Health News on Marian Button (singer from Kent)

09 Aug 10 - 07:30 PM (#2961544)
Subject: News on Marian Button
From: Surreysinger

I've had one or two enquiries from various sources about the health of Marian Button, traditional singer from Kent. As some of you are obviously aware, Marian suffered what has now been diagnosed as a stroke on Thursday while at Sidmouth Folk Festival. This is just to let you know that she is still in hospital at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital Wonford at the moment, and was due to have a scan of some sort either today or tomorrow. There is no news as yet about her returning to the Kent neck of the woods (either hospital or home). As soon as anything further in the way of news occurs, I'll post details here (and on Facebook for those who are friends of mine on there). As far as I understand it from my contact with them, the hospital in question does not have bedside phones, and they cannot divulge information to any except next of kin, so it is not worthwhile ringing them at the moment.

I would like to add my best wishes and hope for a quick and full recovery.

Marion is such a lovely person, a great singer and, for one with so much talent, very modest.

I hope it won't be too long before we hear her again at Faversham   F C.

Subject: Marian Button is unwell
From: GUEST,Gadaffi

Marian Button was taken ill at Sidmouth FolkWeek last Thursday with a suspected stroke which has now been confirmed, but not thought too severe. She has some weakness on the left side, mixing up of speech, and is understandably very confused.

Husband Geoff tells me (on Sunday) that she is due for more scans this week at Exeter, and now has her luggage which we at The Volunteer took care of.

I daresay Surreysinger will add any more updates.

George - I had already posted up about this on this thread here last night :-)

No more news as yet, although I understand from Geoff that Marian had a visit in hospital from members of the Claque who,of course, live locally on Monday afternoon.

Well lets try again!!!Poor old Marion ,lovely lovely lady and what a singer. Whenever she comes to stay with us its like having a Walking I Pod in the house, she never stops singing superbly."Oh dont you know this song? Everybody sings it" when she has just knocked you sideways with a superb ballad that you have never heard before.
On a par with Brian Dawson as a National Treasure. We are sorry that you wont be with us for Jacky's Birthday Party this weekend we'll save you a bit of cake. Lets hope that you will be well enough to come in November for the Dungworth visit with Mo and co. Lots of love from Jacky and Nic

Sue - best place to find Marian at Sidmouth on most days is the lunchtime session at the Volunteer (and quite often the evening one as well) - it's where she spends most of her time. And I certainly will pass on all these extra good wishes when I finally get the chance.

Thanks for the messages everyone - I'll print them out and pass them on to Marian at the end of the week. In the meantime, Geoff, Marian's husband, has just told me that the hospital have now said (after another battery of tests) that it wasn't a stroke after all. However, they have identified a problem with her thyroid gland, which was causing the unsteadiness, and are conducting yet more tests. In the meantime Marian will be in the hospital in Exeter until at least the weekend. More info as I have it.

Gosh, I imagine those close to her are glad to know it wasn't a stroke, they can be quite harmful and require lengthy rehab. Hopefully a thyroid problem can be treated fairly simply with drugs and she'll be back to strength shortly. Hopefully I'll get to hear Marion sing sometime too, I've heard lots of praise for her!

Subject: RE: News on Marian Button
From: Surreysinger

I hesitated to post on here again, but in view of the fact that so many people sent their best wishes and concern back in August, I thought it might be as well to let people know that Marian is back in hospital again. She went to Whitby, where we had a good time, but one week after we got back, she was taken into hospital with bacterial pneumonia. Although she came out a week later, it was only fleeting, and she was back in again the same day, and is still there, nearly four weeks later, and undergoing more tests. When I spoke to her a week ago, she was not allowed to sing, which as anyone who knows Marian will realise, is a pretty heavy thing for her. It certainly looks almost 100% unlikely that she will be out of hospital or able to go to Tenterden Festival next weekend.

I'll happily pass on any goodwill messages. If you want details of ward, hospital address etc ... pm me.

I'm sorry to say it, but I hadn't put an up date up myself just yet as the news I had on Sunday evening wasn't quite as chirpy as that, and I didn't want to spread miserable messages until something a bit more definite cropped up . According to Marian's husband Geoff when I spoke to him then , she is still in hospital, and had been rather unwell a couple of times that day. She is awaiting a transfer to a London hospital as soon as a bed becomes available, and they are still trying to find out what's wrong with her. There's no sign at the moment of her coming out, although Marian being Marian is champing at the bit to come out, being somewhat frustrated.

As soon as I have any further news I'll put it up here.

Old Nic - I wasn't able to pm you, as you're not a member, but I too had printed all of this off and was sending it with a card tomorrow since I had said I would pass everybody's good wishes on. Can you let me know if yours has already gone ? I obviously don't want to duplicate anything!

Incidentally, I think I may take a card down to Lewes Festival on Sunday, and see if anybody wants to sign it, and send it off to her. If any of you are going to be there, look out for me at the Pete Coe, tune, and tune and song sessions during the afternoon, and ask me about it!

Sounds like they are going to hang on to her until they have an idea what is wrong, so London's possibly the best place. Though how anyone is able to recover on a diet of hospital food is a mystery.

Just a quick note to say that Marian rang me yesterday from home. She's been there for about a week. However, that is only a temporary thing. At the moment she is waiting for a transfer to the Royal Brompton Hospital in London as soon as a bed becomes available. Apparently the consultant there considers her to be an urgent case. They have discounted heart and lung problems, and at the moment are exploring the possibility that the culprits in the case are the arteries feeding the heart. In the meantime, she is getting very breathless after only a short period of activity, and is still very much unable to sing.
She has asked me to keep people posted when she moves into hospital, which of course I will do.

An update I'm afraid. I've just spoken to Marian's husband Geoff, and have found out that she is back in hospital (Ashford) as she collapsed at home yesterday afternoon and was rushed back in. She's still waiting for a transfer to the Royal Brompton - he thinks it likely that they will now keep her in until the transfer is achieved.

Awful for Geoff as well as for Marian - this must have mucked up the holiday they were planning, too. Very best wishes to both of them,

Not the news we wanted to hear. Marian's been through enough lately so we just hope that she gets seen and gets better in rapid order. All our love and good wishes.

I heartily agree with all of that John. When I hear more I'll post it up. Apparently at the moment Marian is on a Clinical Decision ward (ie next to A&E) which means that she does not now have access to a free phone as she did before. When I hear any more from Geoff I'll post up here, of course.

Len and I are thinking of Marian . He has suffered from the breathlesness for a long time. His too, caused by the arteries leading to the heart. It's very treatable. Especially as Marian has no associated heart condition.
