BS: BS is Myspace Obsolete?

Rather than copycat with a lame joke, I thought I might just take the concept seriously. I got to thinking about things that might actually be obsolete and Myspace came to mind immediately.

I have a Myspace music page but no one visits anymore. For the past couple of years all I have seen is musicians promoting their music to other musicians who in turn promote their music. Many of them have switched to Karaoke. When the biggest thing on a former social media website is Karaoke, then I think it is probably obsolete. What you y'all think?

I run a folk club & find it useful. I can check out someone's music, something I can't do if they've only got a facebook account - I'm not on facebook & never will be.

I shut mine down for security reasons. Much of what I see is the same as you in this regard. It is a good social site for listening to other musicians music and trading comments .. I also think it is far safer than facebook but that ain't saying much.

I always look for a myspace link when I want to hear a new-to-me musician's stuff. Helps me decide if I want to buy their CD or not. I've found some great stuff on there.

it is a good place to post audio and video and journal/blog info. I use my space to archive these but facebook is a better way to connect with others to chat.

I still have a ShoreGrass page on myspace but don't use it anymore. When I realized that any songs I put up online can be copied by anyone who knows how to record from an audio stream, I took all our music off the site. It's not interactive enough for me, so I use Facebook for connections with other musicians and the world at large.

There are ways to put music up on Facebook, but haven't much looked into it for the reasons I took our music off myspace. Our "official" ShoreGrass Website points people to CDBaby, where samples of all our recorded music is available.

So yes, I think Myspace is obsolete, although it is making a valiant effort to reinvent itself and might just succeed with enough new ideas.

Personally I enjoy Myspace. We have a music festival and my wife is on the committee that lines up performers. She uses it often for preliminary screen. Often someone on Myspace will have a real good band backing them up and what you hear isn't always what you get.   Youtube is a bit more helpful and when possible we try to go see performers in person.   I have noticed the same thing with my own Myspace though and do not get many hits anymore unless I mention a new song to some of my friends usually on Facebook or via Email.

How do I get to your Myspace "Jack the Sailor" would be glad to give it a listen.

What's Myspace? Some sort of Astronomy magazine?

It seems that the answer is for most people yes, but not for musicians.
