11 Aug 10 - 03:39 PM (#2963086) Subject: New Folk From: Cusco Read an article this week from the Times (I think). The gist was that an old folk rocker no longer felt he had to keep his liking suppressed now that a new band of musicians and groups were coming to the forefront and were considered "cool" Gave them all a go on Spotify and I have to say I was not hugely impressed. The main acts mentioned were:- Alsdair Roberts - not impressed, heard better floorsingers James Yorkston - same as above. Laura Marling - well touted but the sound of her voice seems a litle derivative to me. Decemberists - interesting but didn't grab me. Midlake - much the same as above. Trembling Bells - rather liked these. The article mentioned Faiport influence but I hear The Albions with Cathy Le Surf. The Unthanks - already knew and admired these. Anyone else got any thoughts on those mentioned? |

Of that lot, only Alice The Roberts & unThanks get anywhere my particular idea of what folk is (shh!). midlake sound like the eagles, Trembling Bells are a joke college rock band from 1970, Yorkston is an ok singer songwriter and Marling a not yet ok singer songwriter. I'd like to see the full article but it sounds like a very obtuse bunch to choose. Where art thou' Bilbo & The Baggins, Low!, Jam Morey, Geoffrey-with-Beard, etc etc etc |

Will be seeing many of them at the Greenman next week. But it's all a matter of taste isn't it? Let's hope the floorsingers you've heard get offa the floor and out and about and generally enrich the musical environment. |

What would they expect to find on a hypothetical cd of Folk Music Of The British Isles? Surely it wouldn't be ANY of the musicians listed here and not just because Midlake are North American. Why then are they always called Folk? I can understand roberts and unthank as the clearly cover a lot of traditional ground - but the others!! Having a banjo doesn't make a band a folk band. It makes them a band with a banjo, that's all. |
