Yea sure we all KNOW where it is and couldn't possibly sail past the double junction. Especially not twice in one week. Could I? So was it oversight or vandalism that gave us the non-information. 2) Family Ceilidh. OK PC, H&R, and all that OTT stupidity might lead to not allowing adults without kiddies in too early, but why decide after the programme is published? In the event it was generally commented that knowledgeable adults would have been a godsend with so many novices. AND there are some ceilidhnauts who regard the educative role as essential to keep the interest of those joining the conveyor belt so that they ballance those falling off the other end. Hence the raison detre of the nuCeilidhs visa vis "social" dance. We stopped many keen ceilidhnauts as they headed to Blackmore Gardens who were of our thinking! 3) Why OH Why move a nuCeilidh workshop forward in time? No we don't all read the newsletter, nor every day. Cancellation is a disappointment, but moving to an earlier time is rubbing salt in the wounds. And those that didn't stay long at the workshop - it was deemed far too basic. Those wot needed tuition probably weren't up to speed with the newsletter wheeze either. Yea yea lots to be positive about, and FWIW I will be there in 2012 when the Olympics are on. If for no other reason than the OLYMPICS ARE ON! Wherever the big screen TV is for spouses who didn't really want to be at Sidders (but for the sake of harmony are ), put it where I can't see it. OK? Yes I know running a festival is hard work for little thanks. I thank you by: being there advertising it (unbidden) on several pages on cresby.com singing its praises to those who haven't been and I might even volunteer to steward next year, I know one person who bought a ticket because they were dropped off the database, only to be asked later because of a shortfall. Hmmmmmm. and giving considered feedback. |

Bedford and Newt great as usual, though the Swan was patchy, with some sessions being monopolised by small closed circles round a single table. Not fun for those outside of the ring who might have had something good to add to the mix. Whatever, it was Sidmouth, and the voice usually comes back about Thursday. Organisation of anything on this scale is extremely difficult, and I have much that is good, and nothing bad to say about the quality of their efforts. Highlights for me Bagpuss,Fay Hield Trio,Nic Jones's concert,Pub crawl with the Shanty singer's and dancing with Herbaesus in the evening, The Cleverly Brothers and lots lots more on the fringe. Thank you to the bus drivers who worked so hard. My liver is begining to recover,as are my knee,s did anyone know that between walking down in the morning from my B&B and going from place to place and dancing you can cover over 50 miles in a week? and a lot more pints and pies can be consumed. Love and hugs to all who worked so hard to organise it, Please put me down to come again next year. |

However, I do attend other festivals and I have to say that the above quoted comment is a bit daft. I would think most festival organisers would welcome constructive comments, particularly those by Mr Red. Yes, we all know that festival organisation is an onerous and thankless task, but lets be honest here, the people who do this job thrive on it. |

Yes, but the organisers will now all be soaking their feet and chilling having worked very hard to make the festival a success. I am sure that some. at least, are active mudcatters, and, for us Sidders newbies, it's an efficient messaging system. The Campsite's organisation was very good for us. Once we had secured a key for it, the disabled toilet was a godsend. Even the ordinary toilets were usable, as they had handrails. The one that had pallets up to the steps was ok until the pallets collapsed. It then became unusable.The addition of a ramp to one of the shower blocks was very welcome, but would it be possible to have a purpoae built disabled shower and toilet for next year please? We were warned to expect noise at night, and the music was fine. However, there was a lot of boisterous teenagers using the toilets outside our pitch all night. Would it not be possible, (and, as a health and safety issue)to put a toilet near the chill out/ refreshment area.? We enjoyed the sessions in The Newt, The Middle Bar, and to an extent, the Bedford. Where do all those fiddles come from ? Being able to play on the outside stage at The Hub and Dukes was great too. We'll be back next year! T D L |

