It appears that as I am a member of IMRO, I have to notify IMRO to collect from PRS.
If the following songs are performed at Festivals[not on an amateur basis]would it be possible to periodically e mail me[with details] so that I can chase royalties, I am not concerned about folk clubs.
Battle of Bosworth Field, JackTheLad, Sailortown,Home to the Haven,Farewell To The Humber and Dogger,Fisher lads of Donegal,Around The Harbour Town,Farewell my Friends, Bantry Bay Song,The Sailors Dream,Sweetheart of The East, Swaffham Tinker,Pakefield Parson, the Curse of Hoxne Bridge. Dick-

Good luck on the chase!

It's amazing how quickly a composed song or a poem that one has adapted for singing becomes something that other people feel they can commercially sing or record without even credit to the artist, let alone royalties.

Not every singer does that. Some do take the time to track down the artist (not always easy) and ask for permission to sing or record the song, and offer to pay royalties and send a copy of the recording. My group Roll & Go just sent out checks and CDs to eight folk artists who either composed songs we have just recorded on our new CD titled Look Out! or who had done major work rearranging a traditional song. It's a major expense but it's the right thing to do.

It's interesting to reflect that had the songwriters & makers of yore had the capacity to be so savvy regarding copyright & royalties, there would have been no Folk Process, much less Traditional Songs to plunder to our heart's content today. But in a context of Oral Transmission where the only recording equipment available was the Human Brain, things invariably went astray rather, as the collected evidence would suggest, though just how random any of this was I wpouldn't like to say - in fact I would, because I don't think it was any more random than what goes on in Popular & Traditional Idioms today.

Sorry about this, just someone was bleating on recently about how songwriters are writing the folk songs of tomorrow, which struck me as a tad witless given that as far as Living Process is concerned your Idiomatic Folk Song is as dead as the fecking Dodo despite the best efforts of The Revival which remains a world unto itself...

Folk - Process or Genre? You decide!

Anyway, keep up the sterling work, Dick - and hopefully we'll be seeing Charley at The Steamer in Fleetwood in a month or two - or is it three? Ron was on about it the other day but I forget when he said it was...

Where can I buy this 'Human Brain'?

Is it different to the human brain?

Indeed I will be holding forth at the Steamer in Fleetwood, Thursday evening, September 9th, I believe, and the whole world is invited! I'm looking forward to leading one of Ron's songs that he asked me to set to music, "The Clan Alpine."

And I'll do my best to track down Dick as well and see if I can persuade him to sing "Sailortown" one more time.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
