03 Aug 10 - 10:57 AM (#2957329) Subject: Magical musical moment From: mauvepink I was just driving home from work when the most fortuitous piece of musical magic happened me since 1993. Granted it involves classical music music but it did get me thinking if any Catters have had anything similar happen them? Todays occurence was as I joined the Motorway to get home. I was listening to BBC Radio 3. Dvorak's Symphony No 9 "New World" was getting into its second movement and, just as the Cor Anglais rang up the immortal piece commonly known as "Going Home" in the UK*, I came up behind a Hovis bread lorry and overtook it! What timing * Many years ago there used to be several Hovis Bread adverts on UK TV which had "Going Home" being played in the backgrond and which made that movement of Dvorak's 9th very famous here. Hovis trucks are now not that common so this was really an usual occurrence today. My happening in September 1993 was around 5.30AM. I had had an abyssmal night on the ward and got a very late break. I nipped out in my car to park up a short way away and watch the sun rise. I remember it vividly as it was the 1st anniversary of Classic FM's launch and they started out around 6AM with "Morning" from Peer Gynt. The sun was just rising over the local hills and as it his the glade near where I was parked, the cows started risng up on their legs, as they had been lay down in the field. Two calves went acros to their Mum just at the music started, and suckled on her, as the sun peeked over the hills. Truly magical to be surrounded by this and, within 10 minutes, the mist was all around us, giving a surreal aspect on the whole scene. I was back on the ward by 6.30AM, ready to get up my 36 patients... relaxed and at peace with the world. Do you recall anything happening that was really well timed to the muisc you had on at that moment? mp |

Not a great turnout, but as I was closing the show with Utah's I REMEMBER LOVING YOU you could hear the whistle of a freight train on the tracks a block away from the theater. Perfect timing, just as I was singing the line, "as we huddled in a boxcar in the rain..". When I lived in Wichita Kansas in the late '70s', the local venue, The Forum, was located in an old bank building. It was a miniature copy of the Flatiron Building in NYC, right next to the RR tracks, and the stage was at the wide end of the room. If you knew the Amtrak schedule you could be singing "Let the Midnight Special shine it's everloving light on me" as the southbound Southwest Chief went rolling through, with its headlight illuminating your performance. Rachmaninoff piano concerto 2 when I was driving through Rocky Mountain National Park .. I swear it was a out of body experience. It was performed on a CD that one of my College friends in the Music Dept recorded for me. Given the setting and the music .. It was something special for sure |

I sat in a queue of traffic, eventually wanting to pee so badly it hurt...... I had Radio 4 on at the time... and they put on a wonderful song which brought back a lot of memories but was also (Almost) apt to my then current situation..... The song... "I can't keep it in" by Cat Stevens. PS I did make it to the next services..... only just!!!! |

It was late in the year and by the time I set out it was dark, the sky was clear and the moon was shining. From Dorchester I walked down the hill into the river valley and as I descended I could see there was a ground mist rising just six feet or so, above which it was perfectly clear with the tops of the trees floating in the sea of mist. There was little or no traffic on the road and a great stillness in the air. On the wooden fences the frost sparkled in the moonlight. I walked for a while and thought I heard music but then there was silence again. I continued to walk and again I thought I heard something but could not make out what it was and again it went silent. Gradually the further I walked the more I could hear the music until I could make it out to be the sound of a fairground organ. I carried on feeling warm inside at the beauty of the surroundings and the surreal rich and happy organ sounds floating over the fields. The music was evidently coming from somewhere in Charminster and continued to get louder as I approached. Then as I turned off the main road and walked up into the village out of the mist, the music stopped and surreal gave way to real An unforgettable experience about forty years ago now |

The members of Pink Floyd have said it's a coincidence. |

Just as he came to the end of the song: Old Shep, he has gone where the good doggies go And no more with Old Shep will I roam But if dogs have a heaven, there's one thing I know Old Shep has a wonderful home. Out on the lawn my big collie raised his head in a long-drawn out howl. We all burst out laughing. My friend never did quite finish the song. |

One morning, at daybreak, I was slow trolling off of Alki Point, just as the sun was beginning to burn through the fog. I was alone on the water and the silence was deafening. Mist and heavy rain were making the steep hills scary. I don't usually drive with the radio on but I switched on just to ease the tension, and the glorious sound of Moving Hearts' 'The Storm' completed the scene like nothing else could have done. |

I have never been able to decide if he deliberatly delayed his entrance to fit in withthe words, but he certainly joined in with the laughter. |

As he came to the line "...they had to bring in extra chairs..." the steward emerged from the storeroom with a pile of chairs. The irony wasn't lost on him, he was ready for the next few choruses...