The stewarding was a good break from endless events both festival and fringe. You could get into a different head space for a while and be kind of refreshed for the next batch of playing. Thanks Fisheye and Fair Maid for relinquishing one of the coveted Sidmouth badges. I echo GirlFriday re toilet up at top of field near refreshments. The young folk were quite boisterous up until 3 and 4 am with frequent trips down to loos which were positioned (understandably) near the disabled camping. I think more individual keys would not go unappreciated. Several middle of the night bathroom breaks (every night) trudging on slope sodden with dew wet grass to fumble for key 2 vans away was sometimes a bit dodgy. One of the stewards thought I was drunk and kept insisting on helping me about 3 am one night. I tried to tell him I was just trying to get to the key for the disabled loo but arthritis and wet grass were making it difficult. I think there should be chairs outside the Ham for long waits in queues prior to big concerts. All they need is sign indicating they are for comfort of those waiting and priority should be given to elderly and disabled. Noted by 2 stewards that more stewards wandering about the twon in the High Viz vests might be useful, as they were both questioned more than once, what was on and where to find venues, toilets, ATMs, shops, etc. I wouldn't have minded doing a bit of extra duty on top of Manor duties just being a signpost for others as they made their way about. Inform all stewards that lost property ends up at Kennaway House so we can tell festivallers same when they come seeking things they have lost. Maybe a note in the programme and notices in the newsletters? Could be they are already there. I have not read all. Some of above will go on my feedback form. Huzzah to the festy organdizers! You did great. I had a blast. I'll be back. |

From: JennyO This was my first proper time at Sidmouth - the only other time was a weekend in 2001 on tour with a choir from Oz - we only made it to some places that year and never down to the seafront - so I really felt like a Sidmouth virgin. Not any more! It was pretty special for me because I was spending my first days in the UK as a (finally) official resident, having waited 3 months for my visa, and my first time back with my Rob, after having been apart all that time. Rob (quantock) and I met through the Mudcat group on Facebook 3 years ago, and it's taken a long time for us to get to this stage, but we've finally made it! It was great meeting Mudcatters I'd only known online for years, and the singing sessions in the Middle Bar were amazing! Although I didn't actually go in the sea, I got some good footage of it. Links later. Other highlights for me included the concert on Monday night in the Manor Pavilion with James Fagan and Nancy Kerr, fiddle workshops every morning, the Doom Gloom and Despondency session in the Faulkner (next year I won't try quite so hard not to laugh), an amazing tune session in the Radway on Friday afternoon going into evening, the Ceilidh in the Ford, the lovely pasties from The Filling Station, and the procession and fireworks at the end. Only down side was that we couldn't get Middle Bar t shirts, which we really would have liked. If anyone knows when there will be more available, could they let us know? |

Picking out the highlights from such a wonderful bunch of concerts is difficult but Chris Wood's concert in the Ham was exceptional, almost spiritual. His "One In A Million" brought tears to my eyes, first time that's happened to me at a live gig. The Nic Jones tribute was a glorious celebration of his work and the crowd gave him a standing ovation at the start as he walked on stage. Lots of fabulous performances of Nic's music but Jackie Oates' Annachie Gordon was simply stunning and just edged it for me. Another highlight of Sidmouth is finding new music and I really enjoyed Mary Humpreys and Anahata as a new discovery. Laughed and laughed in the daft folk quiz. Roll on next year. |

I wanted to do the delta blues and bodhran for beginners workshops, oh and harmony singing, but alas I was stewarding when they were on. I have Eliza Carthy's autograph on my programme from Wednesday performance Yorkshire Born and Yorkshire Bred in Arts Centre (part of the Manor Pavilion). We were stewarding this event and turned about 30 season pass holders and would be on the door ticket purchasers away. There were some complaints about it not having advanced ticket purchase option. After listening at door and windows I understand why. It was wonderful and I think even better than the Carthy and Rose (Saul) at the Ham, though it was great. Eliza Carthy is as much fun to watch (her whole body gets into the singing and playing) as she is thrilling to hear. |

Stewarding the Bedford was good as I got to see lots of acts I might not have seen otherwise. Elsewhere I loved Bellowhead, Blowzabella, the Spiers and Boden ceilidh (my dancing shoes were a biohazard afterwards though), Fay Hield, Mawkin:Causley, Jim Moray (who was everywhere, and hats off to him for a hilarious quiz!), Remnant Kings, Kerfuffle, Mac and Saul etc, etc singing workshops, and even got to play my clarinet (that has never happened at a folk festival before)and I met lots of lovely people. I will be back next year! |

