BS: NFL 2010 (US football)

The Pats are gettin it done on the front line. Execution to a tee. And the new QB looks likes a young Brady.

The blocking on set play returns is precise from special teams and... well, I am goin to bed. Belichick looks like he's done another great job in staffing and recruiting. Of course, we'll see when the season really begins.

I gave up US football years ago. I blame my defction wholly on television which resulted in the following:

1) Too much money in the game resulted in
2) Too many teams resulting in
3) A dilution of talent and
4) Free agency and
5) Too many divisions resulting in
6) Few natural rivalries.
7) The season is too long by 50% and
8) The game takes too long because of TV timeouts on top of team timeouts and
9) Machines make decisions which ought be made on the field by human beings, even with their fallibilty, and finally
10) Uniforms and cages make individual players unrecognizable...I'm almost convinced the pads cover up robots.
As a consequence I watch no NFL and few (only UClA...talk about suffering) college games.

And don't even get me started on Basketball which is a joke the way it is played these days.

What? Where did my post go? I posted around 5AM on the 20th.

Welker is one of my favs. He makes things happen. No flash, no mouth, just a hard worker. I didn't see the game but read that he caught three on the first drive. And that his knee "looked good". Hope it stays that way.

Vikings and Niners tonight.

Appears it has! The guy is amazing. Catch, deke, block...

Double O's in the locker room for the Hail Mary? What good is that kinda talent if they AND the coaching staff don't know anything about time management? Can you believe that? Millions of dollars for stupidity? If I was the owner, someone would be getting a talk-to! Unreal! Bengals? Cinncinati Housecats (I changed my first choice) is more like it. Gee whiz.

I am still waiting for my Brady Ball, Dan.

BUT... you might not want to send me same as I lucked in on five of six picks yesterday in the Atlantic Loto Proline and if KC loses by 4 points or more tonight, my $2 pays $23.50. Big bucks eh? Soooo. I WILL root for KC, but if they lose, I will be able to bet $5 next week. >;-)

Hmmmm... you can get any player's autog? Let me think on that for... Favre.... on a football... "Great catch! Brett Favre." No "Gary." Just "Great catch! Brett Favre."

Now, how do I set up a PayPal account? Of course, I would take a certified cheque from John Madden.

Now, that was a thing of Brady/Moss beauty. Perfect pass, perfect one handed catch. If guest can't appreciate that, guest has no idea what Yankee football is all about. The best contact sport in the world, bar none.

And, as I have said MANY times... I loves me football, rugby, footy, tennis, squash (the ultimate physical sport), cricket... Yankee football is the best spectator sport.

Nobody is making a move on Moss... I figured the Rams would have made a move by now IF they were gonna. I doubt if the other four will but ya never know. As for Dallas, well I don't think they have enough confidence in their replacement QBs to bother with ANOTHER great receiver. It's possible he will end up ??? I won't say it again.

And, I just read Merriman might be released today.

Whole lotta shakin goin on.

Subject: RE: BS: NFL 2010 (US football)
From: Jack the Sailor

The Cowboys have more than enough talent at receiver. Austin, Whitten (TE), Roy Williams this year, the new kid Dez Bryant. They need Moss and his attitude like they need Rosie O'Donnell as a cheer leader.

If a couple of premier offensive linemen come up for grabs that might be a different story. But then why bother? With six losses they have almost no chance of making the playoffs even if they win all of their remaining games.

Cowboys would be better off shooting for the bottom, trading for picks and picking up a top 5 draft pick from their finish in the standings.

I don't love it when passes are thrown into the dirt when there is no explanation why. Or when a fair catch is called and the caller doesn't even attempt to catch it. When I see such, play after play, I wonder if the betting pools are part of the coaching staff.

Now, I know that sounds like sour grapes, but, PLAY AFTER PLAY? And, calling a run up the middle on first down late in the "score" when a blitz is showing and you have just made incursions into the secondary that exposed a weakness? FFFFF*****ck ME!

Sorry for the rant... just be glad you were not here during the game. I get pretty loud when I see that shit. Even worse than when I see Kevin Martin choke on a brash call in the tenth end.

