have been a monster, with two bodies, in Greek mythology. Good to know I haven't lost me mind!LOL!

acrostic AND alliterative..that would be a challenge...great fun, mousethief!

Thanks, folks,

kat

Done, of course, as an alexandrine. An alliterative, acrostic, alexandrine associating acts affecting alewives. Yowzer!

Abask we walked beneath the trees,
Balaniferous all of these.
Calefacient our conversation,
Dapatical was our libation.
Exuviate our clothing there,
Fissility now would be rare.
Gaucherie soon changes things
Hamartia, my remark brings.
Inimical her manner now,
Joss just overtakes somehow.
Kanotophobia rears its head,
Lachrymogenic things are said.
Mesalliance will never be,
Nyctophobia, overtakes me.
Opthalmophobia I will know, if
Paracoita decides to go.
Quatorzain stops here you know!!!
Renascence needed to carry on,
Scaturient feelings all but gone.
Tabefaction must ensue,
Utinam to be with you.
Vagient now at my loss,
Wyrd the reason for my cost.
Xesturgy needed for my life,
Yataghan could end the strife.
Zounds!!!!!

A night with sails soft
Billowing crisp white aloft
Cradles my boat upon sea
Dark, stars winking at me
Every roll of the prow
Gently rocking me now
Feathery dreaming the words
Harks a sound of sea birds
Impress on the flight
Journeying after the light
Keeping time with sun
Long after day's done
Mollymauk in its season
Never minding the reason
Open wings, soar, then dive
Pelagic mystery jive,
Quilled evolving dance
Rest I now in this trance
Sleep not until dawn
Taunt the night now falln
Undressed gypsy moon
Vaulting too soon
Without the dark sky
Xemes wail and fly
Yawning I must recline
Zeal to know night now decline

a cleaner ending

Without a dark sky
Xemes wail and they fly
Yawning now I resign
Zeal for night to decline

Well, it may not be pretty, but I did it.
Maybe I cheated under the U:)

As oil wells spew deep from below
BP, it capped the news
Cloudy plumes dispersing lives
Depressing songs of blues

Environmental threats, lives on hold
Free-flowing, with no control
Games of cat-and-mouse abound
"He's" in charge, we're told

Is there a date, when it will end?
Just tell me that it's so
Knowing this will sign relief
Louisiana needs to know

Massive spills of oil and tears
No end in sight is seen
Obama came to catch a glimpse
Photo opportunity time, it seems

Questions asked, remain that way
Residents lost their hopes
Seabirds and sealife fouled in oil
The shrimpers onshore in boats

(USA, wake up, oil's not your God!)

While some look east, to notch a blame
Xenophobia's not for me
You see, innocence is now lost
zero tolerence is the new game, BP