The t-shirts aren't done every year. There were some last year for the 30th. The one Mike and the Americans did was just for themselves not for selling (and lucky people like me who were given one as a present!) There seemed to be a lot of people back this year who had ben missing for a year or two, which was great. Still miss the Arena but I know that will never come back. I also miss the Dove but people were beginning to congregate at the Swan so at least there is somewhere you can go to chat and to find people. The Asbo tent on the campsite was brilliant. The showers were wonderful: possibly the best campsite showers I've had. Lack of mud was pretty brilliant as well, though no one can be thanked for that. One or two suggestions I have will go on my feedback form. One thing missing, though not something the organizers can do anything about, is the spontaneous happenings that break out from time to time. ust work on that for next year. We used to have a picnic at the Byes..anyone interested? Post festival depression setting in badly now..at least I've got Moira in less than two weeks! Love Lynne |

Was elsewhere - could only get there for the Wednesday, so had to be the real essentials - seeing who I met whilst doing Anchor Gardens & Middle Bar Upstairs, Craft and Music fairs and, alas, going through pubs with indecent haste. Very much essence of Sidmouth. The Anchor Gardens have got even steeper. Danced anyway; particularly to PolkaWorks early evening. Both times I went to the bar, saw someone I knew. 100% correlation of something-or-other. GBH & co contingent well represented, not to mention Ralphie striding purposefully past. And of course Mr Kiddier on keyboard. Middle Bar - bit of lunchtime and evening. Tip: do not dance and then go straight into room full of people singing with windows shut. Thankfully opened soon. Thoroughly enjoyed both sessions. Morticia made herself known which was good. I must dig out the song about the Bantam Cock. Sue the Borderer/from Bideford is saying I ought to lead songs even if I am a bass. Now choruses/directed harmony I can do, but this means learning to hold a tune reliably solo and learn all the verses. Be as well to try, anyway. Thanks, Sue. And noted Richard's well-merited promotion to the Bench. Neil at the back of the Music Fair was as gloomy as ever: Music Room had conspicuous 'reductions'. And the undiscounted price of a new Pokerwork has risen to a quoted £600. Managed not to buy a discounted mandolin, again. First time for several years I haven't seen Rollo Woods - West Gallery amongst other things - either in the Anchor Garden or on the Front. Neither did I see Kevin Gorton on fiddle, melodeon, recorder and Surrey bagpipes in the Bedford or the Swan as usual, but then he is said not to have gone. Nor Phil Atkinson in the same sessions. A real break with ritual. Thought I saw Moira Craig quietly looking at her notebooks in the back of Sue's Pantry. And saw Martin Carthy pushing Norma on wheels, who was directing him vigorously and in detail.... |

The band booked didn't turn up on Friday, but that was the least of my worries what with my elderly mother in Acute Dependency in Frimley Park and one of my house guests taken ill (see Marian Button thread). Enjoyed the storytelling workshops which I attended for the first time. New 'finds' were Thomas McCarthy and Dan from Dartmoor with his menagerie of jig dolls. Cream of Devon and Traveller concerts were excellent. Disappointments: few. Mike Waterson unable to attend - naturally wish him a speedy recovery (see thread elsewhere), so understandable. We had to borrow the Ham box office copy and mark changes in our main programme. The lanyards for holding passes also gone and we arrived on Thursday 29 July well before festival started. If possible, it might be good to have a different coloured lanyard (or armband) for stewards (even if we have to buy them) so there is a visible presence to punters who have questions/concerns. Someone mentioned to me that there should be more stewards in the high viz vests just wandering about town. But in the event you don't have enough stewards, then I for one have no problem stepping up to fill the one off needs when I am off duty. The special lanyard or armband would facilitate that. |

Started raining as we left Pig's Ear and was just misting as we packed up on last day of last Knockholt. I've been on one Cornwall and 3 Scotland holidays and one Lake District where the clouds and rain were coming down as we arrived, suddenly brightened when i got out of car and stayed pretty much dry (apart from light scattered showers) until the day we left when the heavens opened. Even Sidmouth's one morning of rain I was on stewarding duty in the Arts Centre and it cleared as soon as my duty was over. It was raining and cloudy just before the Handfasting in Swansea last Saturday and cleared as soon as I got out of the car. Several times Friday and Saturday night it started raining as soon as I got back into caravan after toilet breaks. What can I say? |

Our first big folk festival, first time at Sidmouth, and first time stewarding. The whole experience was wonderful! Of course the weather helped, but Tam is arranging that for next year too, when we will definitely be back. I find it difficult to pick out highlights, but a special mention for the Shanty-crawl, that was great fun. There were no "lowlights", unless you count wanting to be in half a dozen places at once. Thanks to everyone who organised, participated, attended, or in any way contributed to a great week. Special thanks to those who encouraged us to go! |