Dan... it ain't about Pitt... it's about the Pats' defense. Pats' offense can get by anybody any given night but their defense is certainly subject on the line and in shallow secondary... even the secondary and deep support tackling is doubtful at times. Not from a technical individual basis but on a coordinated basis. They just don't have the combination of braun and speed to back up containment in shallow or deep when they give up a reception... or run.

And, there will be receptions and runs, allowed by weakness in the front four, which will happen at some point in the game. Fact is, ya can't go back to the days of Brusci and... I'll stop there.

Now... will the GOT play? He is on injured reserve. And, he is Vinny ten times over. That may actually decide the game. Kick ball, get cheque!

If the MVP is the guy who makes the most difference to his team, then Hines Ward must be the Steelers'. Would have been a completely different game if he'd been there second half. Sanchez & his receivers do well deep and Whilite is questionable so I expect an early and long air game from the Jets. Brady has been working the mid game well but could be forced long if the Jets are the ones who put up points and lead into the mid third quarter; that might be a problem.

Tomlinson will keep the Pats on their toes... Greene ain't no slouch either. The Pats match up pretty well with them on avgerage. Woodhead actually has a yard on them. Gonna be interesting to see how the rushing game is used on both sides.

I think the offensive lines may very well tell the tale.

Hi gnu.

Given up on the CFL? And what about Hockey, Shinty, Hurling, Lacrosse? I've given up on Soccer - it no longer looks like football. I remember the good old days when you could score by shoulder-charging the goalie into the net (and beyond). And I've never got the hang of Field Hockey.

Anyway, back to the game in question. How come the Steelers bench reckoned Big Ben's nose wasn't broken when it was practically pointing over his right shoulder. At least he described it as broken when talking to Andrea Kremer post-game. (Is there a law that says that female side-line reporters cannot be more than half the height of the players they're interviewing?)

Dave... the CFL? Three downs and a cloud os dust. Discussed it before. More physical prwess and less strategy make it more like rugby. I love rugby. I love Yankee football. I don't love a game in between.

Hockey? I had to actually type "hockey"? I am a Canuck! THAT is a given.

And, we don't call it "ice hockey". We do call field hocky field hockey, of course.

Dave... speaking of old style football... when I learned to play squash, it was on a court in a men's residence at uni. A "let" was not in the cards. It was a yellow dot in the kidneys or a shoulder or climbing over the bastard! When I joined a proper league I had a hard time for a while until I was informed of the actual rules for "gentlemen's squash". I spent 3 to 5 hours on the court at a time. Now, I get tired watching.

As far as football and Yankee football, it's like the fact that I like Aussie Rules and rugby far better as well. But, I still keep up with and watch The English Premiership... love it.

Rant: As a Broncos fan I'd like to make these observations....
What kind of sales job did Josh McDaniels do on Pat Bowlen to get him to put the entire future of a solid franchise in his hands and turn it to donkey flop? And then allow him to trade Jay Cutler for Kyle Orton? And then allow him to trade Peyton Hillis for Brady Quinn (even if Quinn was hitting on Mrs McDaniels at a Bronco Cocktail Party)? Not that firing Shanahan was a big misstep. Shanny is a control freak who couldn't call a coherent series of plays if his life depended on it. For Christ's sake Pat, get Gruden, or the Tuna, or Cowher, or even Elway, and get the @%$&! healing started. And while you're at it, go ahead and start Friggin' Tebow, and at least give him some game experience, cause you can stick a fork in this season and, imho, in Kyle Orton as well!

OK, now I feel better. Super Bowl prediction....Patriots versus either the Falcons or the Saints. Falcons are a better team all around than New Orleans, but Drew Brees is the best player in the league, including Mr Brady. The Pats will soundly beat the Falcons if that's the pairing, but will lose to the Saints in the best Super Bowl of all time if, God willing, that's the final matchup.

Yes, I think we've seen the last of Brett Favre on the field. All things must pass, sadly. I hope the transition to regular life won't be too hard for him. Say what you want about him, but the man was an amazing quarterback. We won't see his like again.

Favre was good but... there have been a lot of quarterbacks equally good... In their own way

Staubach, Montana, Manning, Vick, Marino, and Elway to name a few. Cameron Newton might turn out to be better than all of them.

