10 Aug 10 - 06:23 AM (#2961846) Subject: Tech Sharing files - Vista and Win7 From: MikeL2 hi I have just got a new laptop running Windows 7. I have a home wireless network of a desktop running XP and two laptops running Vista plus an all-in one printer. I have been successfully sharing files and documents around the network with no real problems. Now I am trying to add the new Windows 7 laptop to the network but am having problems. Unlike on Vista there does not appear to be a " Network" button that shows me what is on the network. Clicking this button on the Vista machines shows me that it can see the new laptop. But on my new station I am unable to see the networked devices and so I am confused how to either send or receive files from Vista to Windows 7. Anyone able to help ??? Cheers MikeL2 |

10 Aug 10 - 09:03 AM (#2961960) Subject: RE: Tech Sharing files - Vista aand Win7 From: The Fooles Troupe They have cleverly 'helpfully' rearranged/hidden the menu items - try using the help search for it - my laptop is out of reach at the moment, and I'm still struggling trying to find it - mine is a Toshiba and it has a gadget designed to help do stuff like that easier than the 'Win/mess' mashup. |

Click on "See Full Map", but I don't think it will show any device that isn't turned on. Opinions vary, but I like Win-7 much more than XP, and Vista is Microsoft's trial version of Win-7, at best. Consider getting a 'family' version (for 3 computers) of Win-7 and upgrading all of your machines. The new 'network' in Win-7 is called "Homegroups" and (IMHO) is much easier to use than the older network protocols. |

First impressions to me are that it is not as user friendly but that is probably because I am used to Vista and XP. I am not considering installing Win7 on the Vista and Xp machines. Most of the stuff I have on the XP won't run on Win7 and it is a stand alone machine that will allow me to get files on to the Vista set up on the odd occasions I need them. First impressions are that a lot of the programs I have on Vista won't run properly on Win7. eg Photoshop Elements 7 and Elements Premiere 7 etc. For example Win7 version just does recognise any of the video clip formats that I have used on XP and Vista. My new laptop is a Sony VPC-F12S1E/B and cost me over £1000. My first impressions are not favourable and I am considering already to try to return it. I have other Sonys and have found them to be fantastic as have my TV and video and still camera equipment. This must be a Friday afternoon machine. Cheers MikeL2 |

For no discernible reason, the default workgroup name has been changed each time a new OS version appears, so it's different for Win98SE, WinXP, Vista, and apparently for Win7. Generally, the workgroup has to be set up on one machine, and then each of the other machines has to "join" the group. The new machine has to be told the workgroup name used by the machine where the group was created, in order for it to find a group that doesn't use a "new" default name it expects. The failure to recognize video formats may be only because the new machine needs codec files that aren't installed. WinXP and Vista generally were reasonably good at detecting a missing codec and asking if you wanted to find one to download, but I haven't seen Win7 so maybe it doesn't play as well with the rest of the world with respect to that feature. These are just guesses based mostly on prior OS versions, since - as noted - I haven't seen Win7 or any useful information on changes. The only thing reviewers seem interested in is "improved access to Twitter etc" and "beautiful desktops with lots of unintelligible overlapping windows." John |

Frankly after a couple of days sorting my way through it, it really isn't that much different to Vista. Some cosmetic changes that at the moment I can't see that I need and that's about it. As another member said earlier 7 tends to hide things so you have to go looking or hit the search box and that gives you a clue or clues. I have actually managed to pass some data from one of my Vista computers to my Win7 machine. Not completely sure exactly how I did it but I know I can do it and will smooth it all out later. Incidently ( from another thread) my new laptop has a numeric pad and so I am able to use the Altkey method of getting Spanish accents. áÁéÉ ¿¡¡¡ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