From: GUEST Best Sidmouth `Jan and I have had except for 2004. `Loads of great music everywhere you turned. `Prom music just wonderful, and an amazing assortment. ~Love the street performers (great stage patter, among other things.) Some really classic performances in the Middle Bar; above all for me was `'Bollocky Bill`. March to the Sea and singing in the sea a great kick--and well recorded, it appears--lots of videocameras. Thanks so much to Glen Titmus for renting violins for the week--and to Leadfingers for putting me in touch with him. `Having an instrument makes a huge difference in getting into pickup sessions on the prom and elsewhere. I was at one of `Leadfingers' dynamite sessions at the Newt, among lots of others. Even got taken for a `Grappelli-style fiddler. `I can live with that-to say the least. Sorry I wasn't able to see the Wilsons, but at least heard them sing 4 or 5 at the York. I'd really like the words to the `Gloom and `Doom parody of `'Athenry`' `9` (So why grow fields of f'--ing rye?) Thanks to VTam for the great weather. |

Well I charged out the house with no word of Farewell My toast and cup of tea left behind Tho' my ma-in-law and husband thought that I was really unkind I made it to the Rugby Club on time.... OK well nearly, and what a great week I had at John Kirkpatrick's Big Band workshop (Apologies to Tom Paxton for that). Then from Tuesday were the Carols in August workshops with Ian Russell: I went every day, and felt quite bereft on Friday when there wan't one. Managed to get to most of the concerts: very little to disappoint there, other than not really liking a couple of the support bands, but I suppose that's all a matter of taste: by the time I'd heard them and had the first interval that was an hour wasted. My biggest bugbear was making several of the evening concerts a "game of three halves": as it seems to be the norm in folk concerts for people to come and go as they please when they need the loo or the bar, I didn't really see the need for having two intervals: it just prolonged the evening unnecessarily, and so on more than one night I did not stay until the end, whereas I might have done had the concert had only one interval. Having two breaks also runs the risk of losing any good atmosphere built up so far.The exception to that might have been the Show of Hands night when it was extraordinarily hot, and the band might well have needed a cold shower and some rehydration halfway through, especially in the light of Phil's recent health scare. I have included comments to this effect in my feedback form. |

From: GUEST,Fancy I don't buy a season ticket any more, Last time I had one I did not get anything like full value, and anyway I objected to having to pay extra for the concerts in the Ham marquee, so I spent most of my lunch times and evenings in the volunteer, which was great, good singing at lunchtime and great mucicians and singers in the evening(plus they were open until midnight) Great energy from some top class musicians. I went to a couple of concerts in the arts centre (what a sterile Venue that is) and a couple in the Bedford and the Woodlands respectively and enjoyed them all. If I come back next year (I have been coming since the early 80's) it will probably not be for the whole week, what I enjoy most is meeting old friends and chewing the fat with them. Fancy |

Secondly, don't claim to 'advertise' the festival, all you do is bitch, moan and whine like a child! If all I knew of Sidmouth Folk Week was what you have written I would NEVER attend. However, I know enough about the Festival and about you to take everything you say with a large pinch of salt because moaning is all you ever do. Enjoy the personal benefits you receive from the festival and if you have constructive criticisms, make them to the fesival management direct in the manner requested of us all. I'm sorry to anyone offended by this rant but I am fed up with Mr.Red badmouthing a Festival he claims to enjoy. Now I'm off to carry on organising my own festival, which requires massive effort and is significantly smaller!! From: GUEST,guest - watcher It is significant that the initial criticisms in this thread by Mr Red were about the dance side of the festival, but the positive comments that followed were about hte concerts, fringe and sessions. I agree with Mr Red it was dumb to have the Monday ceilidh finish at 9.30 - in previous years it was a family ceilidh on until 11pm. Parents are capable of deciding when our kids should go to bed, and at 9.30 it is too late to go to a concert and we can't take kids into a pub session. Incidently why were all the Blackmore ceilidhs finished at 10.30 instead of 11 as in previous years, and why have "nuceilidhs" (described as challenging) unless it meant experts only - not very inclusive. Last year in Blackmore there were adfternoon dance displays and teatime meet the team sessions, much less this year. Overall the dance side of the festival was poor compared to the last 2-3 years. Has there been a change of organisers, a change of policy to downgrade dance, or what? |