Of course, JtS, but Terry was there. And he has FOUR Superbowl rings. And how many other QBs could throw a javelin 245 feet? And how many other QBs called their OWN plays? And how many other QBs were inducted on their FIRST year of eligibilty to the Hall of Fame?

I could go on.

Dumb ol country boy or smart athelte? He's got my vote as the best QB so far. Oh, Montana was great but I gotta give it to the country boy rube who showed em all how it was done. I could make the same comparision with Joe and Jerry. It don't mean squat. I just like Bradshaw.

Say... who is your fav player of all time... the most exciting to watch? I remember Fred Biletnikoff sitting on his helmet on the sidelines chain smoking... and smoking the secondary. He was a wee lad but he shredded the secondary. He got sent to Montréal because he was too short and slow but he didn't stay there long. The coaching of receivers in Canada was far better than in the NFL at that time and was a big help to him. Gosh... memories come back... remember Russ jackson and Stuart? WHAT A COMBO! "If you can touch it, you can catch it" said Number 11.

Green Bay has impressive numbers, especially in the air game. If their defense steps up they have a good shot at taking the Pats tomorrow. Matter of fact, if I only had yards rushing and receiving per game and individual yards by rushing and receiving to go by, I'd pick GB. Their defense must be doing something right to see the individual yards per catch stats. Could be less confidence in the run game or a lack of patience in the coaching staff, maybe? Again, it'll come down to long game versus mid game and the master of balancing that is The Belly.

I think this game will be all about momentum and peaking which The Belly has seemed to make happen... and seems to have made happen given the last two games.

Would you like some cheese with your apple pie? (Yes, it is a vague reference.)

ext Sunday, I predict either a barn burner or a yawn with The Bills. The Pats seem to sometimes have a hard time with The Bills even when you think it will be a blowout.

GO PATS!

Thanks, Leej ~ very perceptive (unlike so many of the talking-head "experts" on TV, at least until very recently).

Last year the Saints had home-field advantage all the way to the final game, and may not have won without that advantage. This year they'll just have to show that they can win a championship the harder way, on the road.

Brees has been occasionally imperfect, unlike last year, but he's still capable of just about anything once we get to win-or-go-home time. The N.O. defense has produced fewer turnovers, but has improved upon last year's yards-allowed and points-allowed statistics. And the top two running backs, who have been injured for most of the year, seem to be rounding into form. All in all, no worse than last year's championship team, maybe a little better. We shall see...

Yeah... near 4500 air and 32 TDs for Drew. Impressive. 5.3 for Ivory but only 7 TDs on the ground between the top two backs. I dunno.

If the Pats and the Saints played today, I'd bet Pats... $2... >;-). But, who peaks on the last Sunday?... who knows? There's a lot of football between now and then.

Hell... Miami at Pats on Sunday? Like I said, even Buffalo and Miami, even when the are doing shit, seem to be able to rattle the Pats. At least in the past.

I know it's silly to say, but injuries may dictate the rest of the season. I mean, Shockey is a game winner and his nuts are sore.

I wish I could watch ALL the games. Actually, I CAN but it costs coin and I rely on the regular TV networks to televise the good games. Thankfully I live just up the road from the Pats and get to see a lot of their games.

Saints - Pats would be great.

Yes, Brady is a monster. On a day-to-day basis, nobody keeps pace with him. But my guess is that Brees reads the defenses just a little bit better. They are a great team and you already know my relationship with them. However, remember that aside from the Jets there is no one in that division with any substance at all so 4 of the games are gimmies right out of the gate. Steelers can beat them, Ravens can beat them and so can the Colts. It is all going to depend on the game plan and if they can pressure Tommy. Throw out the regular season stats when it comes to the playoff's. Remember the "Perfect season and how it ended" They got a true shot for one for the thumb but it will depend a lot on who they play and how well the other guy is prepared to play them. Statistically, Miami is better on the season defensively. Lately, it ain't doing a lot for them. Especially today. I think the stats may have been influenced over the past several weeks but it isn't reflected in the season stats. And, a lot of the teams with better season stats on defense haven't got a hope to go all the way.

It's what I call "peaking at the right time". As I said before, The Belly seems to be able to get the peaking thing down PAT.

