26 Jul 10 - 01:56 PM (#2952600) Subject: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: Morticia It's that time again folks, where I gently remind you that you need to be ordering your tickets to the Folk Event of the Year, with the best singing, the most beautiful women, the handsomest men, the most succulent pig and multiple and priceless prizes. Okay, I might have lied about the prizes but come anyway, it's great and ( not for the faint-hearted) will feature the debut appearance of the Shanty Annas - (except for the first debut in London some weeks ago for Suffet.......but this is the first proper debut, honest). Wareham Wail |

31 Aug 10 - 10:10 AM (#2976653) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: JennyO YES! At long last I'm a UK resident, and Rob (quantock) and I will be there with bells on! We got lucky and found the last room in a B & B not too far away, and we'll be coming down from Aberdeen on Friday evening for the weekend, then hanging around the south for Bromyard the next weekend. So we'll finally get to meet all the lovely people we have only met online so far, as well as the ones we have met before. It sounds like a wonderful weekend, and we're especially looking forward to the feast. One question - how cold does it get? Do we need to bring a lot of warm clothes? |
31 Aug 10 - 10:22 AM (#2976662) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: Terry McDonald The BBC website forecast for the Bournemouth area is a nighttime minumum of 15 degrees (Friday and Saturday nights.) |
31 Aug 10 - 10:52 AM (#2976688) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: Crane Driver Cold by comparison with Scotland or with Australia? See you there Andrew & Carole |
31 Aug 10 - 11:05 AM (#2976694) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: JennyO Well, probably by comparison with Australia. I think Scotland is much colder. That 15 degrees forecast minimum is more like our maximum now. Last night it was 7 degrees here. A 15 degree minimum sounds positively balmy by comparison! However, not having been to the Wail before, I guess what I really need to know is, are we outdoors most of the time? Everything is in marquees or outdoors, as far as I can see, so just wondering how warm it is in the marquees. |
31 Aug 10 - 01:07 PM (#2976775) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: Liz the Squeak Bring lots of clothes, you can always take them off if you're too hot, but putting on layers you don't have is difficult! I seem to have asked 3 people to get me a ticket so there should be at least one waiting for me.... we'll be getting there early evening hopefully, save us a big spot for the tent, in the middle! LTS |
31 Aug 10 - 02:36 PM (#2976844) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: Herga Kitty Jenny - what Liz said, and it depends what you're thinking of wearing for the mediaeval banquet. But (especially if you're not camping) you shouldn't get very cold this weekend. Not like Bromyard.... (if it's sunny during the day it's cold at night and if it isn't sunny during the day it's wet....) This Wail is sounding really great, what with Ducks and Williams virgins coming along this year! Kitty |

Yes, we're planning on doing a marathon drive to bring Max to the Wail on Saturday, but we're hoping not to disturb the proceedings too much. It will only be for a couple of hours, but it will surely be quality time. I'll bring a Mudcat Register for us to sign, Max is keeping them as souvenirs of his trip. Safe journeys all! |

From: Hawker Lovely weekend, as always, my favourite of the year and already looking forward to next year, and for all those who moan about unaccompanied singing, the organiser Alan White wishes it to be known that though there is predominantly unaccompanied singing most of the time, he has never said that musical instruments to accompany the singing were unwelcome, and indeed there were a few in atendance, as usual. It was also a great thrill to meet my first ever santee, Jenny O, her lovely man, Rob and Max too. Now, I've got a loads of photos to sort! will post them when I get myself sorted! Cheers, Lucy |

07 Sep 10 - 06:05 AM (#2981443) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: Herga Kitty Liz - I think the international debut of the Shanty Annas was a significant component of the array of talent described by Psychomorris, wasn't it? Kitty |
07 Sep 10 - 06:19 AM (#2981453) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: GUEST,Peter Jones (Manchester) I've not posted here before, but I feel a need to. This was my first 'Wail' and whilst there was some undoubtedly fine singing, I found the cliquey behaviour (of some) quite distasteful. I'll leave it at that. |
07 Sep 10 - 04:45 PM (#2981790) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: Herga Kitty Peter Jones I guess most festivals have cliques of people who've been before, or who came as a group, but we tried to make sure that no-one was left out of the singing at the singarounds, or without a group of people to sit and sing with at the banquet, especially people who hadn't been to a Wail before. I'm sorry if we failed to clock you as a Wail virgin, and make sure you were looked after. Kitty |
07 Sep 10 - 06:02 PM (#2981839) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: Morticia I'm so sorry to hear that Peter, especially as we do try very hard to make newcomers welcome and I know there are others who would report we succeeded. Of course there is the inevitable catching up with old friends and news from the year, a lot of us DO know one another well and I make no apology for that but, as I say, we all try hard to make people welcome and I am really sorry we somehow missed you. |
08 Sep 10 - 06:39 AM (#2982206) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: Tug the Cox Liz, no-one could possibly be so cruel as to be to rude to six women who had lost their virginity in public...especially as most people just looked on scoffing cream scones! |
08 Sep 10 - 06:43 AM (#2982207) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: GUEST,OldNicKilby Well of course people will know each other ,it is a Southern event and folks tend to stay in the south ,but not entirely. This is the sweetest event it is so friendly and welcoming , come again next year and you will know people, we have passed on songs and swapped tunes with several people since we came back home. This is what OUR music is about, events like this. Well done Alan and his merry band. I hope that the Marrow buyers are enjoying them |
08 Sep 10 - 06:53 AM (#2982213) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: maeve I'd love to join you someday. I understand the challenge of feeling welcome in an established group, so I'd want to tug on someone's figurative sleeve for help in becoming acquainted. Judging from what I know about several of the Mudcat participants, I'd expect no shortage of friendly welcomes. Maeve |
08 Sep 10 - 02:16 PM (#2982511) Subject: RE: Wareham Wail 2010, any takers? From: Old Vermin Interesting tension between 'cliquey' and 'tight-knit'. Sub-groups seem to evolve inside larger groups. Probably a dissertation on it somewhere. |