In the end, all I really want is to watch exciting football. That Pats game today was okay for a while, but... you know.

Biggest thing for me was seeing the Pats' replacements step up and play amazing games... that Edelman is fucking amazing... and he sits on the sidelines waiting for a chance to play. When you have weapons like that on the sidelines it gives me hopes that number 4 is on the way.

Only thing I am sad about is the kicker, but he is good for every field goal so far... but... can he replace a kicker that is even better than Vinny? It may be the deciding factor if the Pats get to the show.

Sunday, Jan. 16

NFC: Philadelphia or Seattle or New Orleans at Chicago
AFC: Kansas City or Baltimore or N.Y. Jets at New England

The Patriots have a pretty good gauntlet to traverse Jets, Steelers, Colts, Chiefs, Ravens, they will have to beat two of those teams each coming off victories, and not a 7-9 team in the bunch. They are probably the best in the AFC but if they make it to the Superbowl, they will have earned it.

The NFC is a different story. The Saints seemed to have peaked at the right time the teams with better records look vunerable. The only team without a good chance, I think, is Seattle.

I don't really care except that I was a big fan of the Steelers for a while. Perhaps, better put, I was a fan of the players during "that time". Watching The Steel Curtain, Bradshaw.... that was GREAT football. In 1976, after Bradshaw went down The Curtain shut out 5 of the last nine games (three in a row!) and allowed only two TDs and 5 FGs... unFUCKINGreal.

Minds me, Grogan started the year before and I was was already a died in the wool Pats fan due to our natural ties with the Eastern States. I always loved to watch Grogan play. Too bad the NFL doesn't keep the stats on most broken bones. >;-) Nobody will ever beat his record.

No and no.

Obviously, if there had been payoffs, one of the accusers would not be suing.

These men are not competing for Miss America, they are not "spokesmodels" They throw balls, catch balls, run with balls and beat the living crap out of each other. What they do off the field has no bearing on that.

I think that Ben was an irresponsible drinker with poor judgment, but I don't think he is a rapist. The girls come up to him, bat their eyes and flirt cause he has 2 Superbowl rings and a 103 million dollar contract. He takes a liberty. They see dollar signs and cry "rape."

My wife and her friends are huge fans and never miss a game but at the time the Bills were so good, I was happy to see them do well. I only went to the games to see my kids.

I blame guys like Dan. If he wasn't so good looking he wouldn't have daughters so good looking as to be so admired for their beauty and thus be paid to cheer for the eye of the beholder. Shame on you Dan!

WTF? They are young women. They look great. I like to look at ANY good lookin woman of any age, including Dan's daughters. That is not perverse. That is not exploitation. That is reality. I don't know one woman who doesn't love being told that she is beautiful. As for men that is one of the top qualities we look for in a mate. You can dissagree and pretend its shallow all you want but i'll call you a liar or a unick. As for the woman they spend a lot of time and money on triing to look thier best.

I have seen the buffalo fans get rude to the cheerleaders but I'd bet they do it despite the jerks because it's fun not because someone is forcing them to do degrading things. I even know a girl who made a living making x-rated films and loved it no regrets now years later. She wasn't exploited or forced into it. There is nothing wrong with beauty but the ones who seem to get upset at the thought of it seem to be the ones who lack it and are jealous.

I didn't want to start yet another Mudcat debate here. I don't think looking at cheerleaders is perverse and I don't think they're being exploited. I love to admire women also, sometimes they are the only ones who make life worth living. I guess it's just a matter of personal taste. But more importantly...only three games left! Who the hell do I want to win? Give me a team to cheer (heh) for.

One thing, the security around the girls is first rate and that helped. I never missed a game when my kids were cheering, not in HS, college, or the NFL.   Never missed an Ironman except this last one in Hawaii but my wife was there (I got sick). For the cheerleaders it is a wonderful fun time. I was very proud of them making the team . Most of the fans were fine, some were awful, a couple tried the stalker thing ( I handled that real quick) I am just glad it is over but happy they had such a wonderful experience. My oldest gets invites still from Jim Kelly for his golf outing along with so many of the other Bills greats and Patriots greats also. just glad its over from a dad standpoint

J-boy, Tommy and crew will be back for sure. They are a great team every year. They still got their someday "hall of fame" coach. Still got the best QB in the league. Thing about them, every year they are a contender. They will as always make another run at it next year. Our Buffalo Bills here, ya gotta go back to Jim Kelly and the time my kids were in it to have something to look forward to. At least the New England folks have something to look forward to every year. Been 11 years since the Bills were in the playoff's. I think the difference between teams is the organization itself. I was on an airplane going to Wisconsin for example and the guy next to me was all decked out in Steeler stuff. We got talking, he was a scout for the Steelers. I asked him what college was he going to ... he said no I am going to the High Schools to get some players on our radar .. They start at the HS level! That is why each year they are in the hunt. My bet, the Pats do the exact same thing.

Gary there was no excuse for that performance. I think they just didn't really take the Jets serious as they had blown them out a few weeks earlier ... The team I watch just didn't show up to play but the Jets sure did. Now Pittsburgh better take them serious, their coach seems to know how to motivate his team. I do however think the Steeler defense will rise to match them. I am hoping anyway.

Police didn't find it unfounded they decided it would be too hard to get a conviction seeeing as ben had cops on the payroll as bodygaurds and it would be thier word against some poor student that they got drunk.

It will be a great game though and its a shame you can't go.How does one get tickets to a bowl game anyway?

Subject: RE: BS: NFL 2010 (US football)

Tickets are impossible, You really need to know someone. I never ask, although I was given tickets each time my kid was there but they consider them part of the team. Each player and coach are given 10 tickets. However all their families want to go and their close friends. I always felt if someone gave me the tics I would be taking the seats away from someone's family so I didn't accept. I was offered every time the Pats played as I was on the charity foundation with Brady and a close friend of the offensive co-ordinator.. never accepted, never thought it was right to do so. Only if someone wasn't going to go and had extra then i would accept. Even then it is hard because they sell for thousands. My first thought would be sell them and give the money to the foundation.

Raptor we can read those articles for our selves and they do not back up what you were saying. A twenty year old, in a place where the legal drinking age is ends up in a unisex bathroom in a bar that according to the article you posted was racially somewhat segregated until recently.

It seems that the incident has shone a light on lax law enforcement in that small city, deservedly so.

There in no evidence that the cops were on Ben's "payroll." It was his birthday and he was on a drunken trip from his house on Lake Ocanee 30 miles to the north. He wasn't running an organized crime syndicate in a Chicago.

Well all my pals from Wisconsin are emailing me ... this is going to be a great game I think, maybe one of the best all time. Sure hope it is .. I am thrilled .. I love both teams so I can only win this year. I give the Steelers defense the edge however, their O line is not what it was in the past, that will give guys like Clay Matthews a shot to shut big Ben down. The Steeler defense will put pressure on Rodgers, but you know with Driver and Jennings they will have completions. You can't completely shut that team down. The game I think comes down to defense and if Rodgers is hot, it will swing the Packers way if no turnovers occur. If the Steelers running game and defense click, it will be the 7th trophy for Pittsburgh. Going to be a great game.

Now in regard to Big Ben, as I said he has been wonderful to myself and to so many others. I never pay attention to rag magazines or web articles. I gotta go with the cops. He is no saint, there are few in the NFL or anywhere else for that matter that are saints. But he is no rapist. Likes to party yes, likes girls and beer, yes .. stupid action on his part playing into that setup .. yes ... criminal .. no way my opinion anyway. Maybe he has learned to watch what he does and says and who he is with .. I hope. I read a lot of BS about Tommy also that I knew for a fact wasn't true .. people like reading the bad

Didn't the article say that the incident happened in a unisex restroom? If Ben, the girl and the off duty police bodyguards all were in that restroom, it must have been quite a party!!

By the way, if it was he said/she said, did it cross your mind that the investigators might have found mature policemen more credible than a drunk under-aged girl.

But, watching the pregame stuff... wow... both teams have so many great players. From what I have seen so far, I think the Packers have the edge today, but today is another "any given Sunday".

It may come down to what I like best about this game. I've said it many times. Yankee football is as much a game of chess as it is of physical prowess. And the stories of the head coaches is a soap opera in itself.

I'll be cheering for The Steelers but all I really want is to watch and exciting game. On accounta I have my Pats hoody on and my football slippers too. (After beer #X, I take the slippers off on accounta I don't need another "old football injury".)

Add a couple of bucks for a tip and that's 64 cans of Campbell's soup... 128 meals! If I hadn't had those beers, I would have gone to Sobeys and splurged on some soda crackers (on sale for $2 a box... an exellent deal these days) to go with my vegetable soup that is now on the stove.

After all, it's Super Bowl 45 for me and going crazy with the crackers is just once a year... and I wouldn't eat them all tonight... although, I do have peanut butter and skim milk... oooo... that would be a decadent snack for the game. I even have Kraft cheese slices.

As for the game... it's still Sunday. But, the Packer rush and secondary are shutting Big Ben down. If the Steelers do not establish a viable running game in the third quarter, they are fucked unless they get lucky in the long game. But... whaddya do? I just googled the peas and listened to a song(?) called My Humps for about 20 seconds... WAY too long. Glad I missed the halftime.

The peas made me wonder- whatever happened to the old halftime shows with marching bands, and songs one could sing or listen to?
I can't believe noise helps sell beer or whatever on these telecasts.

Q... kids drink more beer than old folks and kids don't know music until they are old folks.

I watched till half time, then left the timer running and went to bed - if I'd stayed up I'd probably had some more Noah's Mill and missed the second half any way. Got up this mornin, watched a minute or so of the peas, then fast forwarded to the second half, then watched till the end. As they mentioned several times in the studio here, since the Beeb's been covering the game, we've had a string of great Superbowls. Tiki Barber was impressed by how many Brits stayed up. Great to see Lombardi going home, though I wouldn't have minded too much if the Steelers had won. They remind me of a team I used to support:

The Black Shadow

There's been quite a few leagues in Britain, unfortunately sometimes at the same time. The USAF had its own league for a long time, even played their finals at Wembley. The first game I saw was an exhibtion match during the Edinburgh Festival - (Chicksands) Fighting Chicks v the Suffolk Titans on 1 September 1962 at Goldenacre, then the Chicks were back a year later at Inverleith facing the Sabres from France. I supported the Ravens because they were the first British team I saw that played as if they knew what they were doing Victor Ebubedike (later Mohammed) ended up on the NY Jets squad.

I agree with Q, I couldn't take it nor the halftime show. Sorry no fan of the peas, just don't care for the music.

Wait, there was music?

I already miss it. Other sports have their charms but nothing, and I mean nothing, equals the NFL.

Marching bands are for college. The Super Bowl is all about the hype and the biggest possible stadium music acts performing. I thought that Peas were OK. Though Fergie was the only one who sounded like her voice was not pitch corrected. I try to keep in mind that current popular music is not aimed at my taste.

I'm still waiting to see the Grey Cup halftime show - they had Bachmann & Turner.

The highlight of the Peas' set was Slash emerging from the stage to play Sweet Child of Mine with Fergie on vocal. I still thought her vocal fell short of Axl Rose by a long shot.

What is it about the Mudcat that makes it apparently acceptable to come onto a thread with no other intention than to ridicule those posting on it?

The fucking US Civil war has been over for some time. Does that mean it should not be talked about?

IF YOU DON'T LIKE A THREAD, Here is a suggestion, DON'T OPEN IT!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps you would like to explain why you would open a thread A WHOLE WEEK after the big game, if you think that those posting on it are somehow stuck in some sort of non-life getting on with groove?

Even worse, why you would make such a stupid comment then follow up to see if it was answered?   :-)

Did you realize that Super Bowl Troll has a ring to it? Are you angling for that nick name?

You're right, Jack,my comment was about as stupid as someone comparing the super bowl to the Civil War...a lot in common, there.

The late, great radio host known as Super Fan ended every show with, "In the game of life, sports is the toy department." Except maybe in yours life. I was having a bit of fun with you guys...you're having a heart attack, Jack.

Yeah John, You are the only person who sees the humour in this. We all aspire to your impersonal detachment.

For instance we admire the way you got all of your discussion of this year's half time show before it began while the rest of us had to wait until after it was over.
